The rabbit wasn't sure what all of the commotion was about. She had found a perfectly good hiding space, and although the humans had discovered her, the dog was gone. There was nothing to be worried about.
Yet, the humans were still screaming. Normally, seeing a rabbit made humans happy. She didn't understand the humans' strange reaction, but then again, the rabbit didn't understand much about those irrational creatures.
The rabbit was hungry, so she leaned over and gnawed on one of the wooden pieces that was in the box with her. The humans screamed even more, but it wasn't worth it at all. The wooden piece tasted terrible, and it only made the rabbit miss the grass and clovers that she normally ate. However, she was starving. Running away from the dog had taken up most of her energy, and there was nothing to eat in the apartment. For a moment, the rabbit wondered if she should have followed the girl that let her in up the stairs. Maybe her apartment had food in it.
The humans began to speak to each other in hushed, panicked tones. As they spoke, the rabbit looked up at the them. There were four young girls in the room. One of them was wearing a fedora, and two of the others looked exactly alike. The fourth girl leaned down and studied the rabbit. Meanwhile, the rabbit observed the girl's dark skin and bright eyes. The girl said something to her friends and reached into the box.
The rabbit tried to bounce away, but without food, she couldn't move quickly. The girl wrapped her large hands around the rabbit's empty stomach and held her tightly. She tried to reach the ground with her feet, but she was too high up. The rabbit hoped that the girl wouldn't hurt her, even though she had never known humans to do such a thing to a rabbit, at least not here. She had encountered enough trouble for one day.
The girl stood up, raising the rabbit even higher in the air. By this point, she was terrified. She had never been this high off the ground before, not even during her biggest jump. She wasn't sure how humans lived like this all the time. If she was a human, she would be scared to look down at her own feet.
The girl said something incomprehensible to one of her friends, and the girl with the fedora responded. It was at times like this when the rabbit wished that she could understand human speech, but alas, she could not, and she suspected that she often didn't want to know what humans were saying. After the girl who was holding her finished speaking to the girl with the fedora, she opened the apartment door and entered the hallway.
The rabbit began to panic. The dog could be anywhere, and what would she do then? She tried to escape, but the girl kept a firm hold on her. She then began to stroke the rabbit's fun, making her even angrier. She continued to try to squirm away, but the girl's hold on her made that impossible.
Eventually, the girl reached the doors that led out of the building. She pulled open the door and walked into the courtyard outside of Medallion Court. The rabbit's heart thumped harder, and before long, she found herself wishing that she could be back in the hallway. The dog could be anywhere, yet she had no clue what she would do when he finally came.
The girl placed the rabbit on the grass. As the girl went back into the apartment building, the rabbit tried to follow her. However, she closed the door again before the rabbit could enter, thwarting the rabbit's last attempt at finding safety.
The rabbit grazed on the clovers growing outside of the apartment building for a few moments. If there was one positive thing about her situation, it was the amount of food that was all around her. Despite her thrill at finding something to eat, the rabbit knew that the dog was out there, ready to chase her again. The thought made the rabbit shudder, but when the dog came, whenever that might be, she promised herself that she would be ready.
