Ch. 14 | Vortex: Origins

After school, Jake and Melissa headed back to her place to think up if a plan to stop Vortex once and for all. Well, Jake was doing all of the planning. Melissa was doing some finishing touches on the lightning gauntlets for the presentation.

"Hopefully whatever you have planned, it all ends up being worth it." Melissa said with a sigh. "We can't afford to lose prom night."

"That's why I'm thinking hard." Jake said. "Don't worry, there will be a prom. I'll make sure of it."

"Don't forget, we also have our presentation on Friday." Melissa said. "We have to rehearse for that as well, right? So, it's good enough to get the highest grade?"

"Oh yeah. . . that's right." Jake said. "Then I must think harder! And faster!"

Melissa sighed as she went back to working on the gauntlets.

"So, we know that Vortex has a very powerful ability. Or as you call it, quirk." Jake said. "He's able to make portals with the flick of a hand."

"And they're able to go anywhere." Melissa said. "We don't know where it goes. Just like a wormhole."

"Except it's not." Jake said. "We know his quirk as 'wormhole'. But. . . really, it's just a simple portal."

"That would make sense." Melissa said. "Real wormholes, in theory, are very dangerous. There would no other side."

"Exactly." Jake said.

"So, now that we know this. . . how is it gonna help us defeat Vortex?" Melissa asked.

"It won't." Jake said. "But it gives a better understanding of his power."

"Hmm. . . hang on, I think I might have something." Melissa said. "I have to go and find it."

Melissa then got up and walked around her room, looking for something specific.

"What are you looking for?" Jake asked.

"I'm pretty sure that there was a news article about Vortex." Melissa said. "It made waves around all of the US."

"He's that popular?" Jake asked. "Well. . . in terms of being a villain."

"He's been mentioned by name before." Melissa said. "But no one has ever seen him before. The rumor for the longest time was that his parents kept him locked away due to his dangerous quirk."

"Wow. . ." Jake said.

"But now that has already proven to be false." Melissa said.

"Hmm. . . maybe." Jake said. "I have an idea."

"Huh?" Melissa said in confusion.

. . . . .

After a bit of traveling, Jake and Melissa arrived at a small apartment building.

"Are you sure this is a good idea?" Melissa asked. "I mean. . . what if they're not friendly?"

"Trust me." Jake said. "I've got this all figured out. Just watch."

Jake then knocked on the door of the apartment. After a few seconds, the door opened to reveal a little old lady.

"Uh. . . hello miss." Jake said. "I'm doing an investigation. I would like to speak with you."

"Oh, um. . . please, come in." The old lady said, gesturing them inside.

Jake and Melissa then went inside the house, which was filled with a lot of family photos all over the walls and fake plants everywhere.

"Woah, this place is nice." Melissa said.

"Thank you, dear." The old lady said. "It's been hard living alone, so it's always nice to keep the place tidy just in case of passerbys."

"Well, has anyone ever visited?" Jake asked.

"Not in a long time." The old lady said. "Not since. . ."

The old lady then formed a sad expression on her face and looked at the family pictures.

"Oh. . . sorry." Jake said. "But I'm gonna have to break up this moment and ask you a few questions now."

"Go ahead." The old lady said.

Jake then took a deep breath as he prepared to ask her what he needed. "What do you know about. . . Vortex?" He asked.

The old lady gasped softly before looking Jake in the eyes. "I. . . I haven't thought about him in a long time." She said. "Not since he left the house and nearly destroyed the world."

"He nearly destroyed the world?!" Melissa said in shock.

"I'll start from the beginning." The old lady said. "Long ago, I had two children. One child ended up quirkless. And one child was born with an immense power. Quirk: Wormhole."

"Woah. . ." Jake said.

"The child grew up sheltered away from society, since his quirk was too dangerous for the world. Even the doctor said it could cause the end of the world if he wasn't supervised. And so. . . I did my best to supervise him. L get him make a few neighborhood friends, and everything was great. Until he grew up to be adult age. He didn't want to be sheltered anymore, she went off in his own, without my knowledge. And his quirk. . . It was too much for anyone to handle. People were scared of him. And it eventually got to him. He went down the dark path of villainy. However, He could only create small wormholes in order to steal precious stuff from museums and art galleries, as well as just destroying buildings. By this time, my other son had just become a father. But he didn't want his son to grow up knowing he had an evil uncle. So, he moved away from his home state. But a few years later, my son called and told me that his son had developed a quirk of his own, similar to that of his uncle's. I was worried, since I was afraid that he'd grow up sheltered, too. But he reassured me by telling me that his son would get a normal life and he would help him learn to control itas he grew up."

"What about Vortex?" Jake asked. "What was he doing during this time?"

"Well, during one of Vortex's attacks, the number one hero, Star and Stripe, came to our rescue. And she defeated Vortex and threw him in prison."

"Hey, I've heard of her!" Melissa said, excitedly. "She's so cool!"

The old lady sighed. "However. . . he wasn't done just yet. Vortex was a man who showed no restraint. When the cops came for him and took him in, he wasn't able to use his power. He was locked up tight in Japan's best prison, Tartarus. However. . . this man was sick in the head. Even more so than he already was. When he knew he would never cause chaos again. . . he broke out of prison with ease. But he then flew up, high into the air, and activated a large wormhole above his own head. And then. . . the unthinkable happened. He flew straight into his own wormhole, before it collapsed with him inside. He was never seen again." She finished the story.

"Wow. . . so, he basically committed suicide." Melissa said. "There's no way anyone would survive being trapped in a wormhole."

"Wait. . . but if Vortex trapped himself in a wormhole, then how is he causing trouble around the island?" Jake asked.

"He's what?" The old lady asked.

"He has attacked I-Island multiple times already." Jake said.

"No. . . there's no way." The old lady said. "He's gone."

"Don't worry, miss." Melissa said. "Jake is gonna out an end to him for good! Trust me. But mostly him."

"I won't let your son cause anymore trouble." Jake said. "I'll put an end to his reign of terror."

"No. . . he shouldn't be here!" The old lady said.

"Miss?" Melissa asked, starting to sound worried.

"Both of you need to leave." The old lady said. "Now."

Jake and Melissa didn't need to be told twice as they both left through the front door.

"Well, that was a bust." Melissa said.

"No. . . we have everything we need." Jake said. "Vortex has somehow survived the effects of his own wormhole. And now he's back. And I bet it's for one thing only. . . revenge."

"But now that we know what he's capable of, how do we stop him?" Melissa asked.

"I don't know." Jake said. "But I *will* put an end to him. For I-Island. For the world!"

"Are you sure you're up for it?" Melissa asked.

"I'm gonna go home and think this through." Jake said. "You can go ahead and finish the project. I'm gonna make a plan to stop Vortex."

Melissa sighed as she knew there was nothing she could do to change his mind. So she didn't even try.

"If you say so." Melissa said with a sigh.
