TWENTY ONE. good for now.

"Hello, you have reached Selena Gomez's Voicemail. I'm not here right now but you can leave me a message. I will try to get back to you as soon as possible."

Eugenia's heart sank as she tossed her phone onto the bed, the weight of the situation pressing down on her. She couldn't understand why Selena had reacted so strongly when she had asked about moving in together.

After all, they had lived together before, back when they were married. The silence between them was deafening, leaving Eugenia feeling lost and confused.

She glanced around the bedroom, her eyes landing on a photograph from their wedding day that sat on the bedside counter. The memories flooded back, reminding her of the deep connection they once shared.

She longed to be able to call Selena her wife again, to have that closeness and understanding. The need to talk about what had happened consumed Eugenia, her sadness growing with each passing moment.

She shook her head, trying to shake off the overwhelming emotions, and reached for her phone that lay discarded on the bed. With a heavy sigh, she slipped it into her pocket and made her way to the kitchen.

Sitting down at the table, Eugenia was greeted by her friend Lucy, who offered a warm smile before enveloping her in a comforting hug as Eugenia returned the embrace, finding solace in Lucy's presence. As she pulled away, tears welled up in Eugenia's eyes, threatening to spill over.

"I think she just needs some time to process everything. She'll come around and talk to you. You'll see." Lucy reassured her gently wiping her tears away with her fingers.

Eugenia's fear of being pushed away lingered in her mind, the thought of their relationship ending abruptly haunting her. She snapped her fingers, a symbol of her anxiety and uncertainty.

The mention of her absent father only added to her worries, as he had long ago abandoned her and her mother. He didn't deserve to know anything about her life now.

Lucy nodded, realizing she had unintentionally touched a sensitive topic. She didn't know what to do or how to help the couple navigate through their troubles.

With a small smile, she excused herself and retreated to her own bedroom, closing the door behind her. Alone in her room, Lucy pulled out her phone and anxiously waited for the person on the other end to answer sitting on the edge of the bed, her nerves got the best of her, knowing that the fate of Eugenia and Selena's relationship hung in the balance.

"What do you want?" The person answered upset.

                                 (———)

Selena was hard at work on the set of her hit Netflix show, "Thirteen Reasons Why," when she couldn't help but discreetly clear her throat upon hearing as a cast member stumble over a line. The actor, visibly embarrassed averted his gaze, avoiding eye contact with her.

"Alright, let's take a ten-minute breather, everyone!" Selena announced as the cast and crew quickly scattered, heading towards their trailers.

"Thank you," Dylan, one of the actors, expressed his gratitude.

"You're welcome," Selena replied, though she couldn't help but notice his halfhearted smile in return.

Nervously, began playing with her fingers, her mind wandering to the recent argument she had with her girlfriend, Eugenia. Lost in her thoughts, Selena found herself grimacing as she surveyed the set.

Suddenly, one of the actors approached her, concern etched on his face. He looked at her.

"Is something bothering you?" He asked, genuinely worried.

"I'm just stressed about the show not living up to its full potential, you know? I don't want to let the fans down," Selena lied, flashing a fake smile to mask her true emotions.

"It's going to be alright, I promise," The actor reassured her, squeezing her arm before heading off to his own trailer.

As soon as he was out of sight, Selena let out a breath she hadn't realized she was holding. Slumping down in her seat, she couldn't help but dwell on the unresolved argument with Eugenia.

Pulling out her phone, she noticed missed calls and an abundance of messages from her girlfriend. With a soft sigh, Selena decided to give Eugenia a call, however, her heart sank when there was no answer on the other end of the line.

She replayed the fight in her head, feeling terrible for ignoring Eugenia. She groaned softly and bit her lip, lost in the memory, but a flashback interrupted her thoughts.

-Flashback-

"Wait, what?" Selena asked, confused.

"I want you to move in with me again," Eugenia said.

"I can't," Selena replied.

"Why not?" Eugenia asked.

"I don't know about that," Selena said, unsure.

"My bad. I'm sorry for asking," Eugenia said sarcastically.

"Don't do that," Selena said quietly.

"Whatever, Sel," Eugenia said, frustrated.

As Eugenia stood from the bed, Selena grabbed her clothes off the floor and put them on. She looked away from Eugenia, feeling guilty for not being able to commit.

"I'm sorry. I just don't know if I'm ready for that step," Selena said, looking at Eugenia.

"Tell me one good reason why. Then I won't ask you again," Eugenia said.

Selena didn't say anything, looking down at the floor. Eugenia shook her head back and forth, feeling defeated.

"I love you," Selena said, her voice cracking.

"I love you too," Eugenia replied, smiling sadly.

As Selena walked to the door, she knew she had messed up. She opened it and stepped out, closing it behind her.

Eugenia stood up from the bed, leaning her head against the door. Selena mumbled to herself as she drove away, knowing she had to make things right.

-end.-

Selena ran her fingers through her dark hair, perplexed by her fear of moving in with Eugenia. She was aware of the potential negative consequences, and desired to address the issue in order to move forward.

Taking a sip from her water bottle, Selena swallowed and placed it on the counter of her trailer. Just as she caught her breath, her phone began to ring.

"What do you want?" She whispered angrily.

Eugenia had been staring at her phone screen for what felt like the millionth time in the past hour. She resisted the urge to reach over and grab it, nervously chewing her lip. Finally, she stood up from her chair and walked into the living room, plopping down on the couch.

The fight she had with Selena, where she didn't receive a clear answer about living together, consumed her thoughts. Curling her knees to her chest, tears welled in Eugenia's eyes.

She wiped a few tears away with her fingers, unable to shake the memory of the argument with Selena.  As she raised her eyebrow, Lucy entered the living room, talking on the phone.

"Who are you talking to, Lucy?" Eugenia asked, only to receive an eye roll in response.

"What's up with you?"  She asked again, growing annoyed.

"I'm on an important call," Lucy replied, heading back to the bedroom.

"She needs to get laid," Eugenia whispered.

"She's being stubborn. I think you need to talk to her about what happened," Lucy said on the phone to Selena.

"I-I don't know," Selena replied, biting her lip.

"I spoke to Eugenia this morning. She's afraid of messing things up again," Lucy mumbled, grimacing.

"That's how I'm feeling right now," Selena confessed, rubbing her neck.

"You have to fix things with her soon then," Lucy whispered, sitting on the bed.

"I know I have to," Selena said, hanging up.

She pocketed her phone and looked around. She made her way to an actor for help with Eugenia.

Selena approached one of the main characters of the show, gently tapping his shoulder. Dylan turned around, casually slipping his hands into his pockets and flashing a warm smile at her.

"Hey, Dylan," She greeted.

"Hey," He replied.

"I need your help with a personal matter," She said, letting out a sigh.

"What happened?" He inquired.

"I had a huge fight with my girlfriend, and I'm not sure if I'm ready to talk to her about it," She confessed.

"Perhaps you could do something romantic for her, to show her that you're sorry for the fight and that you want to make it up to her," He suggested.

"That's actually not a bad idea," Selena nodded, contemplating her next move as she made her way to her trailer.

Once inside, she retrieved her laptop and began searching for the perfect gesture. She wanted to get her girlfriend, Eugenia, something nice, but she remembered that expensive gifts weren't really her style, instead, decided to take her out, to make it up to her and apologize for the fight.

She retrieved her cell phone from her pocket and dialed her girlfriend's number. As she waited for her to answer, she absentmindedly twirled her fingers, finally, heard her girlfriend's voice on the other end.

"Hey, Selena," She said, taking a deep breath.

"I apologize for not giving you an answer the last time we spoke. I want to take you out," She stated.

"It's alright, see you," Eugenia whispered softly.

"See you later," She replied, ending the call.

Selena got up from the couch and rummaged through her closet, searching for the perfect outfit to wear. After considering a few options, she settled on a dress and put it on.

She smiled, running a hand through her hair, and grabbed her things as she left the set to drive to her apartment. Selena honked the horn, playing on her phone while she waited, and looked up to see Eugenia getting into the car.

She smiled, putting her phone into her purse and closing it, feeling her hands start to get a bit sweaty. She glanced at her outfit and smiled to herself as Eugenia got in and raised an eyebrow, looking at her.

"Hi, Lena," She said.

"I want to show you I'm sorry for not giving you an answer about us moving in together," Selena said with a small smile on her face.

"You don't have to do this, though," Eugenia whispered quietly.

"I want to. End of discussion," Selena said, driving.

Eugenia huffed, leaning into the seat and looking out of the window. Selena took her hand, flashing a smile in her direction.

Eugenia smiled back weakly. She glanced at their hands, rubbing her hand with her thumb.

"I need to ask you something important," Eugenia said.

"What is it, babe?" Selena asked, glancing at her and biting her lip softly.

"Why didn't you give me an answer when we talked about moving in together?" Eugenia asked.

"I panicked. I didn't really know what to say." Selena confessed.

"You were the one who walked away from me when I wanted to discuss things. You are the one who hasn't answered any calls or anything," Eugenia stated.

"I've been pretty busy with doing the show." Selena said.

"I felt like you've been ignoring me, though," Eugenia said.

"Well, I'm not doing that. I want this to work out," Selena said.

"I don't know about this anymore," Eugenia said softly.

"What are you saying?" Selena asked.

"Pull the car over here," Eugenia said, folding her arms across her chest.

"Wait a sec," Selena said, pulling over and looking at her.

Eugenia got out of the car, slamming the door, and walked away. Selena got out to follow her.

She kept walking and sighed. She felt Selena's hand touch her arm.

"Don't touch me," She warned, spinning around to face her.

"Please, I need time to think about this," She said.

Eugenia didn't answer thinking. She looked at her lips then her eyes.

"I-I don't know.." She said barely audible.

"I need you in my life. I know now that I want you more then ever." Selena stated.

She didn't know why she questioned her relationship with her. She has given up a lot since they met five years earlier.

"Why did you move on so fast?" Eugenia blurted covering her mouth with her hand.

"I-I didn't mean it like that, it's just.." Eugenia added trailed off.

"No, it's okay. I thought it was for the best if I moved on with my life." She said.

"I was never with Cara. She was a distraction from you." She said.

"From the divorce?" Selena asked curiously.

"I wanted to have someone there." She explained.

She pulled her close, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead. Eugenia leaned her head against her chest, finding comfort in her embrace.

She stepping back slightly and cupped her face. She looked into her eyes.

"I hate seeing you upset because of me," She admitted, her voice filled with remorse.

"Well, I'm sorry," She replied, her tone sincere.

"It's okay. You know how much I love you," She whispered softly.

"I love you too. I need to go now," She said, starting to walk away.

She watched her walk away, but made the decision to follow. Eugenia didn't mind her girlfriend trailing behind her.

Selena continued walking, her hands tucked into her pockets. She hummed a tune under her breath, rolling her eyes and letting out a small laugh.

Humming a little louder, wrapped an arm around her shoulder. Eugenia sighed, leaning into her embrace as they walked.

She moved her hand to rest on her waist, a smile gracing her lips. She glanced at her, feeling a slight blush creep onto her cheeks.

She couldn't help but reminisce about the little moments they had shared over the past few weeks. She longed for their relationship to return to how it used to be, but she wasn't sure if she was ready to take that step.

"Let's go," She whispered, leading the way back to the car.

"Sure," She nodded, getting into the car.

The drive home was filled with silence, both lost in their thoughts about the state of their relationship.

She parked the car and turned off the engine. Walking around to the passenger side, she unlocked the door for Eugenia to get out.

Standing at the front door, they both waited for someone to speak. Selena finally broke the silence.

"I'll see you tomorrow?" She asked hopefully.

"Yeah, you will," She replied, giving her a quick peck on the lips before walking into the house.

Selena drove to her own house, getting out and making her way inside. She headed to the bedroom to change into something more casual.

She heard the doorbell ring in the living room and opened the door. She gasped, seeing someone she hadn't seen in years.

"What are you doing here?!" She exclaimed.
