Connection

Roll had packed up the last of her things as the clouds rolled in. The Wi-lights had given their goodbyes and left before anyone asked where they were going. Every morning for two weeks they had disappeared for a majority of the day, and would only return late at night. Magnet would say they were helping out someone in need. Dr. Light would smile knowing his creations were helping people and were being given a chance. However, Roll did admit it felt weird not having them around.

As the clouds towered overhead and the first droplets tapped the windows, Roll grabbed her green coat and umbrella. She waved to any little kids and joggers passing her direction as she weaved through the path. Little robot drones flew quietly with umbrellas among the rain and Roll splashed playfully through the puddles. Trees had begun to show yellow and orange hues as the first days of fall arrived. She couldn't believe how the entire summer passed so quickly, and how so much had happened in five months.

As she walked the path to downtown, she heard a whisper from a unfamiliar voice and turned around only to see no one. She shrugged and walked alone for a few minutes before hearing the whisper again, now accompanied by another unfamiliar voice. Roll grew uneasy and whipped around violently to meet the startled figures. One was of average height with patches of blue and gold armor, which complimented his pale yellow hair dripping with rain. The other one was taller and had purple armor and a strange yellow "v" extending off the sides of his head. The purple robot smiled curiously with a wave.

"Hello there. Do you two need something?" Roll asked. The two robots blinked out of their trance before the purple one stepped forward.

"Hi! Sorry, we are just a little lost and wanted to some directions. But my buddy is really bad at asking for help." He said.

"That is the exact opposite of what happened Ballade. You're the one whose bad at directions."  The yellow haired robot gave a side squint. The purple robot Ballade laughed in embarressment and Roll approached the two with her umbrella. Standing up to the tips of her boots, she raised the umbrella past the shorter robot's head and almost colliding in an attempt to shield both of them from the increasing downpour. The robot slowly gripped the umbrella and lifted it high enough, and Roll smiled warmly. "Why did you do that?"

"I couldn't let you stand there and get drenched. Do you not have umbrellas or something to protect you?" Roll asked.

"I'm afraid we don't have a lot of supplies back at our place. Our creator is so busy that we often take care of ourselves. My name is Enker and you already know Ballade." Enker replied, and Ballade waved upon his name called. Roll blinked for a moment before gasping loudly. She smiled and hugged Enker tightly, much to the latter's confusion and discomfort.

"You're Enker?! Rock told me all about how you two met in the soccer field months ago. How have you been?"

"I-I-I'm okay. Let go please." Enker managed to get out of the hug and clutched the umbrella tightly. The three robots started to walk together through the streets of Monsteropolis, the mist offering a faint flow to car and street lights. Ballade had a look of wonder as he watched dozens of humans enter and exit stores, and it was something Roll found to be both adorable and strangely saddening.

"Have you never be to the city?" She asked.

"I have on a few occasions. But Ballade was created under bad circumstances, so this is his first time truly out on the city. We recently moved far away, and so it's hard to come here." Enker spoke softly.

"I see. Are you sad that you have to live so far away? Rock and I live with our dad and siblings closer to the forest, so it's a trip to come down here too."

"I wouldn't say it annoys me to live so far away from all the noise. I don't get along with people well, so the silence helps. On the other hand, I have over a dozen brothers to constantly get me into trouble." Enker muttered. To his surprise, Roll giggled at the statement.

"Irritating brothers? Do they make a lot of noise?" She asked.

"They are a complete nightmare. Especially two of them. Pompous, egotistical, and completely incapable of shutting up. Heh, I grow insane just by being in the same room as them. The others are fine, but I never stay if those two arrive." Enker let out a small smirk.

"Sounds like another brother I have, including have a habit of taking my mirrors. Does your dad ever say anything?" Roll rolled her eyes.

"I don't talk to him much. He rather prefers hanging out with his golden children than us most of the time." Enker said.

Roll began to ask another question before a hum from Ballade alerted their attention. Ballade pointed towards a group of shops with varying names. One was a jewelry store with fake sparkles around the flashing diamond logo, while another appeared to be a bar adjoined with a arcade center. The last one down the corner of the road was a sidewalk across the road opening to a gated sector of the city park.

"Enker, we have to go check these places out! That arcade is for competition, and I want to be the best in all of it!" Ballade shouted. Roll smiled warmly as Enker pinched the bridge of his nose.

"Ballade I already told you, we don't have the money for it. We weren't given any cash, and I'm pretty sure he said we are not to head to any bars." He sighed.

"Maybe not the bar, but what about the arcade? Come on Enker, I want to be the best at everything! I got the champion of everything, including these small games that even humans have trouble with!" Ballade complained.

"We would still need MONEY to play games. And our family is not the best with money, much less what we use it for." Enker shot back.

Ballade frowned slightly and began to walk away in defeat. Enker was about to give the umbrella back before Roll brought out some cash and coins. Unbeknownst to the other two, Ballade's eyes perked up and gave a smug smirk in Enker's direction. Roll pushed the umbrella underneath the two boys as she approached the restaurant.

"What are you doing?" Enker asked.

"Giving you two a good experience for your first time here. You don't have to worry about money. Doctor Light always gives me allowance in case I need something. Besides, I want you to enjoy this place because their soups are amazing." Roll answered. As she entered the doors,  Enker and Ballade noted the restaurant's interior compared to the outside. It's rough exterior and dark paint outside made it appear like a tough bar welcoming shouting people and fights. The inside was still dim, but lined with candles and colored glasses close to partially open shades. The bar was in the back with smells neither had known before wafting from the closed door behind it. The crowd was not too much and most of the seats were empty. Enker hummed at the aesthetic, but Ballade was upset at his expectations not meeting reality.

"Ah Ms. Roll, the same as usual?" The waiter greeted.

"Hello! I'll take a seat for me and these two right here." Roll gestured to the robot boys behind her. The waiter stared for moments before looking at Roll with a curious look.

"Your brother and father are not coming?"

"Nope! Just these two." Roll confirmed.

The waiter nodded in understanding and gave the three their seats and menus. As Roll opened her menu and started reading it through, Ballade and Enker remained hesitant in the kind gesture.

"You come here often?" Ballade asked.

"This was my favorite place to eat before all the shenanigans with our family happened. Dad often said he wanted me to find new favorite places, but I like their food here. It's cozy, especially during rain. Do you guys have preferences on what food you like?" Roll asked the two. Ballade looked confused staring into the menu, while Enker pondered through the choices.

"I'm not sure we can eat human food. How would we be able to digest it?" The purple robot questioned her.

"I'll take the udon." Enker spoke up.

"Oh that one is delicious! You made a good choice! Is it your favorite?" Roll gasped in surprise.

"I don't have favorites, but it does look appealing. And yes Ballade, the old man gave us the ability to eat food. Certain things we can't eat like sweets, but we are okay otherwise. You can take my word on it, because I helped with your construction." Enker shrugged. As the waiter came back, Roll filled in her and Enker's orders as Ballade ordered a very strong drink. They disappeared into the kitchen, leaving the three watching each other.

"Since you didn't get to answer me at the park, how have you been? I'm sure you two heard heard about the EMP that happened a month ago. So many people got hurt, and robots too. I hope you and your family weren't too injured during the waves." Roll noticed the flinch in Enker's posture before he composed himself.

"It wasn't easy. Our creator had grown sick due to the lack of food, and our home was in shambles. Our life became a dump. After the wave went through, all of us had to work really hard to build everything back up, including our old man's health." Enker murmured. Roll's stomach dropped despite her hunger.

"That must've been hard for you."

"Our brothers are fine, the house is almost done, and our creator is just about back at full health. Respectfully Roll, why do you care about us? We just met, and yet you're willing to do all of this for nothing in return?" Enker asked. He leaned back slightly and the two stared into each other's eyes. Roll didn't realize how little emotion there was behind his eyes. His green eyes were dim even as he asked the question again. She gazed at Ballade, who had so much life behind his eyes compared to his brother, before returning the gaze to the former as the waiter came with the food.

"I care for everyone around me, even other robots. It's who I am." She said.

"Here you go. Your favorite Ms. Roll, a very strong oil tank for the purple robot, and a udon for you sir. Let me know if there's anything else you need." The waiter presented the food. As Roll quietly ate her food, Ballade stared at the tank before proceeding to almost inhale the drink. Enker stared at the contents of the udon and reached in for the first gulp, humming to the plentiful tastes of the noodles and soup. The aroma was something he couldn't put in words, but the taste drove him to continue. A human couple took seats behind them, chatting happily as they were handed their menus. Ballade continued to take huge gulps of his drink and Roll did not make a sound, allowing him to listen to their conversation.

"-all over the news. Mayor Leo wants to change the city's name under the name of Megaman. They even have a special event for it next week with Thomas Light as a supervisor." The male said.

"But why only the name? I mean that little robot has done so much for us, but should we really rename our entire city for him? Isn't he done with fighting?" The female hummed.

"I think it's not a bad idea. It's the mayor's way of thanking him for saving all of us."

"I think it's all for advertisement purposes." The female shrugged.

"Oh you say that for everything." The male chuckled. The three had finished and paid for their meals as the couple continued to talk. Ballade had started to wobble from the oil drink's effects, lightly tapping Enker on the shoulder with a drunk smile.

"Hey Enker, I need to ask you something alone. Do you mind?" Roll asked softly.

"Ballade, wait here. It won't be too long." Enker hesitated slightly. Ballade babbled incoherent words as he closed his eyes against the alley wall. He slid off the wall before hitting the floor in a seemingly uncomfortable position, mumbling quietly to himself. Enker shook his head slightly and returned the attention to Roll. "What is it?"

"I didn't know how to ask you this back at the restaurant. Are you okay?" Roll walked up and for his hand.

"Why do you ask?"

"I thought when you were talking about your father and brothers, I thought you were joking and simply tired over what had happened. But your eyes, you don't seem happy. Is there something that you're scared to say?" She pressed on. Enker's eyes darted to the side a few times, as if he was alarmed of her questions.

"It's nothing for you to be concerned about. What happens with my...family is with me. You shouldn't worry about me." Enker said.

"It's my nature to be worried for everyone. If people are in trouble, I can't sit around and watch them get hurt. That's why I hated watching Megaman fight for all of us. He needed help at times and I wasn't able to do anything. I felt...useless." Roll murmured, clinging to her green coat. The last droplets of rain dripped from the hoodie as Enker knelt down, the umbrella barely touching the hair.

"If you were there with Megaman and saw what was coming, would you still want to help him? Would you trust in him if you barely knew him? If he were to have a side to him you hated, would you still fight with him?" He asked seriously. Roll stomped her foot aggressively, surprising the male robot as she grabbed the hand with the umbrella.

"I would take the hit if it meant he, along with everyone else, would be okay. A little kindness for another can do wonders. It can make people feel better in a time of sadness. It might help your relationship with your father and brothers." She suggested.

"We weren't really friendly with each other before, so how do you know if suddenly one act of kindness would help cement whatever relationship you think we could have?" Enker lightly scoffed, only to receive a light punch to the shoulder.

"If you don't try, then you will never know. I don't know what your life is like, but I know you and I care about our families. Because if you didn't, you wouldn't have repaired your creator's house and make sure everyone was taken care of. Maybe you just need to tell your family that you care, but in your own way. I believe in you Enker." Enker jolted back as the last sentence escaped from Roll's mouth. His mouth slightly twitched and his other arm clenched tightly. His eyes gazed at the unconscious figure of Ballade, slowly exhaling in realization behind the words given to him. For a moment as the golden haired robot stood up, Roll swore she saw the smallest smirk etched across the face and a flicker of light in his eyes.

"I'll think about it. Thanks Roll." He said.

Roll smiled and took the umbrella from his hands. Ballade started to wake up and pressed his back against the wall, his legs shaking violently like they were seconds from collapsing. The two wordlessly came to the purple robot's side and let him use their shoulder as a crutch.

"I think we should go for another d-drink~." Ballade muttered.

"What we are going to do is take you back home. You're wobbling like jelly." Enker stated.

"You're jelly~!! Ballade laughed.

"Would you like me to help you two get home?" Roll asked. Enker shook his head vigorously and slung the arm of his drunk brother over his shoulder.

"We'll just head home ourselves. Thank god we fixed the teleporter before coming here. Let me just-"

"Wait! Before you go, can you make a link with me?" She didn't mean to shout and latch on to his hand. Even in his drunken state, Ballade shared the same baffled expression all over Enker's face.

"What." He said in the most flat, but surprised tone possible.

"I saw how much you enjoyed the udon at the diner, and you said it takes a lot of energy to come here, so I'd like to give you the recipe as a souvenir. But I don't have any paper, so I thought exchanging it through a link." The more Roll rambled on, she started to realize what she was saying and shared the awkwardness. A link for a robot master is a very big deal, especially in her family. When a link is made between two robot masters, it creates a personal network between them and sharing personal thoughts. Memories can be accessed by either robot, emotions can be felt between the two, and overall create a deeper understanding. Only robot masters are capable of making links, and they are rare around the world so making a link with another one of her kind is still new. She had only had links with her brothers, and here she is asking a robot she met hours ago to create one for the sake of a recipe. Suddenly she didn't mind just disappearing back home to save her from the embarressment.

"Seems awfully weird to have a link mostly to exchange food." He said.

"If you don't want it, that's fine-" She stuttered slightly. To her surprise, Enker cut her off with his hand.

"No I'll take it."

With a nod, Roll tapped her head gently and heard a soft buzz. The buzz continued as she looked in Enker's eyes as he proceeded mimic her tapping. Roll felt the presence of his link trying to break through, and it was stronger than she thought. She hesitated before granting the link. She gathered the information of several recipes and began the transfer into Enker's mind. Enker perked up as he received the information which quickly morphed into confusion.

"That's a lot more than once recipe. And what's this address you gave me?" He asked.

"In case you ever need someone to talk to, you can come over to my house on the other side of town. Doctor Light would love to meet you, and I think Rock would be happy to know you're okay. And if you want, I could show you how to cook more udon." She said.

"Thank you Roll. Your father and brothers are lucky to have someone like you." He gave a smirk and nodded goodbye as the teleportation triggered. A bright flash enveloped the two robots and leaving Roll alone in the alley. She had a smile for the entire walk home, leaving her brothers only to wonder what had made their sister so much.
