XIV

The rabbit thought that she was safe. She was hiding under a bush, certain that her pursuer would never find her. Nevertheless, she kept an eye out for a black-furred dog as she nibbled on a blade of grass.

Despite her best efforts, the rabbit really couldn't see much of anything. It was dark outside, meaning that the dog was surely asleep by now. After some consideration, the rabbit decided that it wouldn't hurt to get some sleep. She rolled onto her side and closed her eyes, glad to finally sleep at last.

The rabbit's nap didn't last long. She was jolted awake by loud barking. Her eyes snapped open, and she saw the dog that was chasing her earlier that day.

The rabbit was a goner.

She bounded away, but the dog was just too fast. He chased after her, still barking at maximum volume. Her legs quickly became tired, and although the rabbit wanted to stop, she forced herself to keep going. As long as blood pumped through her veins, the rabbit swore that she would keep running.

It wasn't enough. The dog came closer with every step, and by the time the dog and the rabbit left Medallion Court, she could feel his breath. At any point, the dog could reach out and devour her.

So that's what he did.

The rabbit tried to squirm away, but it was no use. The dog held her in his jaws, making it impossible for her to move. However, the rabbit didn't seem to realize that trying to escape was just a waste of energy. She continued to fight until the bitter end. One must admire the rabbit's courage, but her lack of intellect became rather obvious in moments like this.

The dog sank his teeth into the rabbit, and she fell limp. He had finally won the battle, but the dog didn't feel the need to celebrate his victory. His dear owner was waiting for him, after all.

He trotted back to the apartment with the rabbit still hanging from his mouth. Thankfully, someone had left the door open, so he simply walked into the building and sat in front of his apartment.

The dog's owner opened the door after several minutes of waiting. "Kingston!" Susan exclaimed. She crouched down next to her dog and rubbed his fur. "Don't you dare run away like that again, okay Kingston?" All of a sudden, Susan noticed the dead rabbit hanging from Kingston's mouth. "What is that?" she asked as she tore the body away from Kingston's mouth and tossed it onto the grass outside the apartment.

The dog headed into the apartment, while the rabbit lay discarded in the grass. Eventually, she would decompose and return to the earth, but for now, she was worthless.

Perhaps it was a fitting end for a rabbit whose life had never had meaning in the first place.
