Promises
Okay just to start, this story is my own adaptation of "versus the arctic". It is not super similar to the real episode so I hope you enjoy!
"Come on Ryan, it's time to say bye to mom" Mark said.
"Okay, coming." Ryan answered. The boys walked downstairs to see their happy mom gathering the rest of her stuff to leave for her one week trip to a food truck festival.
"Okay I have to leave now, but remember."
"Curfew homework kisses. Not in that order" the boys finished for her.
Grace smiled. And gave them both a quick hug, Ryan stopped her and gave her a long sad hug.
"Ry I'm only gone for a few days." She laughed.
"I know, I'll just miss you, that's all." He said sadly. All Ryan had in his mind was that this could be the last time he ever hugged his mother.
The boys headed over to the robot after Grace left. Harris and Spyder were already there. Everyone was tense, they didn't know if they were going to come back from this mission alive.
"Okay guys, I know we're all nervous, but we can do this" Ryan encouraged.
Everyone nodded and went to their stations. Ryan harnessed up and took off.... they were headed to the Arctic, to face evil in its toughest form, Traeger.
Once they were only a few miles out from their destination, Ryan landed the mech and turned around to face his team.
"Okay. I know we're all scared of facing Traeger but there is one thing on my mind that is really distracting me." He said.
"What is it?" Harris asked.
"Well as you all know, I am connected to this robot, this robot is a part of me. But you guys, you're my family, and I need to know that you'll all be safe. If...if something bad happens..." he was cut off by Mark.
"Ry come on."
"Just hear me out. Please."
"Fine."
"If something bad happens, we start to lose, or Traeger gets a lot of critical hits in and we get put in a dangerous situation, promise me that you guys will get in the elevator and evacuate." Ryan asks.
"Well of course we're not gonna stay in the robot if we'll get killed!" Spyder says, thinking he's pointing out the obvious. "We all get in the elevator and leave."
"No. What I mean is, you guys leave. I have to stay with the robot, no matter what." Ryan says.
"Ryan! I'm not gonna just leave you here alone with Traeger!" Mark shouts.
"Mark, please. I can't leave this robot and you know that. It's a part of me and so are you. I can't let anything happen to either of these things." Ryan pleads. "Please".
The three guys look at each other. They don't want to leave Ryan. Just then Mark sighs. He knows his brother won't be able to concentrate if he doesn't do this.
"Fine. I promise." Mark says reluctantly.
"I promise too" Harris says.
"I promise" Spyder says.
"Thank you guys. Now let's go kick Traeger's butt!" Ryan says happily. He has less stress now knowing that nothing will happen to his team. They wouldn't dare break a promise.
Ryan flew them all the way over to Traeger's base. Once they got there, they saw a small lab and two giant red ooze monsters. Grey and Traeger.
"Okay guys, we've never fought two monsters at once before, but there's a first time for everything!" Ryan says to the team.
"Mech Execute!"
They started fighting. It was hard enough trying to beat one red ooze monster, now he had two to deal with. The monsters were very tough. Ryan thought he saw a weak spot in Grey's monster and shouted over to Spyder.
"Spyder. Activate every single missile we have!"
"On it!" Spyder replied.
Just as Grey swiped at Ryan for an attack he jumped over top of her turned and fired all the missiles into her weak spot.
"Fire!"
The missiles hit perfectly. The monster exploded into a pile of red bubbly ooze. They cheered. They're victory was short lived though when they saw what happened next, the ooze grouped together and formed back into the monster. They were invincible, no matter how many times Ryan knocked them apart, they would always regroup and reform.
"Harris...what do we do" Ryan asked the genius.
"I don't know." Was all he got as a reply.
"Harris doesn't know! We're doomed!" Spyder shrieked.
As if the monsters had been waiting for that they lunged at Ryan making a critical hit to the weapons dispenser.
"All weapons are offline!" Mark yelled.
"Shields are down too!" Harris yelled.
Then both monsters lunged once more sending critical hits to the front and back of the robot.
"AGH...this isn't good" Ryan said between breaths.
The monsters grabbed onto both sides of the robot and started pulling. The arms came off and sparks and wires flew everywhere.
"AGHHHHHHH!" Ryan screamed. He just got his arms ripped off, he was in an unbearable amount of pain.
"Ryan!" Mark yelled. He ran down to his brother and checked on him.
"My arms...I...I can't feel them..." Ryan looked at his own arms. It was as if they weren't even there. He didn't have time to process this though as a small bomb came in through the glass of the mech. Ryan was the first to see it.
"Everyone down! NOW!"
They all did as he said just in time before it exploded sending Ryan flying to the back of the robot and the others to the ground covered in debris from the explosion.
Once the smoke cleared, Traeger walked inside of the robot examining the damage he caused. Ryan stirred and as he began to stand up, so did the others.
"Hello Mech-X4" Traeger said.
"Traeger...what...do...you want" Ryan huffed.
"Haha it's always amusing to see you in your weakest state Ryan Walker." Traeger replied.
"Get...out of my....robot." He managed to say.
"Oh now why would I do that?" Traeger asked.
"I wasn't talking to you."
Just then Ryan used whatever strength he had left to blow out the lights and grab his team and send them into the elevator. Mark protested but Ryan gave him a look that said. "You promised."
Once they were all in the elevator, Ryan turned the lights back on and just as Traeger grabbed his arm he sent the elevator flying out of the robot.
Inside, they had a surveillance view of inside the robot.
"Well wasn't that heroic of you" Traeger said. He still had ahold of Ryan's arm and flipped him backwards sending him flying onto his back. Ryan struggled but Traeger just stomped a heavy boot on his chest, squeezing the air out of him. Ryan laid there, helpless and Traeger looked at him and laughed. He grabbed Ryan by the neck before saying his final words to him.
"You are weak and pathetic. I will find your team and I will kill them. You failed Ryan Walker. It's over." He pulled a black syringe out of his pocket and stabbed Ryan in the neck. All of his veins turned black and Ryan was unconscious. Traeger left the robot, turned back into monster form and ripped the robot in half and threw it to opposite sides of the Arctic. The video feed was cut off.
The boys just stood in shock. They didn't believe what had just happened. All they knew was that they had to get to Ryan. They crash landed somewhere far away. Mark ran out of the elevator sobbing and punched a wall of snow he found. Spyder and Harris just looked at him with sad eyes.
"Mark..." Harris tried to say. Mark stopped he breathed heavily and turned around.
"What!" He snapped.
"Please...stop...you're hurting yourself." He said back.
"My brother was just murdered and I watched it!" Mark yelled. As he said these words out loud he began to sob even more. He collapsed to the ground in a puddle of tears. Harris and Spyder walked over and helped him up. Just then they heard a voice.
"Ryan may not be dead."
It came from Harris's mech link. It was Leo.
"Leo?" Harris asked.
"Yes. Listen. I know you have questions (Leo mysteriously disappeared a few weeks back) for me but right now you need to get to Ryan ASAP. I have a lab in the Arctic I'm sending you coordinates now." Just then the link cut off. It froze. Harris managed to get the coordinates though. They stared the walk over. It wasn't too far. Which they were thankful for.
Once they arrived they found an old, yet tidy, lab. It was heated. The boys ran over to a computer to try and find any heat signatures within the area.
"There! Look! It's very small but I could be him! And there is a hug mechanical area around it. That must be him!" Harris yelled happily. He copied the coordinates, but as he did, the heat signature faded.
"Where'd it go!" Mark yelled.
"It must have lost connection." Harris said.
"Does that mean-" Spyder started.
"We don't know. It could be that the signal was to weak and far or it could mean...." Harris explained. They didn't need an explication to know what he was talking about in the second option. The boys found three of Ryan's hover skateboards. They grabbed one each and rode over to their dismantled robot.
Once they got there, they were shocked at what they saw. It was only the top half of the robot, there were wires and other debris scattered all around. The head glass was shattered and then laying in the middle of it, was an unconscious Ryan.
"Ryan!" Mark yelled, running over. He turned him onto his back, and saw something horrific. The others came over as well and gasped at what was laying in front of them.
Ryan was unconscious but he had multiple bruises and he was blue from the cold. The worst part was, whatever Traeger injected into his neck, turned all of his veins black and it made the three boys sick. Harris bent over and checked for a pulse on Ryan's neck. He sighed a sigh of relief as he found one. It was weak, but it was there.
"He needs medical attention now" Harris said. The others nodded, but they were in the middle of the Arctic. Where were they supposed to go?
Just then they heard the roar of an engine. They looked outside to see the green Mark-Mobile hovering over them. Inside was Leo. He came for them. He landed the car and yelled, "get in!"
They all got into the car, Mark more carefully as he was holding his poor brother in his arms. Leo flew as fast as the car would go and back into bay city. He made it back to an identical copy of what looked like their destroyed robot, only before it was destroyed.
"Leo what is this?" Harris asked.
"It's Mech-X4 2.0. I built it using the base of mechx3, and other left over parts I found, it's the exact same as Mech-X4." Leo said. The boys smiled as Leo landed the car and they ran into Mech-X4 2.0 and got Ryan into the medbay.
Harris did a scan of Ryan and determined the following: broken arm, broken ribs, concussion, a few major wounds, minor wounds, deep tissue bruises, hypothermia and the black substance was a type of poison designed to weaken Ryan's power and body energy. He made a simple antidote that he injected into Ryan. His black veins faded but were still visible. They wouldn't disappear fully for awhile. If they had reached Ryan more than a few minutes later, he wouldn't have made it.
"So Ryan's gonna be okay?" Mark asked.
"Yea. We got to him just in time." Harris said.
Mark looked down at his baby bro and saw him wake up. Ryan looked at him and said,
"You can't get rid of me that easily" before falling back into a recovery sleep. They all laughed before leaving the room to let Ryan rest.
Mech-X4 may have been destroyed, but the team that fights for it lives to fight another day...
Phew. That was an extremely long one. 2000 words! I love this one, it is just packed with so much action. Comment if you want me to make a sequel to this where it is all about Ryan's recovery from this attack. I might make one anyways but let me know what you think!
