GAMMA
Rock felt a bullet pass him as a human soldier caught sight of him teleporting in. Despite the immediate danger, he felt the laws forbidding him from defending himself. There was no other choice than to raise his hands and stare at the small group armed with multiple weapons.
"Wait! I am here to help you!" Rock exclaimed. This same situation felt similar to meeting the Wily robots back at the dump.
"State your designation number and purpose!" One of the soldiers shouted from their group of comrades.
"DLN.001! I go by Megaman! I have been sent by a federal agent to deal with an attack from Doctor Wily!" Rock said urgently. The soldiers relaxed slightly upon hearing his hero name but still approached with caution.
"You are Megaman? The robot that has stopped Doctor Wily twice?" The lead soldier asked.
Rock had considered telling them about the fight with Ra Moon, and that would have made it three times. However it was highly possible they would not take him seriously. He probably would not believe himself unless he saw it. As a result, he held his tongue and simply nodded to confirm the question.
"I'm here to stop Doctor Wily! Where is he?" He made sure to repeat the question twice for everyone around. The buildings around them were in shambles and several top floors of skyscrapers reduced to stripped foundation. Rubble and concrete were shoved in large mounds, a small group of families tending to one another behind it. Glass and bricks crunched underneath the soldiers' feet, and far enough from Rock were couples and children clinging to each other. Some soldiers hid far in the back with various injuries, but were able to stand.
The leader of the squad, after nodding off the rest of his comrades, turned to the robot boy pointing forward. "Doctor Wily is heading fives miles north towards the United Nations building. We tried to strike a counterattack, but barely anything pierced the giant robot he is in. What could you have that could pierce that?"
"I have an idea, but I need to get close." Rock said.
"Get going then! The rest of us will evacuate the remaining civilians and call for backup!"
With nothing else to say to the soldiers Rock called for Rush's jet mode and flew through the destruction. The stripped buildings and flattened streets cut across city blocks in a wide path, with a large dot in the distance. Even with the distance, Rock saw the dot larger and wider than the usual skyscraper. The object stretched in a square shape with a rounded out top and two smaller towers pressed so tightly, no sunlight would be able to peek out. The path he followed was briefly covered in several feet of concrete and foundations until it opened up to the path of a large river.
As the distance between him and the large object grew closer, Rock started to notice odd details. The smaller towers at its sides were moving as if they were trees moving in a breeze. The rounded top gleamed a bright scarlet, and the structure's foundation swayed back and forth. Then the river's currents swirled aggressively as they foundation split in half. Rocks jaw had dropped. The foundation was not a building but two giant legs guiding a titanic robot body. The skyscraper trekking through the large river was a giant robot.
"Gamma?" Rock murmured in shock while Rush whined worriedly at their closing distance. He had heard only small snippets about Doctor Light's magnum opus, including the size of the robot itself. He knew that his creator mentioned that Gamma would have been the largest robot created in history. However, he imagined that the size would have closer to three times the size of his brother Gutsman. Or even twice as large as Ra Moon back in the Amazon rainforest. Now that he was close enough to see its details, he was barely as large as one digit of one of its fingers.
The East river covered up to Gamma's ankles as the giant robot stood at a tall rectangular building in shiny windows. The eyes of the metallic beast gazed down at the hundreds of people crowded on the roof, most of the humans looking on with terrified eyes. Certain members of the council were speechless at the monstrosity threatening their lives. However, in the midst of the silent terror was a tall lady with untied hair whipping in the wind. Her focused gaze showed nothing but contempt towards the man controlling Gamma, a small viewing glass window cutting through the skull. On the other side of this window was a grinning Doctor Wily, his hands hovering over the main controls.
Rock was over the top of the giant robot's head in fleeting moments and took note of dozens of helicopters surrounding both of them. None of them had attempted to get closer in fear of being knocked out. However, it seemed as if Wily had not noticed his presence either. A small idea came to him as he pulled Rush further up. It was best to not be seen so soon.
"Well then Albert Wily, you have the full attention of both the government council and the worldwide public. What do you want?" The lady spoke through a handheld communicator, allowing the conversation to be shared with the mad roboticist.
"Haha! How kind of someone like you to speak with me in person Jazmyne Terrill." Wily sneered.
"Just cut to the demands." Jazmyne murmured.
"Fine then," the mad roboticist huffed, "Gamma here is capable of surviving all of the most dangerous catastrophes both natural and manmade in the world! No storm, earthquake, or even volcanic lava can damage its armor! And thanks to your gracious ISEE institute, it is powered by a energy so great, none of your counterattacks will do anything to stop Gamma from running! I can pilot him to run over every building in this city, or even crush the surrounding cities across your rivers! Any ammo you use on me will do nothing! All of your military robots will fry before they get close to me!"
"He is right. We tried sending waves of drones and they blew up several blocks away. Whatever that machine is powered by, nothing electronic can get near him." One of the officials whispered in her ear mid conversation. The woman kept her mouth shut and hand still on the controller.
"Even if you do manage to pierce Gamma's armor, I have an army of robot masters at my side ready to create destruction at my command! Since your military had so much trouble handling six of them before," Wily taunted, "I can only imagine how you would fare with eleven of them! And they are not above endangering innocent lives if it means I succeed!"
From where Rock was currently flying he saw the faintest twitch in of unease on Jazmyne's face. Her shoulders tensed and released slowly as if attempting to keep herself calm. Her face slowly rose up from the communicator, before her gaze rested above Gamma's head. And appeared to stare at him.
He froze watching her face, the slight raise of her eyebrows indicating she saw him. Her breath went still before her widened eyes returned to neutral. She closed her mouth and the communicator was closer to her more than ever. Wily, assuming she was staring directly at him in acknowledgment, cackled and continued with his rant. The other hostages did not appear to notice him either. He stopped himself from rushing down to get them out of there, despite knowing the obvious danger to living beings. Wily could easily crush them or push them off the building with no effort, leading them all to a painful and horrible end.
All that image was missing was a burned body in lava...
NO! Do not think about that now! Rock clutched his head. The people were in need of help, and he needed to find the right time to fly in.
"And you can forget about calling for help from Doctor Light's precious Megaman! My army is currently taking care of his body as we speak! You have nothing to fight back against me! Any effort results in this!" Wily gestured to the trail of destruction behind the giant robot, "You have only one choice if we want to end this peacefully!"
"And that would be?" Jazmyne asked.
Wily's grin had turned unnervingly wide. "All these years, I have done everything I could to be recognized for my genius! Every day I had tried my hardest for my creations to be recognized! I reached to every institution with propositions to change the world into a better one! But even after I did everything by the book, and showed the greatest creations made by my hands, all of you rejected them! Instead, you all would favor Thomas Lights idiotic idea of creating robot masters! MY creations would have been for the good of everyone! Thomas has this foolish idea that by giving robots the ability to think that they will be anything but TOOLS! But the committee had long favored his idea over mine!"
"But now look at what favoring Doctor Light has brought you! Robots with thought did nothing to stop me from easily taking them away from your control! And it was easy enough to fool the precious "father of robotics" into letting me be near his ultimate creation! However, if you give control of all of your military and technological assets to me, then I will stop destroying the city. I will even let you continue to live your precious robot servants at your side, but on the condition that any construction of robots is to be given to me. It is all I ask for."
Aside from Jazmyne, several agents and officials stared in astonishment at the mad scientist's request. Some started to twitch nervously at the increased tension, and Rock was readying to fly in.
"No." A single word said by Jazmyne made both Rock and Doctor Wily do a double take. She stood firm even as the robot's giant frame leaned slightly, blocking the sun's rays.
"I beg your pardon?" Wily's voice spoke in a manner switching between barely contained rage and genuine confusion.
"When the first automaton was constructed, there was a sudden demand to create machines that would handle more difficult work that rendered lives in danger. Many people wished to partake in the creation of a new age. Before we knew it, there were all types of inventors wishing to be acknowledged for their "genius". Some did change us for the better. Some for the worst." Jazmyne briefly looked away.
"Of course there were those with unconventional methods of obtaining the same fame. Stealing projects, illegally sought out the latest tools, and other ways. The demand outgrew the profit. There was a need for a system to keep track of all those inventors and investors. We created the World Robot Union for that same purpose. And out of that, we sought the safest options out of our list to keep them in line. And those that could not qualify...well we could only offer so much. You can only do so much for hurt pride. Or brats whose claim to fame was shafted."
"I do not understand Miss Jazmyne..." Doctor Wily started, his voice gaining a dangerous edge. It seemed as if the woman did not notice or care.
"You try to make it sound as if we intentionally ignored you, but we do not seek to hurt people. You truly had fascinating ideas alongside him in your college years. But Thomas's project showed more safety precautions in the long run."
"We had tried to offer you help to your ideas..."
"You tried to keep me down-!" Wily attempted to interrupt only for the communicator to cut off. He grumbled in rage as she started talking once more.
"But you insisted we were, in your own words, 'blind fools pacifying your potential'. And then you were caught buying and modifying illegally obtained materials in the black market. You endangered students and a relative of a visiting council member in your presentation. You disappeared after your license was revoked. And then you showed up years later, stole another man's creations and put a fancy logo on saying it is now YOUR vision. You took advantage of undeserved kindness to steal this to appear like a GOD. But you are only a thief, a plagiarist, and a overgrown brat that can not accept that the world will not wait for him. And you will never get respect for it." She finished her sentence, letting the static of the communicators fill the silence. Within the viewing window inside GAMMA Doctor Wily turned red. A vein popped from his forehead as he slammed the controls enough to create sparks. One giant fist raised high, preparing to slam into the building and watch the dozens of people fall into rubble. Multiple individuals screamed in fearful anticipation of their final moments. And then a refracting laser impacted the hand, bouncing back into the head and halting the assault.
"Wh-What?!" Doctor Wily sputtered, watching in astonishment as the cerulean body of Megaman flew towards the government agent.
"Thank you DLN.001. I thought he had us there for a second." Jazmyne said. Though her voice sounded collected, the wide eyes and clutched chest showed her brief panic.
"It is Megaman, Jazmyne. I will go deal with Doctor Wily now." Rock responded. Before he could turn around, the agent approached him with a shoulder pat.
"Lead GAMMA away from the city as much as you can, disable it completely, and bring Wily to us alive. I want this man behind bars for good. Understand?" She asked with a stern tone.
"...Yes." Rock could feel the agent's words settle in his processor in the midst of flying towards the threat, the sentences solidifying into orders repeating in the back of his mind. He hopped onto the transformed body of Rush and blasted towards the giant robot. Wily, who had promptly recovered from the surprise, swung his fist inside the viewing window.
"How are you STILL HERE?!? You should be destroyed! Incinerated! OBLITERATED AND LEFT TO BE SCRAP ON THE ASTEROIDS!!!" He screamed as Gamma took a swing at the cerulean robot master, only to miss and collide with a building. Rock said nothing as he flew past the hulking figure back to the river.
"Get back here you little pest!!" Wily shouted from the speakers, putting all power into the legs. Each step rumbled the ground and clouds of dust obscured the ground.
Rock weaved around the giant arms attempting to crush him, while Rush barked accordingly to his commands. He heard the faint screams of humans barely avoiding the destruction and soldiers escorting the injured away. Huge waves of water erupted as Gamma entered its bank. Rock fired plasma shots at Gamma's interior, but the shots dissipated into small smolders. Dodging another arm swing, he tried shooting at the shoulder joints only to see no damage done.
"You can try all you want Megaman, but Gamma's armor is impenetrable!! All you will do is leave scratches on its armor!" Wily laughed. He pressed a button from the console where several energy blasts erupted from the shoulders. Rush, at Rock's command, weaved through the sky and successfully dodging each shot.
"I never got to thank Thomas for everything! If he did not let his foolish naivety on second chances blind him, I would have never been able to get in contact with all my robot masters or create all of my plans! While I admit the whole Ra Moon thing derailed my initial plan to rid of you, it did something even better. It made you think I was not the in the picture anymore."
"Ra Moon nearly destroyed the world Wily! So many people died because of that thing, and you were the one to wake it up!" Rock shouted.
"I did not plan for that!!" Wily countered.
"Then why did you go back there!?" The little robot continued to demand as he avoided another right hook and energy blasts.
"Ra Moon was a mistake, but its technology was a marvel! I thought by creating a robot with technology not like yourself, you would be destroyed with it! Of course, you had to destroy any remains of the temple and any chance of recovering the technology! AND I WILL NOT STAND ANY MORE OF THIS!" Wily turned red as he fiddled with the controls.
Rock avoided the blasts as much as he could, but the fuel on Rush's jet form began to slow. The mechanical mutt whined softly with his power growing softly. A hand came close to their bodies, but Rock's well timed Gemini Laser slowed the action just enough to dive.
"I know Rush. I am trying to see if there is a weak spot anywhere." Rock scanned the hulking mass of metal and wires, but every joint had a protection plate. The smallest of cracks were not enough to fit a well placed energy blast. The backside was covered in plates of titanium and a thick collar secured vital circuits within the neck. "You have got to be-RUSH DUCK!" Rush dived downwards once more to avoid some sneaky blasts and a spiked fist.
"I am done with my glory being robbed by a man that could never keep up with me! I do not need any officials deciding if they deserve my attention! I do not need a silly governmental body that can not see past themselves! And I certainly do not need a annoying house servant robot turned glorified soldier to stand in my way! THIS ENDS HERE NOW!!" Wily screamed within Gamma's head. Rush was starting to slow down faster, the last of his reserves running out. However Rock had noticed a glow within the gaping maw of the giant machine. A glow he grew familiar in his time on the asteroids. Stuck in a metal case pulsing its energy to the rest of Gamma's body was a beautiful red energy element crystal. Even from the distance he kept, he made out its gorgeous deep red layers, a vein shaped crack, and a white pulsing light within it.
And then he thought of an idea.
"Rush, use all of your power to head as high as you can! Stop when I say so!" Rush barked on command and blasted straight up. The afternoon sun glared in their eyes and start to face Gamma's direction as the last of Rush's fuel dissipates. Rush barks in alarm as Rock hops off, plummeting quickly towards the gaping mouth. He quickly activated the Gemini laser and aimed for the head.
"Where did you go you little-?" Wily interrupted himself with a scream as the laser blinded his vision, the projectile refracting into the river. In his haste to cover his eyes, the controls flung the giant robot's arms upward, which allowed Rock to break his fall with a graceful slide and leaped into the open mouth. The energy element, glowing in a blood red hue, seemed to react to his presence. Its pulsed faster than before in a strobing effect.
"Wait! What are you doing?! Get out of there!!" Wily shouted within Gamma. Without hesitation, Rock switched to Topman's ability and swung hard into the metal casing. A loud crunch echoed inside the shell and he ripped the casing in half. The energy element released a glowing wisp that encircled Rock's form as he slowly started ripping it apart. He closed his eyes to the blinding erupting within Gamma's form. Wily's cursing quickly turned to desperate cries as sparks and and danger warnings exploded throughout the console. In his anger and mission to pull the energy element out, Rock did not notice his core glowing to the point of being visible within his own chest.
"MEGAMAN DON'T!!!" Wily cried out in desperation.
"We should have never given you a second chance." Rock said quietly, but deep inside was a seed of rage. And within the seed of rage, the light of the energy element exploded. The surge of energy blasted outwards, and the inner mechanisms of Gamma were demolished. All of the joints imploded into a ninety degree angle. All of the circuits melted into a singular blob. A fire erupted within the mouth, smoldering the outside of Gamma's face. Wily erupted into a scream as the giant robot fell forwards into the deep waters of the river. And Rock, still clutching to the pulsing crystal, was blasted outwards into the riverbank close by. His back skidded against the hard surface, whining in pain of the accumulated injuries. He could see the moment of impact between Gamma and the river. Luckily, the structures withstood the crashing waves throughout the coast.
Rock did not know how long it took for reinforcements to arrive, but helicopters slowly enveloped the sky, and dozens of boats encircled the half submerged husk of Gamma. Dozens of military soldiers lined the coasts seemingly unaware of his body clutching to the crystal. Until Jazmyne's muffled voice came closer.
"There he is. See if he is still functional." She said. Rock could feel his hand moved and chest plate open with a loud creak.
"Megaman's active but only barely. How is it even functional at this point?" A soldier asked.
"Get some mechanics in here." Jazmyne ordered.
The injuries from the asteroids and Wily's attack became too much. Even from the sun's energy, Rock felt his systems shut down. The energy element pulsed gently against his chest, and he found it strangely comforting as his vision blacked out. Even after his hearing was disabled he could a strange voice echoing in his chest.
Little...light...
