Chapter Ten

"Alright guys, I've called in this meeting to remind you about the trip in a week, and to tell you who's going." Dr. Sullivan smiled at all of the people sitting in the room. Tamara sat on her hands between Nathan and Sasha, to stop herself from wiggling about to much. When she got excited, she wiggled. A trait she didn't particularly like, but hey, she got it from her mother.

"First of all, the lucky few that are going, I want you to stay after this so I can run you through a bit more. As for the ones who weren't picked, your turn will be the next time we do a trip. Okay, first one." Dr. Sullivan paused, looking around the room again.

Tamara glanced over at Josh, who sat with a couple of the other doctors, and looked almost bored with what Dr. Sullivan was saying. Probably because he was already going, Tamara thought, but didn't let that dim her hope of getting picked.

"Nathan, you're number one!" Dr. Sullivan laughed as he hissed yesssss, then looked at Sasha. "You too Sasha. Oh, and Tamara?"

She looked at him nervously. "You'll be going with them as well."

It was all Tamara could do just to say sitting. She wanted to happy dance, but one; she was a terrible dancer and two; well, she was a terrible dancer.

She barely heard the rest of the names called out. When the rest of the room departed, Tamara stood, looking at Sasha excitedly.

"This is going to be the best trip ever!" Sasha giggled, and Tamara rolled her eyes.

"This is a work trip, not a cheer leading camp."

"Same thing, there's still going to be boys there."

"I'm starting to wonder if you became a nurse for the right reasons, or for the perks."

Sasha elbowed her, but it was half hearted. Tamara was as psyched as Sasha was, she was just better at hiding it.

They filed out of the staff room, still chattering excitedly about the trip, until Tamara noticed someone behind her.

Rose's eyes were glued to her back in the fashion that she could easily read as 'I really don't like you'. Tamara stopped, and turned to face her.

"Is there something you'd like to say to me, Rose?" Tamara asked, her voice even, and folded her arms, waiting. Rose rolled her eyes, and stopped also.

"Well, yes."

Tamara waited, but Rose didn't say anything else.

"Well spit it out."

"I need you to back off Josh, okay Jacobs?" Rose said, stepping closer slightly. Tamara felt her eyebrows shoot to the top of her hairline, shocked that she would even bring him up.

"What-I'm confused." She said, realising Sasha was still loitering behind her, trying not to listen but obviously focussed on the exchange.

"It's quite simple, really." Rose stated, and did a slow circle around her. "You back off Josh, stop with the flirting, and I can finally get my chance. See how it works?"

Tamara stared at her. She was like a vulture, with her pacing. Well, even if vultures would normally fly their circles, humans don't exactly have wings, and they weren't in a desert, and, well, Tamara didn't think she was a dead animal carcass. Maybe vultures had it out for nurses as well-

"Are you even listening, Jacobs?" Rose hissed, a little bit of spit landing on Tamara's cheek. She jolted, realising she'd tuned out. Wow, she could now understood how guys did it, it was just so easy...

Fighting the urge to wipe the spit off her cheek, Tamara said in the most innocent voice possible, "Me and Josh don't flirt."

Rose snorted, and rose an eyebrow. "Oh please, all the arguments in the corridors?"

"Yes, arguments. Last I checked, that wasn't flirting."

"What about the closeness that he works with you?"

"He's my supervisor."

"Well, you do!" Rose said, and Tamara almost laughed at this grown woman's reasoning. She was what, 23? 24? The same age as Tamara, and she was treating the situation like a bad high school movie.

"Alright, Rose. I'll lay off and 'stop flirting' with Josh, but there's something you need to know. For you to want Josh, he has to want you too, so I think you're underestimating his attractiveness to you." Tamara explained, watching her face go from tan to purple.

Tamara smirked as Rose turned and walked off down the corridor. Finally. She thought if her face got any purple, there'd be grape juice coming out of her ears.

She turned to look for Sasha, and almost groaned in frustration when she heard Nathan clapping and laughing. She looked up to see him, Josh and Sasha all watching, but she concentrated on Josh's face, hoping he hadn't heard what she had said, because she had kind of in a weird way, stuck up for him.

"Well..." Sasha started, but Tamara held up a hand and halted her words.

"Don't even start."

They started walking in silence, Tamara very aware of Josh right beside her. His presence made her feel so much more aware of what she was doing, where she was, and she wished she could feel repelled by it. Unfortunately, it was the opposite way around.

"You know, after all this time, it finally makes sense." Josh said, looking like he was thinking about something hard, but the teasing smirk was on his face.

"What? That you are adopted? I'm glad you've finally seen the light." Tamara retorted, and he shoved her shoulder.

"No, you have been flirting with me, Jacobs." Tamara gasped, stopping dead in her tracks, and turned to glare at him.

"Oh, yeah, me wanting to claw out your eyes and feed them to the rats under my house is me actually covering up my flirting, Josh." Tamara said, and felt her cheeks flush anyway. Stupid body reactions.

"Don't try to deny it, love, you like me."

Tamara looked around desperately, realising she'd been ditched, yet again, except this time every nurse or doctor within miles had cleared out.

Tamara turned her face up to Josh's and put on her best angry look. "If you are that conceited and arrogant, then you really need to get your ears and eyes checked, buddy, because I despise you-"

Before she could finish, Josh pulled her in and kissed her.

For a second, neither of them did anything, Tamara frozen in shock, Josh seemingly the same. Then his hand threaded to the back of her neck and he started moving his lips against hers.

Against all of Tamara's better judgements, the little angel on her shoulder screaming 'NO!', and the moment that could interfere with her carefully made plans, she kissed him back.

One of his hands found her waist, the other stayed where it was, and Tamara felt one of her arms sliding up his shoulders as he tried to pry open her lips.

"You doctors these days." Frog eyed old man shook his head slowly as he passed them, causing a cold bucket of sense to douse Tamara's earlier flames. She jumped away from Josh, who stood in the same place, staring her down with a mocking grin on his face.

"Well, love." He started, "I despise you too."
