The Prototypes
Rock didn't get to see his half-brothers off on their first day to work as he Roll cleaned up the lab. To his surprise, Doctor Wily had come in to retrieve his batch of coffee and disappeared without a word. He didn't hear the doctor ever enter or leave the lab.
"Are you okay?" Roll asked.
"Yeah. I guess I'm not used to Doctor Wily being so calm around me. Especially after I was Megaman, you know?" Rock sighed. Roll set the cleaner down and joined her brother's side.
"I've been feeling off about that too. Just weeks ago, he wouldn't stop shouting about he was the best above dad and glaring at you, and now he seems a regular scientist always taking dad's coffee. He even thanked me for bringing him food yesterday." She said.
"Are you starting to forgive him?" Rock asked.
"Of course not. He still hurt you and hasn't apologized for it. Doctor Light might be forgiving towards him, but not me. I'm not sure I will ever forgive him." Roll sighed.
"You are a stubborn sister Roll. And I am thankful for that." Rock smiled. Roll smiled back as she punched his shoulder, and he returned the gesture. The two started exchanging playful punches and teases before they returned to organizing the tools into little piles. Coffee mugs were removed from the main computer's desktop Rock gained access to Doctor Light's files. Emails from agents Krantz and Stern spread across the screen alongside requests from job sites and taxes. Pictures and messages from the other Light siblings made him smile as he browsed.
There was a silly picture of Iceman, fully functional again with a colony of seals and polar bear cubs. He had a sign written 'Miss all of you' up front of the photo. Elecman and Bombman had sent personal emails about the recovery and repair of the power plants, and Cutman had sent a picture of him photobombing Gutsman's group shot with other workers. The last latest photo was Fireman sent a photo of the incinerators almost clean of all garbage, with a caption above him saying 'Almost done down here. How're the kids doing?'
Rock continued to scroll through the photos, the moments of his family replaying in his head and smiling the more he saw. He passed by the photo of him during his first time activated by Dr. Light, as well as the photo of Roll's activation and the two of them hugging afterwards. As he scrolled the last of the photos, he saw a locked photo with a peculiar date. The title photo said 'The Prototypes' and a blurred Dr. Light stood with three robots.
He unlocked the photo and was shocked. Doctor Light in the photo was younger with dark brown swept back. Standing in front of young Doctor Light was Timeman and Oilman, dressed in civilian clothes. In-between the two robots was a third robot, his face and features similar to Rock's, but having a slightly older built body. A pair of sunglasses covered his eyes and the hair a light chestnut brown.
"Timeman? Oilman?" He murmured.
Suddenly, he heard his sister talking to Doctor Light and footsteps approached the door. He pressed several keys hastily before the photo tab disappeared. Dr. Light smiled at him while he put down extra supplies and blueprints with measurements.
"Hello Rock. What're you doing there?" He asked.
"Oh, I'm just looking through old photos of our family. Fireman just sent a new email about the progress at the incinerators. And you've got another email from Judge Peterson and Agent Krantz." Rock replied. He kept replaying the photo of the prototypes, even as Dr. Light continued to talk.
"D-Dr. Light, could I have a walk around the city? I want some fresh air." He asked.
"Of course you can." Dr. Light smiled.
With permission, Rock walked along the path and through the streets of the city. People chatted amongst themselves, and some recognized and greeted him randomly. Cars honked as he passed the intersections and buildings. Rock reached the intersection where Oilman had dragged him into during the blackout and squeezed through the alley. He repeated the same turns and crossed similar landmarks. The alley widened into its own road and the fence of the Chronos Institute came into view. The fence no longer had signs or locks attached, and the building shone in lights and working machinery. Rock went through the fence and entered the doors. The hallways were teeming with workers and smaller robots, with a very similar purple robot sorting papers.
"Timeman! Are you busy?" Rock ran to him.
"Actually, you caught me just in time for my break." Time hummed.
"Great! Listen, I need to ask you something. I was going through stuff in Doctor Light's lab and we have tons of photos of our family. And then I found a photo of you and Oilman with Dr. Light, but younger. Dad never told me he met you guys before, and-" Suddenly, Rock felt his arm yanked as Time opened his workroom and tossed him inside. Oil, who had been eating on the chair, yelped in surprise as Time locked the door. Rock felt still as Time turned to him.
"What do you know about us?" Time asked in a quiet whisper.
"What?"
"I thought the Doctor Light deleted that photo a long time ago, before you and your sister were created. But since you came in here blabbing about seeing us with Doctor Light in the picture, then you know about Project Prototype." Time directed Rock to a chair.
"Hold the phone, you saw our old photo?! Holy scrap, it's been years since I've thought of that day! Did you like it? Tell me you liked it." Oil leapt excitedly.
"What was Project Prototype? And who was the boy in the sunglasses? He looked a lot like me." Rock questioned. He noticed the smirks on both of their faces and scooted closer.
"Project Prototype was Doctor Light's first experimentation on developing robots with individual thought. It was his first attempt at robot masters. Before you and your siblings came along, he helped make the first three prototypes. One for industrial work and general public help, and Oilman filled that role. I was the model for specialized functions. And the final one was Blues." He said.
"Blues?" Rock asked.
"He was the original of the prototypes, the very first 'robot master' ever made, and..." Time started.
"He was our best friend. And by all accounts Megaman, he would've been your older brother." Oilman finished.
"My older brother? Wow. I thought Roll and I were dad's first. He never told us about Blues before. What was he like?"
Oilman suddenly broke into laughter. "He wasn't really talkative when we knew him. In fact, he was more about speaking through his actions, which was often rebellious. My dude would often scoot away from the doctors for hours at a time, and no one noticed until he came back. Do you remember Time?"
"Oh yes, Blues once stole a bunch of ice cream cones because a brat took all of the cones for himself. Or that time he stopped a bunch of men in an alley, and he barely had to do anything. The men beat themselves up trying to hurt him. He certainly never wasted his energy on people unless one of them got a good punch on him." Time smirked.
"He fought people?" Rock asked with concern.
"Well, this was before the laws were added to robot masters, so we were exceptions to them for a while. Blues certainly had no problem with that, and we all got along just fine. It was a lot of fun navigating the city and everyone being shocked we were robots." Oilman said.
"He certainly sounds ambitious." Rock said.
"We were a little disagreeable when we were newly built. Even I was a hard piece of work before my programming mellowed out. Blues did have a good heart. That story of beating up the guys in the alleyway? That was because they were harming a bunch of kids. And he did end up using the cones for the other kids in line. He was a good guy." Oil assured.
"Where is Blues right now?" Rock asked. The smiles on both the robots' faces dropped.
"We don't know. There was a bad accident that hurt Time and Blues a long time ago, and we haven't heard of old Blues since then. He's...probably been scrapped by now." Oil murmured.
"What?! But why? Why didn't they just fix him?" Rock gasped. Time shuffled around, picking up whatever items his friend had thrown against the wall.
"That's almost saying why did the judge pass the order to scrap the wily robots. If a robot can't serve a practical purpose or is seen as a threat to the public or those in power, they are sent for decommission." Time huffed.
"But they can't do that, can they? Dad said we are meant to bring peace to people and machines." Rock argued. Every time Time turned, he would slightly move his eyes down.
"Our first purpose though is to help humans. To serve our purposes. If we don't have one, we are seen as every sniper joe or lesser machine out there. Even you and your sister have roles, and that is to be Doctor Light's children." Time glared.
"He wouldn't do that to us. He loves us." Rock grew annoyed of the time manipulating robot's words towards his father and creator.
"He loved Blues, and look what happened!" Time spat. Rock and Oil were stunned into silence and they could only stare at the floor. The purple robot faced towards the paperwork spread throughout the walls and desks.
"Regardless whether Doctor Light loves you or not, it is up to the mayor and those in power to decide what happens to us. That's all it is, we're numbers to them. You're wasting time trying to develop connections with them, because once you have no purpose, you'll be just like Blues." He finished. A knock on the door alerted everyone and Kouin entered.
"Timeman, we need some help with the latest project."
"Yeah, I'll be there. My break's over anyway." Time sighed before leaving. The door closed once more, leaving an awkward Rock and Oilman alone.
"When Blues disappeared, it really messed my bro up. All he ever talks about now is keeping his schedules busy. I miss my old buddy." Oil murmured.
"I'm really sorry. I shouldn't have pressed him on. I should go apologize." Rock readied himself.
"I wouldn't recommend it. If you try to say anything now, you'll probably get a notebook to the face. But don't put yourself down so much. That's the most I've seen him talk in a while, and you did bring back some nice memories for us. He'll get better, I promise. Say, why don't ya head back to the doc and talk to him about Blues? And if you manage to figure out what happened to him, I would appreciate it if you shared." Oil said. The two nodded to one another as Rock left the institute with an aching feeling in his core.
The talk did not go how he expected or wanted. In an attempt to know the brother he never knew he had, he made two robots upset over the reveal. He was upset over Time suggesting that Doctor Light loved them as creations, and not as his children. However, the purple robot did help recall the meeting he had with agents Krantz and Stern before he went to Brazil. The gruff agent had mentioned a group of people called the 'Spears', and how they hurt people over having the idea of robot masters living amongst them. The thought of humans hurting humans because of him made him sick. The familiar kind of sick that reminded him of the mad scientist that lives with his family under the same roof.
When he reentered the house to share the news, he saw Roll chatting happily with Doctor Light, laughing and having a conversation. They noticed him and Doctor Light greeted him warmly. All the questions he had were forced in the back of his mind.
"Hey Rock, you were gone for a while. How was the walk?" He asked.
Rock smiled back. "It was a good walk."
