interview #24 @AdamCavelle (joint account)
1) What's a song you enjoy? Who is the artist?
A: "Midnight" by Lianne La Havas. This song makes me smile without fail.
C: "Moments in the Mountains" by Madison Olds always reminds me of Taylor for some reason.
2) Are you still surprised when you get a vote, follow or comment?
A: Oh yeah. It seems so unreal that so many people are enjoying our story and complimenting our writing.
C: Yes! We were a little nervous putting Silver Lake out there for the world to see, but you guys know how to make a person feel good!
3) What is your favorite thing about Wattpad?
A: It's really cool to get to read other peoples' stories. It's neat when I find a really well-written one, but even some of the rougher writing still has a great story or characters underneath it. It's just great to see so many people being encouraged to write more.
C: I love how supportive the community is. Social media and the internet as a whole can be such a toxic environment at times, but this community has been absolutely amazing. I love the honest feedback and being able to read so many incredible and creative stories from others.
4) What inspired you to write?
A: I'm not really sure when I started writing. I feel like I've wanted to tell stories in some form as long as I can remember. Over the years I've spent more or less of my time focused on writing, but I always come back to it in some way. Perhaps it's an overactive imagination, but I feel like it's very easy for me to get lost in my own imagined worlds.
C: I was literally 'writing' stories before I could actually write. My parents would buy me notebooks and pencils to keep me busy and I would have them filled with scribbles I thought were words. I would proudly show off my work to anyone who would let me babble off what those scribbles said. I learned how to write basic words through writing stories and driving my parents insane by asking how to spell each word as I went. In elementary school I was writing chapter books and it just sort of continued from there.
5) what is the best way to handle a bully?
A: I don't know if I'm qualified to answer this question. My general policy is to ignore bullies. But I don't know if that's always the best, and it certainly depends on what kind of bullying we're talking about. I will say, though, if it's online, don't hesitate to block people. You don't owe it to anyone to hear or read them talk crap about you.
C: Engaging typically just fuels the fire, especially on the internet. They want a reaction from you and like Adam said, you don't owe them anything. Block them and move on. I know it's a cliche to say that bullies are just jealous of you, but in a lot of cases it's true. Either way, remember how awesome you are, keep that chin up, and don't feed into it!
6) If you could hang out with your favorite celebrity, who would you choose and what would you do?
A: I found out recently that Brie Larson likes rock climbing. I'd go bouldering with Brie! She seems pretty chill.
C: I swear, name 'your favourite' type questions give me anxiety. How is it possible to pick just one? I'd go with Taylor Swift because I love how she boosts people up rather than trying to strip them down. We live in a time where, we (especially women) seem to believe the only way we can be successful is by diminishing the success of others when that isn't the case. I also love the fact that she isn't afraid to experiment, try something new, and break all the rules in the process.
7) what's a good piece of advice for a newcomer?
A: I don't know if I have much advice for a WattPad newcomer. I'm lucky in that Cavelle has been handling most of the social side of things here. I've been able to really focus on the writing and editing.
C: If you want people to read your work you need to be willing to do the same. Wattpad is an amazing community of writers and readers. Find books you love, comment on them, vote for them, watch what the authors are doing to get eyes on their book. Don't beg people to read your work. Instead, be supportive of others and there is a good chance they'll support you back.
8) What's your favorite holiday and why?
A: Maybe Halloween? It's the one holiday that seems to be mostly centered around having fun and not having to deal with family you'd rather not see. It doesn't center itself around spending lots of money on gifts or food at a time when many people are already struggling with money. It really is just a holiday about having a big party in the woods with friends while wearing weird costumes.
C: Christmas! But not because of the gifts and all that. I'm from a small town where everyone knows everyone. I have a huge family and Christmas was one of the times we would always get together and laugh until we cry, eat way too much food, and at some point instruments would usually come out. I think I took them for granted when I was younger, because as an adult, I definitely miss the holidays back home. Also, my guilty pleasure is definitely those cheesy Christmas movies. I hate them so much, but I will binge them for hours!
9) Who is your favorite author?
A: Bill Bryson. His books are funny, even when they're explaining complicated topics and delving deep into historical context. I love his writing style and find myself just drawn deep into each of his books.
C: I can't even answer this. I read everything, no genre is left untouched, how do I pick just one author!?! I'll say Margaret Atwood, because she's in between the classics and the modern and her books both thought provoking and incredibly unique.
10) what is your favorite movie?
A: Hunt for the Wilderpeople, written and directed by Taika Waititi. Hilarious and heartfelt.
C: These favorite questions are killing me. I'll say How To Train Your Dragon because it's my go-to when I've just had a terrible day and need to smile. I want a toothless of my own.
11) how would you enjoy a rainy day?
A: If it's cold outside, I'm going to sit inside and listen to an audiobook while making a giant pot of ramen. If it's warm, I'll go out to the garage and open the big door and put on some music by The National and work on my motorcycle.
C: I love the rain and I also live in a valley surrounded by mountains. One of my favorite things to do when it rains is head up the backroads to the forest and hang out on the mountain with my pups. I swear the rain is like hitting a reset button, everything smells and feels so fresh and new during/after a good rain. Plus, the fog that settles into the trees can be an absolutely beautiful sight from the top of a mountain.

Silver Lake – It's the story of a couple of normal kids, dealing with the kinds of things that all of us can remember dealing with. Our crush not feeling the way we do, first kisses, growing distant from friends, discovering new and exciting friends. It's all set to a backdrop of the mid 1990's, but the experiences it focuses on are universal. We worked hard to build our main characters into as whole and complete people who we hope will remind readers of themselves, their friends, or schoolmates. Or maybe all three. We avoided a lot of the worst cliches of teen drama by making sure our characters act like real people.
