Tonight, when the stars glow brighter and the wind blows the trees, the dancing stage will be open for the soul mates.

The night was so beautiful today that I could be gazing at the stars to finish my day. These distant gas balls are the night's charm, painting the sky in an alluring purple. Funny, it's perfect for the situation I've found myself in.
Here I saw a man—or even better—a beast, the name humans have gave him. His blonde hair, always messy, contrasted against his shining emerald eyes. He was the summer in flesh, and had a bright smile in his face the moment he saw me.
He was dressed so elegantly, a prince. Ha, just like me, dressed like a princess.
However, I'm not a princess.
The beast came closer to me and took my hand, kissing it with his cold lips. His sharp canines brushed my fragile skin. I felt chills running down my spine. How many seconds does take to these teeth rip my flesh? Even with this thought, I'm not afraid of him.
Feeling his arm around my waist, I stare at the floor. Hope I don't ruin everything with this dance. When I've managed courage to face him again, his smile seemed to have loosen up a little, he appeared to be sad.
"You don't have to be worry with me." I mutter as he closes his eyes, pondering.
"I'm not worried" He says softly, and starts moving his feet. "You told me everything is going to be alright, and I believe you."
I'd like to say more, but this would cost my energy; energy that I need to keep dancing. So I sealed my lips shut and let him lead the dance.
I let the beast—
No
I let my friend lead the dance.

I was in the kitchen, baking cookies for my siblings. Who usually does this it's my mother, but she's busy assisting my father in the business within the village. My parents were just little merchants, selling kitchen utensils like pans, spoons, etc. It wasn't the best job out there, but makes enough cash to keep us from starving. There was my father, my mother, me and my two siblings. We had Gowther, my older brother, however he moved away to begin his medic career two years ago.
My youngest siblings, Diane and Hawk, were two little creatures. Diane was 8 and Hawk was twelve, and they can't stop fighting. I've found it quite cute, although there was sometimes that they just get on my nerves.
Today was one of these times.
I immediately stopped kneading the cookie dough when I heard Diane's screams. I ran to the backyard, my mind clinging to the worst, when actually she was crying on the floor safe and sound with Hawk by her side shielding his ears.
"Thank God, you came." He sighs, relieved. Hawk points to Diane, who was sitting down on the floor crying her eyes out facing the forest entrance in our backyard. Oh, she was screaming too, of course. "I took that stupid doll she keep talking and threw it in the forest, and she started weeping."
It may sound a little odd the way he spoke so bluntly. Not fearing me, his older sister whom could just tell mother or father about his misbehavior, but he knew that I wouldn't tell a living soul about it. I and Hawk have a close bound, way stronger than my other bounds within the family. Let's say that he's my 'partner-in-crime'. He helped me with my pranks when I had his age. He was a good and well-behaved boy until his six years old. Wonder what happened.
He noticed me glaring daggers at him, then sighs and starts playing with his pink locks. "She was too obsessed with that toy, she thought it was unique."
"It was!" Diane yells, her high-pitched voice almost making my ears bleed. "Daddy told me it was the last one in the store, so it means that she's special!"
"Last in store means it was a popular doll that every single girl in the village has and Dad was lucky on finding it on sale."
To save me from a discussion in the dinner, I walked closer to Diane and hugged her tightly. I glanced softly at her watery purple orbs, shooing her worries away. "Don't worry Dia, you doll is special, so special that I will search for her in the forest."
This surely got her spirit; as opposed to Hawk, who gave me a skeptical glare. "You sure? It's pretty cloudy, rain can pour any time, and if you got to deep, it can kill you, remember?"
He's right. Our family didn't have any choice but live here, closer to that. It was dangerous, but we've learnt how to live with the creatures and dangers living inside it.
Well, all but one.
But, there's no way the beast would attack me in the sunlight, right?

Slowly, we move from side to side. Softly, these were our steps. With the moonlight blessing our lonely bodies in this dance that set our fates.
We should be afraid. After all, my objective was...
My objective was...Release him.
Free him from this curse. From this ritual that nobody knows. From these useless and selfish sacrifices the villagers forced him to take.
The villagers don't know anything about him.
I can feel his tight grip in my hand. I can see his eyes on mine with a lovely gaze. I can hear his light sighs and smell his forest perfume.
I can also taste the accumulated saliva in the sides of my mouth.
I spin.

Well, in which kind of situation you feel despair?
When the toast falls with the jelly side down? When you and your friend are using the same outfit in a royal soirée? When your favorite character in your favorite book dies? Or when you are in the middle of a dark forest with only an old lamp as your weapon?
Dammit, just how far Hawk threw that doll? He's twelve for Pete's sake; it can't have gone that far! But here am I, in the middle of the forest, unsure about how much time I've wasted here. The trees were tall and their foliage were so scattered that covered the sky, making it impossible to verify if it was day, afternoon or night.
Everything I know is that it's dark; I was alone in the forest with a blood-lusting beast.
Can't get any worst, right?
My conscience told me to find a way out, I was going too farther and the beast could sniff my scent. On the other hand, she probably won't stop crying if I didn't bring back her doll.
But she will cry if I went missing...
I climb in a tree, trying having a better view on this place. For your knowledge, isn't worked. The foliage covered everything, and the trees grew up randomly. Cautiously, I step down in the branches, not wanting to alert any animal.
Too late; when my foot made contact with the grass some unknown force knock me down and pin me against the floor. I shut my eyelids, waiting for claws making slits on my throat and releasing my soul to death.
It never came.
Quickly, I peeked on my aggressor with my left eye and the first thing I saw was fangs. Yes, sharp teeth, ready to kill. However, the most surprising thing it was that they belonged to a human mouth; in a human face.
It was a boy with short body, his face showing characteristics of a young man and, to be honest, very charming. His eyes have a stunning shade of emerald, and they were watching me fiercely, but also curiously. On his head lied sunrays in hair locks' form. He was flustered and panting, like he has run a marathon.
"...Smells so good..."
I overheard, before he let go of me. He keeps staring at me for a while, as well as me. His clothes were a really plain set: just a button-up shirt and maroon trousers. They were very large for him, and were torn too. His hands—or paws—were big, fluffy and had sharp claws, his feet too, and there was two little horns at top of his head.
He appeared to have Hawk's age...I felt pity. However, my brain registered his unnatural characteristics and the fact he attacked me minutes ago. This apparently defenseless and innocent boy is the Beast; or at least its cub.
"Hey boy" I put my hands in my knees and bend over to reach his height, although his wasn't so short. He blinks, tilting his head to the side. Was he trying to trick me, faking his innocence? "This forest is dangerous, where is your mom?"
"I could say the same for you" He spat nonchalantly. "Don't treat me like a kid; I'm older than you for several years."
What in the world he just said?
Yeah, ladies and gentlemen, this 'boy' is the beast. He seems to be annoyed by something, wonder what. If he was hungry, he could've just devoured me in that moment. Perhaps...
"Are you hungry?" Ask without thinking. He looked surprised, and arches an eyebrow. "Are you offering yourself?"
I frown in disgust "No way" Flustered by the uneasy question I tight my grip on the lamp. The fire is going to die soon, and I don't want to be in the dark with him. "Show me the way home, I can get you food there."
"Dunno where is, and I doubt you've something that could satisfy me." He answers with a monotonous tone, putting his arms behind his head. I clench my jaw. He's quite bothersome.
"A small cottage on the top of the little hill, next to Liones Village." I said and his eyes went wide, shocked by something. Before I could ask what's wrong, I heard his voice. "You're from Liones Village?" I nodded nervously. He stopped for a moment, the gears in his brain finally working properly.
"Fine" The sudden sound of his voice made me flinch. Ignoring, he continued his speech. "Follow me; we'll arrive at your house faster this way." I nodded one more time before the walk.
The atmosphere between us was so tense you could cut it with a knife, but he dissipated it when he asked my name. I answered and then started the trivia about our lives. His name was Meliodas, lived in this forest for thousands of years, loves to hunt wolves and ale, despite he doesn't drink it in years. In return, I told him about my family, my parents' job, and how much we miss my older brother.
It was nice, and he looked somewhat happy for having someone to speak with after so much time. He even offered himself to look out for the doll later. Meliodas wasn't dangerous as people thought, although his introduction was pretty lame.
I didn't expect time passed this fast, and here I was, facing my cottage on the hill. Diane was arguing with mother and father, and Hawk was waiting for his punishment. There was disgust written down over all his face.
"Nice family...now quick, join then." Before I could say thank you or repay him with food, he returned for the forest. My family noticed me and rushed to me, worried.
I don't know why, but when he said 'nice family', he wasn't talking about my family.

Our steps became faster as we approach the climax. Honestly, I've never danced this way before, so intensely. It wasn't a bad felling though, not with him as my partner.
Left, Right, Left, Right.
Simple transforms in confusion within his hands. Three minutes ago, I was sure when this dance finishes, he would be free. However now, I've never felt so insecure. What is that? Why I felt so flustered around him? He's my friend, right? Even with our lives at risk, he wouldn't hurt me, right?
Right?
Meliodas noticed my silent nervous' state and pulls me closer, our foreheads touch. "Stop thinking so much, enjoy this dance, may be the last thing you do." He whispers again. Shivers, his words made me shiver. I felt his burning gaze on me. "Remember, if anything happens, you can defend yourself of me."
Please, don't make me remember that.
1, 2...1, 2, 3
"Well, Ms. Hawk, would you like some tea?"
I said mockingly to the pink-haired boy. Due to the mess with the doll that happened yesterday, Hawk was punished by our parents. They told him that he had to replace Diane's doll, but he refused to cooperate and tell where he hides his money, so he replaced it with his body.
Think that it's enough for her? No, no. She picked one of mother's old dresses and forced him to wear it. The dress was pink, like his hair and had ribbons and ruffles sewn over it. And I, finding it a rather comic scene, brushed his hair into a cute ponytail. Such wonderful hairstyle made Diane invite me for her tea party.
Man, his expression is priceless.
"Oh sure!" He said with a high-pitched voice. Then he grabbed a little porcelain tea-cup and threatened me with it. Oh, I'm so terrified. "I want a tea made out of your blood and tears!"
"Enough!" Diane cry, lifting up and grasping Hawk by his hair. "A lady would never say 'tea made with blood and tears', she would say something more intellectual like 'a refreshing beverage composed of your nasty body liquids.'"
I hold a laugh. It's a large name for a tea request. Hawk sent me a murderous glower before being dragged by Diane to inside, where Diane would teach him about how to be a 'true lady'. I'm sure that I'm going to hear screams.
"Well, the play's over" I told myself as collect the tea set on the floor. When I was little, I didn't like to play this way. 'Acting like a lady'. For me, it was better a nice game of tag or hide-and-seek with the boys from the village. I guess this was why the elder women in the village disliked me. I'm different from rest of the other girls.
And I think this is why I'm so lonely.
"You don't like playing with your sister?" Hearing a familiar voice I turn, searching. He wasn't here—Just trees and more trees—am I hallucinating?
"Up here."
I turn my head up and here he was, sitting peacefully in one of the branches, watching me. He seemed to be amused, wearing such a bright smile in his face. I'd love to climb in there and talk to him, but that thing really far from the ground. "You're something rare, you know?"
I blinked, and he already stepped down. Wow, I'm impressed. He patted his clothes before approaching me. Odd, he was a totally different person yesterday. Meliodas noticed my 'what the?' face and sighed.
"I was starving, and this made act like a jerk." He said scratching his cheek. "But don't worry; I had a nice breakfast today!"
His claws were soaked with water, but probably his breakfast let them soaked with something really disturbing. This made me ask "If you were that hungry, then why didn't you devoured me that day?"
"You have something with being eaten?" He asked staring at me curiously. Before I could deny the weird accusation, I've heard his voice again. "I was one, so I've considered eating them a taboo."
Human?
"You were human?" Escaped accidentally, but instead of retreating, he just mumbled.
"It's a tale as old as time" He closed his eyes and rubbed his arm. "A prince was cursed by a sorceress owing to his cruelty, selfishness and the fact he didn't cared for his people. He was transformed into the hideous beast he was inside, and the spell could only be broken by someone who loved him by who he truly is"
He told me like he had listened countless times. Meliodas paused and cleaned his throat "But that wasn't enough for her, she cursed all of his family for raising him like that. The whole castle went insane and everyone succumbed to their wild instincts. It was a massacre, and the only survivors were a little group of servants and, obviously—" He pointed to himself.
"The prince."
Petrified, that's what I was. Standing motionlessly, processing his words. Sounds unbelievable, however, it explains why there's an abandoned castle near to the forest, and why there wasn't any royal family around the village.
"There's another reason." He says suddenly, stopping my thoughts. The ex-prince pinched the bridge of his nose, as if he was trying to retreat bad memories. "You smell like her, so I got this bad feeling in my stomach about you."
Her? Who is 'her'? A wife?
"But I might be wrong, made years since the last time I saw her." He smiled, trying to avoid suspicion. He extended his hand.
"Let's start over; I'm Meliodas."
I took his hand.
"(Y/N) (L/N)"

How much time we've been dancing?
My feet are aching because of our fast steps, and I can feel Meliodas' tiredness due to the sweat in his face and the small puffs of air coming from his mouth. Weird, he has more stamina than me. Although we're closely from fainting, thanks to our exhaustion, we couldn't stop.
"Hold on" I breath, trying to comfort him. "We're almost there."
He didn't say anything, and I begin to be worried. When felt his claws poking my dress' fabric, I understood his silence. He was restraining himself, trying to control his instincts before it kills us all.
"Haha" He pain-laughed "Remember when we tried this for the first time?"
The wind blow up the trees.
Stay still, we're almost there.
1, 2...1, 2, 3
"Are you sure of this?" He asked unsure about what we're doing.
"Don't worry, it's just for one night, nobody is going to notice." I said, biting my lower lip as I try to hide my insecurity. Would love to say that I'm sure about it, but that'd be a lie. "Let's have some fun."
"You know what will happen if they found out, right?" Meliodas sighed, loosening his tie. "I don't wanna be executed."
"Stop saying silly things." I mumble as I drag him to the village.
Every year, the village arranges this festival as a tribute for its prosperity and security. Colorful lights and ribbons decorated the houses; there was games and attractions everywhere, children playing like crazy in streets and, obviously tons of food.
My family always participate the festival (it was a commercial opportunity), but I've never thought it was amusing. Things are harsh when you're lonely, and the only people who bright me up are Diane, Hawk and Gowther. But the last one is really far away.
I thought bringing Meliodas was a good idea, since it's been years since the last time he came out of that dense forest. According to him, the curse weakens year after year, but will be with him until he dies (or when he finds someone who loves him). He also said that his 'hands' become more human-like in the night, so he could be more vulnerable at night. On the other hand, he still has horns in his head.
To solve his ripped clothes' problem, I borrowed some of Hawk's old clothes: A white button-up shirt; cerulean blue trousers and vest; a yellow necktie and chestnut shoes. Oh, and a newsboy cap on his head to hide the horns. He looked like a little and innocent human boy.
At first I thought it was a good idea...but now I'm afraid that we might get caught. If someone starts keeping an eye close, we're screwed—really screwed—so it's better if he took care of this hat.
"This festival is different from a royal ball." He muttered. I've forgot he was a prince, not used to this kind of celebration.
Well, honestly speaking, by the time he passed inside that forest he wasn't used to any kind of human celebration.
"Father gave me some money to have fun, so let's go while we still have time." I pull him to a target shooting stall. He holds his cap so it doesn't fall while we ran.
"You've to pay for fun?" He widened his eyes, incredulous. Again, he was a prince.
"This isn't like royalty, Meliodas." I answered, giving a coin to the elder stallholder. I grab the gun and aimed my target. "We do much more than dancing"
He frowns. "Hey, are you sure you know how to hold a—" Before he could finish, I shoot; right in the bull's-eye .The mister was perplexed (so was Meliodas) and gave me the great doll hanging in the wall.
"(Y/N) (L/N) scares me." He mumbles. I'd love to say that every girl in this village knows how to hold a gun, but when a group of girls passed us gossiping about me with a gun, I changed my mind.
He noticed my gloomy mood, and puts his hand on my shoulder. "Don't worry about it; at least you'll survive in one of my rampages with this." He smiled brightly.
I muttered a thank you, and guided him to another attraction. We approached a 'Guess-Who' stall, where four men dressed identically were standing. They had painted their faces making more difficult to find out. I saw Hawk trying to guess who the right guy is and probably win something for Diane.
"I'm sure it's this..." He'll embarrass himself, so to save him from that I shoved the doll in his face, gaining his attention.
"Here, you don't have to worry about cute pink dresses anymore." I mock; his play with Diane is still fresh in my memories. I heard him growl before harshly taking the doll from my hands.
Hawk realizes I'm not alone. His brown eyes meet Meliodas' green ones and it left him stunned. His eyes went wide in bewilderment, his skin became pale and he tightened his grip around the doll.
He knows...?
"(Y/N)" He called, his voice dropping several octaves, startling me. His expression changed from shock to seriousness. He knows? How? Nobody ever saw the beast's face—and if they did, they became bloody pieces after. Meliodas didn't showed any nervous' signs, but I'm sure he's worried about it.
...
......
...........
Hawk sighed. "We'll meet in twenty minutes, thanks for the toy." He grumbled massaging his temples and leaving; probably going to meet mother and father with Diane. I glanced at Meliodas and he shrugged. "I don't know him."
I've decided to ignore it and proceed my way. After many attractions, we stopped for some snacks at the cake stall. Meliodas said he wanted some ale, but I'm pretty sure that he wouldn't get it with his stature.
"Ladies and Gentlemen!" The village leader shouted. He was an old and happy-go-lucky man, and his voice could slice seas. "Please grab a partner and pull them here, it's time for The Autumn Dance!"
"The Autumn Dance!" I exclaimed, dropping my cake on the ground. I grab Meliodas' hand and take him to the boys' and girls' circle. "Finally I have someone as partner!"
We started moving at the sound of a little band' music; Meliodas' height made me assume the dance's lead and it was, honestly speaking, very embarrassing. We looked like two clumsy children. I must've stepped on his foot three times in a row. He clicked his tongue.
"Let me try." He whispered, and took the lead. With a low 'follow me', and copied his steps. Hey, now I'm dancing! He remembered dancing steps after all these years? Fascinating!
"As expected from a prince." I said jokingly, and he chuckles. Left, Right, Left, Right. I follow his steps without hesitating. I've never felt so...happy. It's because of him?
A cold breeze embraces us as we dance joyfully. Meliodas seemed to be having fun when suddenly I felt a harsh grip on my dress' fabric. His claws were ripping it and approaching my corset. He had a pain expression in his face and was biting his lips to ease it.
"What's wrong—"
I didn't saw it.
It was too fast, sharp claws cutting my face's skin, leaving four bloodied thin lines on my left cheek. I fell on the floor, bewildered. The band stopped, the dance stopped, everything stopped. They stopped to behold this horror scene.
When he attacked me, his cap fell, revealing his horns. His hands became the fluffy paws with sharp claws again, and he was staring at me with a bloodlust glint in his eyes.
Everyone around me was stupefied in silence, waiting for something to happen with fear written down on their faces.
Meliodas rushed to the forest and when I stood up to chase him...
Everything went black.
1, 2...1, 2, 3
"It's your fault! Everything!"
"I know, I know."
This dance took a violent shape, his steps were too fast to follow and I couldn't breathe. I watched his mouth moving, his fangs growing owing to his bloodlust. He threw insults here and there and listened, while we keep going.
Oh boy, it's still a dance?
"If you didn't showed up...everything is your fault!"
I know.
I felt tears running.
I know.
1, 2...1, 2, 3
I was curled up into a ball with a chain around my foot, with my legs against my chest and my face buried in my knees. On that sad position, I eavesdropped on the villagers' discussion within the side room.
"You saw it right? It was the beast!"
"I can't believe such young lady brought him there..."
"Was (Y/N)! Everyone knows she's crazy!"
They asked me this a lot since I was a child. Why can't you be like other girls? I never knew how to answer. Why can't I like a doll's play? Why I'm not like Diane? Who loves dolls and cute dresses? Why I'm not like other girls?
I don't know.
I always have this fighting instinct. This instinct never allowed me to stay quiet. Since I was born, I couldn't explain it.
But this instinct allowed me to befriend Meliodas, allowed me to fall for him, so I love this instinct of mine.
"So, what we're going to do?" An old man asks. "That monster can come back anytime!"
"Oh, my poor children!" An old woman exclaims.
"Worry not!" The village leader shouts. "I got a solution for this problem."
"What it could be?" A young boy asks.
"Easy!" The leader laughs. "She brought him here, so it's fair enough dragging her into the forest to it!"
...
....Hahahaha.
Why I'm not surprised? They thought of me as a sacrifice. Well, it's my fault for bringing him there. If I didn't, we would probably be chatting tomorrow, about the little things that make us laugh.
I heard the door open and close. I thought it was their leader, with a sick smile in his face, ready to hear screams.
To my relief, it was only Hawk. He didn't look pleased, with his knit eyebrows and frowned lips. He was holding a saw, ready to cut the chains on my foot.
"You're pathetic." He spat harshly, coming closer to me and kneeling, and started sawing the iron. "Of all the stupid things you did..."
"He isn't bad." I murmured. He changed due to the curse, and his family massacre. That's enough; he suffered alone for so much time!
"I wasn't talking about bringing the beast." Hawk said. I was confused, so what's wrong? Meeting him? Befriend him? Fall for him?
When he was finished, I rubbed my skin. It's going to leave a scar. "I'm talking about falling in love with someone you cursed."
...
What?
Hawk put his hand on my head and whispered.
Ouvrir
Memories flowed in my brain. Filling and overflowing. A splitting headache took control of me and then I remembered. I saw a woman facing a prince in a royal hall, muttering words in foreign language that now I know. I saw him and his family transforming into horrid beasts, as she witnessed every minute of this morbid show with a cold expression in her face.
That woman...
Was me.
"You deeply regretted cursing Meliodas after you heard his history; he wasn't evil, his parents were, and you misunderstood him." Hawk told me, sitting by my side. "You carried on the pain for years and years, until you couldn't take it any longer, and you cursed yourself"
He stared at me for a long time, checking if I was paying attention. When he was done, he proceeded. "You cursed yourself, a curse that made you reborn as a powerless human in the family of the castle servants. It took a long time for you reborn, so you ended up in their descendants. Obviously, I couldn't let you alone, so you cursed me too."
I frowned, hugging my legs. "However I knew I would find Meliodas again, so I let you with temporary memory loss and a key-word, so you could bring me back when the time arrives." My voice disappeared. "I'm sorry for bringing you into this."
"My memories resurged when I was six." He lifted up. "And don't worry about it; I asked for this, you even gave me a human body when in my other life I was just a little pig."
"Glad you've liked it" I smile. Now I know why I felt so close to Hawk, we were friends before the curse. My most loyal partner...
"Meliodas" I whispered. I rise up quickly and face the wall. "I need to find him."
"Hang on there" I felt a hand grab my wrist. "(Y/N), there's high chances in everything went wrong, you know very well that 'love' was just the first step."
He was right; I was so blind in rage for Meliodas that I put specific terms on the curse, terms that not even Meliodas himself knows.
The Dance Ritual.
This made him attack me in the festival, we did it wrong.
It's a complicated ritual: The cursed had to dance with his soul mate within the forest in a dark and cold night. The stars needed to be really shining and the duo should be dressed in specific clothes. The cursed should be dressed representing the day and his lover should be dressed representing the night, this would represent their union, the day and night: the afternoon. I called it 'The Afternoon Dance'
"Curiously, today is a cold night with strong wind, the stars are ridiculously bright, and he was dressing blue and yellow, while I'm dressing purple and silver." I said, glancing at the little window.
"(Y/N), don't—" He's interrupted when I blow up a hole in the wall. The using magic's sensation left my fingers burning. It passed so much time. The abrupt loud sound made the villagers came in the room, but with a finger's snap I put them to sleep.
With my magic, I summon a change of male clothes. It was for Meliodas, obviously. "Deliver this to Meliodas, there's a message inside, just follow Gowther's clothes smell and you'll find him."
Even if he disagrees, he nods and get ready to run. "More?"
"Tell him everything's going to be alright."
1, 2...1, 2, 3
Everything ends.
The steps, the night, the rage, the pain, everything comes to an end.
He was strangely quiet to someone who was spilling insults five minutes ago. When I bend over to see if something's wrong, his hand pulls my head to him, crashing our lips.
It was a short and chaste kiss, to finish this dance.
I witness the sun rises, illuminating his figure. I saw a smile without fangs in a head without horns in a body without claws.
"Our love is ironic, isn't it sorceress?"

Consider it a Christmas gift.
I've watching some Danganronpa V3 gameplays on the internet...and...
Kokichi is precious. Saihara too. But mostly Kokichi.
Merry Christmas again!
