Chapter 3

The following day, I got ready, grabbed my belongings, and prepared all my documents. I was confident that the new hospital would hire me today. When I arrived downstairs, my cousin was practicing her ramp walk and I started eating breakfast.

"Don't be nervous, baby, you will win this pageant," Chachi said to Divya as she walked with confidence and attitude.

"I need to be perfect, Mama. The city's top eligible bachelors will judge the show. I want to give it my all. You never know who will fall for me, mama," Divya exclaims.

"Mummy, if one of those is impressed by me, imagine me marrying him and living in complete luxury. We won't have to beg for money from anyone," Divya says as she looks at me. My grandfather has set aside monies for them to look after me. That has been the only thing they have done for me.

She sat down at the table and stared at me after some practice. Today I ate a paratha that was prepared in pure ghee.

"Do you still want to eat unhealthy food after all this drama?" Divya said. I stared at her, bewildered, and then at Chachi, who appeared embarrassed.

"What exactly are you talking about?" I confronted her.

"You know, Mrs. Bansal called late at night and said she doesn't want an overweight cow to marry her son. She'll get her son married to a lovely woman with a good upbringing," Divya remarked mockingly.

"Divya, put a stop to it." But it's too late for Chachi to stop Divya; I've heard enough. I smile at them both after finishing the paratha down, before grabbing the bag and heading off to find my new job. I hate wasting food.

After each interview, the day seems to get worse. Some positions for the job were already filled, while others stated that they did not want me. Two hospitals accepted my résumé and said that they would contact me. It was already nine o'clock at night when I dropped off my resume at the last hospital of the day; I couldn't find a bus back home and had to walk up to my home; the distance wasn't too far, so walking was the best option, and the area was safe.

While traveling down the road, I noticed a fire blazing and then heard a boom in the direction I was going. I sped up my legs to figure out what was going on. Just as I arrived, I discovered someone lying near the blast. She was an elderly lady who must have struggled to escape the car. Fortunately, she had succeeded before the explosion. Her driver was covered in blood and lay alongside her.

As I approached the victim, I noticed that he was breathing heavily. I turned her head and saw the look of surprise on her face. She was a quiet old lady fighting to live. I summoned an ambulance and waited for it to transport these two people.

With blood on my hands, I stayed outside the operating room, pleading for the driver's and the elderly lady's lives. My entire thought was on the individual who was still breathing and living. I kept tapping the floor and rubbing my hand, making it redder. I was hoping for their survival.

Three hours later, a man came juggling toward the operating room. It was Raj. He turned his head and was taken aback by what he saw.

"Did you bring her?" He inquired nicely, and I nodded.

"How did you get here?"

"She was bleeding and lying on the car with the driver," I explained.

"Thank you so much for bringing her here." I bowed in thanks and returned to praying with shaking hands. Later that night, at midnight, I called Chachi and informed her that there was an emergency at the hospital.

The night moved to daylight, but the light in the operating room remained on. How long should I continue to pray for her life? How long should I stay seated to get good news from the doctor inside?

"You- should rest, you haven't blinked your eyes since last night," Raj continued, but I shook my head.

"I'll wait until the operation is finished," I said.

"Why should you care? My employer even insulted you and fired you the day before?" Raj interrogated her.

"What does that incident have to do with this thing?" I puzzledly asked.

Raj inquired, "You don't know who she is?" My head shook.

"My boss is Agastya Kashyap, the most powerful man in the city, and the lady you saved last night is his grandmother, his Nani, Rani Desai," Raj explained, and I was stunned.

"I would have saved her regardless of her status," I replied.

"He must have done a good deed in his previous life to have stumbled across you in this life, because he has been nothing but a ruthless jerk to you in this entire time you two have met." Raj laughed.

"Are you his employee, right?" I looked at him, perplexed.

"I'm the only one he can trust, but sometimes I don't understand what's going on in his head, and that day was one of those days. He was about to get what he had sought his entire life, but it blew away, and you were the one who received his fury." Raj elaborated.

"I see," I said, nodding.

"Don't worry, I'll make sure you return to this hospital as a reward for saving his Nani," Raj replied, and I just nodded.

The light in the operating room was finally turned out, and the doctor exited.

"How is she doing, doctor?" For the first time in nine hours, I sprang from my chair and dashed toward the doctor to inquire about Nani's condition.

"It's critical; we have to keep an eye on her. Her brain cells have been severely injured as a result of the accident, and she is not responding to treatment. She may go into a coma or be brain dead for the next 48 hours, and her age is also a factor to be considered," the doctor said to both of them.

"Her grandson is away in London; I've been trying to contact him since the evening, but his cell phone is unreachable; for the time being, I'm the closest person to her," Raj explained.

"We need a signature on some papers stating that if anything goes wrong, the state hospital will not be held liable for the patient's death." Raj nodded as the doctor informed him.

"Will she die?" I asked the doctor, my voice shaking and my eyes welling up. My nose and eyes were both as red as a cherry.

"We can't say anything, my dear." Doctor Khan stroked my shoulder and walked right by both of them.

"You were there for a long time, go home, and I will see that you get your job back," Raj remarked. I reluctantly returned home, but my thoughts and prayers were with Nani. I wished for her survival.

I went to Nani's room the following day, and she was conscious, and the driver was well too. When I entered her room, I noticed her sitting near the sofa. She gave me a friendly smile.

Just after that, a nurse entered the room and said Doctor needed to speak with Raj regarding Nani's condition. Raj exited the room and followed the nurse with one last peak at us. I was intrigued and took a deep breath, wondering what they would discuss.

According to the discussion, Nani responded to the treatment and was deemed acceptable.

We were standing outside Nani's ward while the doctor conducted the examination.

" She is now fine. We owe you a big thank you," Raj Sad said, taking my hand in his.

"It is my responsibility to save people. Where has your boss gone?" I confronted him.

"He has landed, he will be here soon," Raj remarked as I entered the room and saw the old lady who had been struggling with life the day before.

"How are you?" I inquired. Her smile reached her eyes, and she appeared to be a frail lady.

"I'm doing well. Thank you for saving my life," she whispered, placing her hand on mine.

"You saved my life when I was lying on the side of the road asking for help and no one came to help me. I'm getting on in years, but I promised my grandson that I wouldn't die until he found his partner. That boy deserves someone who will love him," she added suddenly, her face sad.

"Don't worry, everything will be fine," I murmured as the door unexpectedly opened.

I turned to see the man who had insulted me and called me slurs a few days before, but he was now a bawling mess. He dashed over and wrapped his arms around her.

"I'm fine, Agastya. Don't worry," she replied as she patted his back.

"How did this happen?......" he said to Raj, but his gaze fell on me.

"Why is this fatty here?" he inquired of Raj.

"Listen..." I tried to speak.

"No, you better listen. Just because I threw you out and showed you your place does not obligate you to exact revenge on me. Do you have any idea who I'm, miss?" Agastya clenched his teeth.

"You are a Mr. A...."

"Go get lost. Get lost before I go insane and choke you right here, I don't want to see your face." Agastya yelled.

"I..."

"How much money do you want?" Agastya remained silent.

"Don't act like an innocent lady; you understand what I mean. Sluts like you are always whoring about money." I was speechless when Agastya insulted me Infront of Nani. I'd seen and heard a lot of humiliation, but this was a whole new level.

"Don't try to entice me, bitch; I'm aware of your tricks, and your spell will not work around me. Why are you so close to me and the individuals I work with? Do you need money? You're either a slut or a gold digger. Or is it my sexual allure? Or-" Nani yelled at him just then before he continued insulting me more.

"Please stop cursing at the lady in front of me. I thought I raised you well, Agastya, but you disappoint me," the old lady exclaimed. I couldn't take any more insults, so I excused myself and raced out of the room, tears streaming down my cheeks.
