interview #25 @Abibee

1 what's one Wattpad goal?

Finish all the incomplete stories I've had up here for years without getting distracted by new ideas

2 are you still surprised when you get a new vote, follow or comment?

I am, and I'm always delighted! I try to reply to comments too (unless they're just an emoji reaction), because I figure it's only polite if the reader has made the effort to engage like that.

3 what inspired you to write?

I've scribbled since my early teens, but I was inspired to make it public when I discovered another (now defunct) platform for women's writing; when that folded, I came on here (in 2013!)

4 if you could hang out with your favorite celeb for a day, who would you choose and what would you do?

I'm not a big follower of celebs, but I always think the comedian Lucy Porter would be great fun to have a drink with.

5 what's your favorite holiday and why?

The Scottish Highlands - there is a particular light quality, and I love the colour of heather. London is fun in small doses, too, and has great museums.

6 what's your schedule regarding your writing?

Schedule?! I always intend do a bit most nights, but often fail. If the mood is on me, though, I can lose hours, especially at weekends. Doing the ONC this year meant I had to force myself to write most days in order to meet the timetable, which was hard work but satisfying.

7 what's your favorite thing about Wattpad?

The connection with readers (and other writers) all over the world.

8 what's the best way to handle a bully?

This is easier said than done, but: be happy with yourself. I've found that if you can accept yourself, what the bullies say will hopefully not matter, or even be irrelevant. Bullies are weak people, and have no power over someone who doesn't care what others think. (Being nice to them confuses them, too!)

9 what's your favorite story?

I don't have a favourite, either on here on in print - it depends on my mood. EM Forster's 'Maurice' had a profound effect on me when I was younger, though, about the time I was coming out to myself.

10 what's a good piece of advice for a newcomer?

Find a way to make sure it's always fun - there's no point otherwise. Also, proofread everything at least twice before publishing.

11 how would you celebrate a publishing deal?

I'm not interested in one, so I wouldn't; I'd probably start worrying about what to write next.

Request time

I'd suggest people try the collection of short stories I wrote as a result of various prompts last year. There's a range of genres (folktale-inspired, crime(ish), fantasy) all with a lesbian twist, and personally I'm quite pleased with them. They also all have the great advantage of being short, so no-one will have wasted their time!
