How it all began
Football.
The thing that basically keeps me stable.
I play two sports for West Golden Bridge high.
Football and Baseball.
Winter was my off season.
"That practice was brutal" Tyler whines, rolling his shoulders.
"Suck it up wimp" Kyle laughs, throwing his shirt on "Hey, Any of you seen that new girl around?"
"Yeah, I haven't heard her talk once and she's been here for three days" Erin explains.
"I didn't know we had a new girl" I explain.
"You've probably seen her, Blonde hair, Green eyes, Usually wears light pink, blue or white" Tyler explains.
I think for a few seconds "Oh, Her? She's in my Math and Science class, she usually does her own thing"
Kyle shrugs "She's Mr. Henrys niece, moved here a week ago"
"Nobody ever moves here, it's usually people moving out" Erin laughs.
"Makes sense, she's a total freak" Tyler states, the team filling the room with laughter.
I however, don't join in "How? You don't even know her"
"Do we have to? She doesn't talk and has no friends, even the weirdos have friends, she's a whole new level" Daren snickers.
"Yeah but maybe she's just going through some stuff" I state.
"Why are you defending her?" Ryder asks.
"Hey! James is right, take it easy on her, you don't know her" Kyle says, slamming his locker shut.
The room goes silent.
One by one we all leave.
Kyle and I being the last ones.
"See ya J" He says, heading over to the door.
"See ya" I say, closing my locker.
I grab my stuff and walk into the hallway.
My phone vibrates and I take it out of my pocket.
I look down and see my mom is calling.
I answer it and hold it up to my ear "Hello?"
"Hey, Can you pick Ryan up from daycare? They want me to stay late tonight" My mom explains.
I sigh "Yeah"
"Thank you, I left some money-"
I zone out the rest of her sentence taking a short cut through the music hallway.
"Okay Okay, Talk to you later" I Say, hanging up.
"So keep on climbing, though the ground might shake Just keep on reaching though the limb might break We've come this far, don't you be scared now' Cause you can learn to fly on the way down" I hear someone sing.
I furrow my eyebrow in confusion, knowing the football team is usually the last to leave.
I've took a short cut through the music hallway since I started football and no one is ever here.
Backing up towards the choir room the singing gets louder.
I look into the room and see a blonde girl sitting on a chair, playing the guitar.
Her voice is what I heard.
Not knowing I was standing there she continues the song.
I slowly make my way over to the risers and lean against one of the bars.
When she sings the final note she sits there staring at the ground for a moment.
"That was really good" I say, making her jump and a slight scream escape her lips.
She stands up, turning around.
"Sorry" I state "I-I just overheard you and um, You have an amazing voice"
The girl presses her lips together, forming a straight line "It's fine, and thanks"
We sit in awkward silence before I speak up "I'm James"
I hold out my hand for her to shake it "I know" She sighs, I raise my eyebrow "I mean, I only know because I sit at the table next to the cheerleaders and they are always talking about you while looking over at you and um" I chuckle a little at her rambling "I'm Melody"
She takes my hand and shakes it.
"You're the new girl" I clarify, Pulling away from the handshake.
"Sadly" She sighs, sitting down.
"Why is it sad, Who wouldn't want to live in slow Golden Bridge" I chuckle, Going around the risers and sitting in the row infront of her.
She smiles sightly "Well my uncles a teacher which automatically makes me a freak, Even though no one knows me"
I nod, remembering the conversation I just had with my team "You don't talk"
"I do to, what am I doing right now" She scoffs.
"I mean during school" I state.
She hides behind her hair a little "So?"
"You're shy?" I ask.
"I guess you could say that" She says, setting the guitar down and leaning back.
"You don't act shy" I say.
"Your point is?" She asks "You don't know me"
"Are you going to kill me?" I ask.
"No"
"Okay, good enough for me" I state, making her giggle.
I smile and my phone starts vibrating.
I look down at it and realize it's Ryans daycare.
"Crap, I gotta go, Bye Melody" I say, rushing out of the room.
I run out to my car and speed out of the parking lot.
Melody.
Huh.
