Chapter 20 - Heart dictates

One thing Megan could do, was ask Sirius what he thought could help against a fifty foot dragon. So she did the very next morning.

Dear Sirius

I have more news about the Tournament. It's not unusual, but it's not good. The first task is dragons. Real ones, I've seen them. And I have no idea how to get around them. Help? Be careful.

Megan.

Megan got up early and anxious that Sunday morning.

First, talk to Hermione, she decided.

She found her leaving the Great Hall.

"Oh, morning, Megan..."

Megan took her wrist and led her outside.

"I need to tell you something..."

She began telling her about her conversation with Sirius, and the previous night's events. She As alarmed as she was, Hermione tried to keep calm.

"One battle at a time... We'll try and keep you alive till the first task..." she said. "Then we'll deal with Karkaroff."

The task was planned for the following Wednesday.

"I sent a letter to Sirius... Hermione, what should I do?"

They walked around the lake trying to think of a way how to subdue a dragon. They went to the library to pull out every book they could find on them, but most of them were more about tending to a dragon than stopping it from barbecuing you. And none of the spells Megan could think of would be much help because of the strong hide....

"Oh, no... He's back again!" Hermione groaned.

"Who?"

"Krum..." Hermione said, nodding to a table on the far right. "Why does he have to come here, he can read on his stupid ship! Come on, it'll be full of hysterical giggles in a minute..."

Sure enough, a moment later, a swarm of girls headed to Krum.

As they were crossing the courtyard, Megan spotted Cedric.

"I'll catch you up," she said.

"Where are you going?" Hermione asked.

Megan glanced around and whispered:

"Cedric doesn't know. And I l-care too much about him to let him go unprepared."

Hermione nodded. Megan took a deep breath and headed towards Cedric who was talking to another sixth year. She knew she would appear rude, but she didn't care.

"I need to talk to you," she said, pulling him away by the wrist.

"Megan, what are you..."

She found a dark empty corner, pushed Cedric gently against the wall, and looked around to see if anyone was listening. No one was.

"What's going on?"

"Dragons." She said, looking at Cedric.

He blinked, confused.

"What?"

"That's the first task. They've got four nesting dragons, one for each of us."

His clever brown eyes widened.

"Are you sure...?" He asked.

"Positive. I've seen them." She said. "Madame Maxime and Karkaroff have seen them too, so I'm pretty sure Fleur and Krum know by now too."

"How did you find out?"

"... Hagrid showed them to me and Madam Maxime. And I couldn't not tell you. We're friends... I know you would do the same for me."

"Okay, then... well... Be extra careful, dragons are tricky."

"Yeah, I know. But you just focus on your task. Hermione and I are working on mine. But don't tell anyone Hagrid told me or you, he'd be in so much trouble..."

"No, of course not... and thanks."

She nodded and stepped back so he could leave.

"I mean it, Megan... be careful. And not just of the dragons."

"I know." She said. 'I'll be okay."

And he walked off. Megan watched him walk off heavy hearted and made to return to Gryffindor Tower when Moody called her.

"Potter!"

She looked around.

"Come with me."

Confused, and a little nervous, she followed.

She had only been in the Defence Against the Dark Arts office a few times before. When Lockhart had been there, it had been covered in pictures of him. With Lupin, it had been more likely to contain a new Dark creature for the next class. As for Moody, he had filled it with curious objects, which Megan assumed he had kept from his days as an Auror. On the desk was what Megan knew to be a Sneakoscope, though bigger than her own. And on the wall was a large mirror with pale faces floating around them.

"Have a seat."

He pointed to a chair. Megan sat slowly down.

"So. You know about the dragons."

Megan wasn't sure what to say. She had been afraid of this. But she certainly wasn't going to tell on Hagrid, even under the Cruciatus Curse... But he did master the Imperius Curse too...

"That was a very noble thing you did."

Megan stared, this not being what she had expected.

"... Well... he's one of my closest friends... I know he'd have done the same."

She cut off, unsure what to say.

"It's all right, Potter" he said. "Cheating is a part of the Triwizard Tournament, always has been."

"I didn't cheat," she retorted, offended. "I just... happened to find out."

"I wasn't accusing you," he said with a grin. "I told Dumbledore from the start, he can be as honest and high minded as he likes, them Karkaroff and Maxime won't be. They'll be scratching for any piece of information they can for their champions. They want to beat Dumbledore."

There was a silence.

"So. Figured out how you're going to get past it? Your dragon?"

Megan shook her head.

"Well, I won't tell you. No favouritism. But your friend Diggory, by your age he could turn a whistle into a watch and have it sing you the time. Miss Delacour is just as fragile as me. As for young Mr Krum, his cogs may not be very well oiled, but Karkaroff's are. They'll have strategies. You need one too. I can give you some general advice. First: play by your strengths."

"I... I don't have any..."

"Course you have," he said impatiently. "Think, now. What are you best at?"

Megan thought about that for a moment. She was reasonably good in class...

"I guess I'm a pretty good flier..."

"More than pretty good, I've heard," he said.

"But how does that help?"

"You just need a spell to get what you need."

Megan thought a few seconds. To fly, she needed a broom. But she doubted they'd let her take her broom out on the field... so she needed...

"A Summoning Charm?"

She had found Hermione and told her about Moody's suggestion.

"Yes. I know we've been studying them, but I don't think I master it enough."

So, every bit of free time they had, they practised. They found an empty classroom and Megan tried to make things zoom across the room into her hand. But it always seemed to loose heart half way there.

"You're doing fine, Megan, if you'd just concentrate..."

"I'm trying!" Megan said hotly. "But I don't know why, a dragon keeps popping into my head!"

It was Tuesday morning during break. The task was the next day.

"Well, you're doing fine otherwise. The diction is clear, you have the wand movement down. It's just a question of focus. Come on, then, we better get going. I have Arithmancy and you Divination."

Megan nodded and they set out. It was a long day. She had to suffer another terrible fate prediction from Trelawney for Divination, then wolfed down some corn beef hash and pumpkin juice before heading back to the common room with Hermione. Harry would have gladly helped but he was worse than Megan. They used the cloak to not be caught by the teachers, and practised late into the night. It was only at about two in the morning that she truly managed to complete the spell, even though the dragon was still vivid in her mind.

"You've done it, Megan!" Hermione said, looking exhausted but happy.

Megan let herself fall into a chair, panting.

"Yeah... let's just hope I can manage it later..."

"As long as you're really concentrating hard, it'll work." Hermione said confidently. "Come on, let's go get some sleep... you'll need it."
