interview #5 @_jnicole_
1 what is the best way to handle a bully?
As hard as it can be, I believe the best way to handle a bully is to stick up for yourself. Of course, I don't mean that you have to do this all by yourself. Seek the help of your friends, your parents/teachers, anyone you can trust—but in the end, if you stick up for yourself, the bully will no longer see you as a target. They pick on people who they assume are weak and will give them the gratification they need. If you rob them of that satisfaction, most times, they'll leave you be.
2 what is one Wattpad goal?
I don't know if this Wattpad-specific, but I would love to write someone's favorite character of all time. A lot of writing is connecting with people, after all, so I'd love to write a character that resonated with someone that deeply. I guess that would mean I'm doing my job.
3 what's your favorite snack?
Oreos. Thanks to my very healthy parents I rarely get them, so when I do, I savor them. (No, really. If you buy me Oreos I'll love you forever).
4 if you could hang out with your favorite celeb for a day, who would you choose and what would you do?
I've put this in my bio, but for those of you who are unaware, I'm an avid Kpop fan. For that reason I'd have to pick Kim Taehyung of BTS. I would love to just spend a day in the city (any city at all, honestly) walking around with him and talking. If not for romantic purposes, he just seems like he'd be a good friend.
5 Are you still surprised when you get a new vote, follow or comment?
Yes! I guess I'm just sort of used to occupying my tiny, solitary corner of Wattpad that the attention is still a bit new to me. I am continually surprised by the amount of love I'm getting from this community and I can only hope they feel that same love from me.
6 what's your favorite holiday and why?
Tough one, but I'd have to go Halloween on this one. Fall is my favorite season, first of all, and I also just love the spooky festivities that surround Halloween.
7 what's a good piece of advice for a newcomer?
Read. I know some writers that don't want to read other writers' works for fear of sounding too much like them, but how else do we learn how to do what we do without imitation first? So read. Read books you like, and examine them for what you like about them. (Is it the organization of the sentences? The description? The characters' chemistry?) Read books you don't like, and examine what you don't like about them. (Is the pacing off? Did the ending leave too many loose ends? Were the characters or the settings too flat?) People have been telling stories for ages, so every story is somewhat a version of another story. In the end, however, your story is still yours to write.
8 what's a song you enjoy? Who is the artist?
I'm a big Hozier fan. Of course I love "Take Me to Church," but my current favorite is "Movement" off his most recent album.
9 if you could gain advice from your favorite author, who would you choose and what would you ask?
I would choose the late Toni Morrison. I would want to know what advice she has for me as a black female writer in an area where we're certainly not the most prominent demographic. Her stories are some of the most important tales of black culture and the black journey, after all, and I would have loved to talk to her.
10 how would you celebrate a publishing deal?
An ice cream sundae, a good movie, and friends!
request time
Though it's not my most popular, I would suggest reading 100 Yellow Doors. It's a long, emotional story of a strange friendship between a vampire and a time traveler, and it has some moments that you will make you cry, some that will make you swoon, and some that will make you laugh. I'm very proud of it, overall. Please consider giving it a look!
