Meet Philippines!

Basic Info:

Full Name: Republic of the Philippines

Human Name: Catalina dela Cruz

Age: 19

Gender: Female

Birthday: June 12

Hair Color: Dark Brown (shade lighter than black)

Eye Color: Brown

Height: 152 cm (5'0")

Attributes:

Appearance:
She has dark brown hair that is often tied up in a tight bun and brown eyes. Sampaguitas (national flower of Philippines) decorate her hair. Her common attire is a simple kimona blouse with a saya (skirt). She often carries a basket of mangoes around with her.

The three sampaguitas on her kimona represent the three largest islands: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

Personality and Interests:

Philippines is a cheery, happy-go-lucky nation who is unfortunately very gullible. It often leads her to be conquered and invaded multiple times in her life and puts her in the middle of wars. Despite this, she consistently puts on a smile and a strong front, telling others that "she can take care of herself", even though most of the time that's not true.

At times, her positivity can rub off on other people. She's very friendly, but she's a bit closed off when it comes to meeting new people. Expect a mango every time you converse with her. Her way on conversation is always polite and respectful, but she's a bit touchy about her (very) short height. She has the habit of being late to every event she attends, much to the chagrin of her friends.

Mangoes are an all-time favorite food, and she's a bit of a glutton. Hobbies include dancing and weaving, and she always enjoys a good company. While not very invested in her role as a nation, she is fiercely loyal and is a true patriot to her people. She's skilled in Arnis, a type of Filipino martial arts, but it's rare to see her actually do it.

Relationships:

America:

The two are best of friends. They have a rich history together, having conspired together in both the Spanish-American War and WWII and helping each other when the need was great. Their friendly exteriors, love of independence and food, and other common interests let them have a lot to discuss with each other. America is known to tease Philippines in a friendly way, in which she would always lightly smack him on the shoulder, trying to hold back laughter and come up with a retort.

Meeting after the Spanish-American War, Philippines was "given over" to America after he won the war. Despite granting Philippines the ability to regain country status after hundreds of years, America always felt that she needed "a hero in her life!" and didn't quite recognize her as a true country until after a while, despite she constantly telling him that she didn't need "lessons".

Following the events of WWII, the two helped each other to their feet after the both of them suffering the effects of the war. The time Philippines spent as his territory was the time they spent recuperating, and when she asked to be her own country again, America granted it freely this time, and he recognized her as a real country from that start.

China:

These two don't really like each other. For some reason, every time they try to interact, it just turns into an argument about land use, land ownership, or something else geographical. The only thing they agree on is to not interact at all with the other.

Before Philippines went under Spain's care, the small country at the time rocked between China's and Japan's care, back and forth. She mostly spent time with China, before she was taken in by Spain.

Japan:

Despite being on better terms than in the past, the two are still rather awkward around each other. They can't quite forget the repetitive times Japan conquered Philippine's land both when she was a young child and during WWII. It's not as awkward that they can't sit next to each other, but they prefered if they didn't speak to the other.

In Japan's conquest in WWII, Philippines was inevitably swept up in the chaos and was forced under house arrest by Japan during the war. That time, however, was brief, and soon she was forced to hold Japan's soldiers and equipment on her islands as she herself became an impromptu secretary. Of course, she tried conspiring with the Allies during this time, but repeatedly failed as Japan caught her every time.

After the war, neither of them spoke to the other for at least a decade, until prompting from other countries made them reconcile into an uneasy truce.

Spain:

Spain conquered Philippines after Magellan's journey around the world, bringing her to his house and, like Romano, made Philippines his minion. Philippines obliged with no argument, happily agreeing to be Spain's servant, but she refused to call him Boss (instead calling him an affectionate "Kuya Spain") and not doing much work.

As time went on, however, she eventually wanted to become her own country. She asked many times for independence, but Spain would never grant it. Come the Spanish-American War, Philippines conspired against Spain to help America win the war in a desperate attempt for independence. Surprisingly, it worked; Spain was forced to give over Philippines to America, if not begrudgingly.

Even after that, whenever the two meet, they still treat the other with the same cordial respect they had before that War. Their relationship is more of a father-daughter type of relationship, very much like other colony relationships.

South Italy:

In Philippine's few hundred years under Spain's care, the two small countries met as both "minions" of "Boss". During this time, their relationship slowly evolved into a sibling-like one, the two caring for each other (but not without the usual brother-sister arguments). But when they left Spain's care and became independent, they didn't interact for a long time.

During WWII, she was able to see Romano once or twice, both of them surprised at the other's presence. Their dislike with the Axis countries brought them together during those brief moments, talking about their present situation. However, those times were brief, and they never really made any other attempt to connect during that time.

In present day, they don't interact much. The only times they truly meet are during the World Meetings, where the two share some words before leaving. It's not that they don't like each other, no... They do like each other.
