[7] London
PAN'S P.O.V (surprise!)
I didn't know what exactly was wrong with Elli, but I figured she was sick or something. I had asked Faith about a billion times, but she always changed the subject.
Always.
Faith and I were close friends, and I trusted her with my life, but the trust didn't always seem to be mutual. Especially around Elli. I tried telling myself Faith was just protective of her. We all are. Elli's the youngest at age 12, so it made sense. Yet I couldn't help feel as if I were missing something. Like the last piece of a jigsaw puzzle.
So you can imagine my frustration when I was told to decide whether or not to let Elli stay. Of courses I wanted her to stay, but I knew there was something wrong with her and it was probably safest to send her back to the Hut.
It was my emotions against my sense.
My emotions won.
"Let Elli stay," I said. "She's part of the team."
"May I ask what's wrong with Elli?" Medusa interjected.
Faith glared at her. "I'm sorry, but that's non of your business."
Elli opened her mouth to say something but before she got a single word out, Faith said,"Elli no," without looking at her.
Before Medusa or Elli could respond, the lost boys began to shout.
"Pan!" Tootles called. "She's ready!"
"Setting sail!" I yelled. "Let's see how she flys."
The whole ship rumbelled (get the reference?) and lifted into the air.
"Look, I'm sorry." Faith was saying to Medusa when I walked back to them. "I'm just protective of Elli is all. She's like a sister to me. And if anything happened to her," she cast me glance," the results wouldn't be pretty."
Medusa smiled a little. "I understand."
"It's late; you three should get to bed," I said to the girls. "Cubby will show you where your rooms are."
Cubby grinned and walked down the hall, the girls following. Elli hesitated, smiling at me over her shoulder. Thanks, she mouthed, and disappeared down the hall,
Sighing, I made my way to the helm. Tootles sat, looking at the stars. All of my boys where lost before I found them, and gave them a home. Tootles was my right hand man, and no matter what I gave him, what I let him do, at the end of the day he was still an orphan.
"The ship can steer itself, you know," I told him, sitting next to him.
"I like steering," he replied simply.
"You know where we're going?"
He nodded. "Of course. London."
" I have to see her."
I didn't say who; there was no need to. Tootles knew.
"How many years has it been?"
I thought for a second then answered, "72 years I believe."
After she had left, I'd visited her every couple of months. But it became too painful to see her grow up from a distance. She became too old for me. Forgot about me. Left me. I spent 70 years in Neverland trying to forget about her. Then the attack came and we all fled. It is true, I lost some of my lost boys. I never forgave myself. Their blood was on my hands, but there was nothing I could do now but stop living in the past.
But I had see her.
"Peter?" Tootles asked after a couple minutes of silence.
"Yes?"
"What if she's moved. What if she's d-" he stopped himself. I knew what he was thinking.
"We can only hope. Now get some sleep. I'll keep watch."
After Tootles was gone, I lay on my backed looking at the sky. I must have dozed off, because when I awoke, the moon was high in the sky.
Slowly, I sat up and looked around. A slight movement caught my eye, and I moved towards the edge of the deck. A girl stood there, wearing a nightgown the color of the moon, her dark hair falling in waves down her back.
Elli.
She was singing softly to herself, a song I didn't recognize. Her voice was sweet, it reminded me of home, of the summers in Neverland when I raced through the forests with the boys.
The song changed to a bittersweet melody, and I remembered the fallen Lost Boys.
She gazed up at the moon and began to sniffle. At first I thought she might have a cold but then I realized she was crying, almost silently.
"You okay?" I asked.
She jumped and spun to face me, relaxing a bit when she saw who it was.
"I am fine," she said nodding.
I stepped toward her. "You don't look fine." I took another step. We were so close I could smell her hair. It smelled of honeysuckle. Without thinking, I brought my hand to her face, and wiped a way a tear with my thumb.
She caught her breath, but I didn't move. I was probably making her uncomfortable, but I was curious as to why she was awake and crying.
"Elli," I said, my voice gentle." You can tell me what's wrong."
She looked down at her feet, then back up at me. In the light of the moon, she looked beautiful. I had never seen her with her hair down, it was always braided.
"It's his birthday." She whispered.
"Who's?" I asked instantly.
"Phillip." Her eyes met mine, and they were full of sadness and hurt. "H-he was my best friend. But-"
I waited as Elli tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.
"He's gone now."
That was all she said. That was all she had to say.
"I'm sorry, Elli."
She laughed bitterly, without humor. This surprised me. I was accustomed to seeing her happy and full of spirit. So different from this.
"The words 'I'm sorry' can sound so empty."
I didn't say anything. What could you say in a situation like this? Certainly not "I'm sorry."
After a few minutes of silence, Elli asked, "where are we going?"
"London."
"London? But why? Rumpelstiltskin is in-"
"I know. But I...have to see someone first."
"Can they help us?" She asked while wiping away the last of the tears. Her tone was eager, like she wanted nothing more than to save the day.
I sneezed. "Possibly."
I glance at the moon, and attempted to make small talk. "It's almost full moon. Maybe a couple more days?"
Elli's whole body tensed. "Your right. Look, I'm tired. I should probably get to bed. Um, goodnight."
She left before I could respond. I spent the rest of the night dreaming of London. Was it possible she was still in the nursery? I knew my chances were less than slim, but they were my only chances.
When morning came I was exhausted from lack sleep. We all ate a quick breakfast, and finished as London came into view.
"This is it boys." I called. "Time to find Wendy."
