FIVE. second chance.

-Three months later.-

Selena's condition had significantly improved over the past three months. Friends and family had been visiting her regularly, except for Eugenia, who she decided to divorce on the very day she was admitted to the hospital.

Meanwhile, Eugenia had been spending a lot of time with Courtney at her apartment. They had been dating for two months now, and Eugenia stepped outside for a smoke break.

Back at the hospital, Selena sat up on the bed and let out a soft sigh. She rubbed her tired eyes and ran a hand through her hair.

Deep down, she couldn't deny that she missed her wife immensely, even though it was her own actions that had led to their divorce. She sighed.

She pulled out her cell phone just as Niall walked in, carrying two cups of coffee. He raised an eyebrow at her.

"What are you doing?" He said and placed the cups on the table.

"Just calling my mom to check on her," Selena lied, taking a deep breath.

"Tell her I say hi," Niall replied, unaware of the true nature of the call.

"I will," Selena said, waiting anxiously for Eugenia to pick up.

"Hello?" Eugenia's voice came through the phone.

"It's me. Can we talk when I'm released?" Selena asked, her voice filled with hope as she nervously bit her lip.

"I don't think that's a good idea right now," Eugenia replied, her tone distant.

"I need to see you," Selena whispered, her desperation evident.

"I'll see you when you get out then," Eugenia said, her voice lacking warmth.

"I love you," Selena confessed, only to be met with silence on the other end.

"I love you too," Eugenia finally responded before abruptly hanging up.

"That went well," Selena muttered, putting her phone away and leaning back on the bed.

"I have to go to a meeting with management. I'll be back soon," Niall informed her, standing up and giving her a gentle peck on the lips.

"Goodbye, sweetie," Selena said, watching him leave.

Eugenia pocketed her phone and smiled softly. She still had strong feelings for her and was determined to salvage their relationship.

Taking matters into her own hands, she grabbed her keys. She headed towards a familiar house, hoping that they could find a way back to each other.

-Few hours later.-

Selena stepped into the apartment, her mind swirling with a mix of emotions. She made her way to the living room, absentmindedly tucking her keys away.

As she sank into the softness of the couch, her mother, Mandy, appeared from the corner of her eye, heading towards the kitchen. She looked at her.

"Do you like being back?" Mandy asked, her voice filled with genuine concern.

"I don't know yet. I'm still trying to wrap my head around everything," She confessed, her words tinged with a hint of uncertainty.

Understanding the weight of her daughter's turmoil Mandy leaned back against the kitchen counter. Her eyes fixed on Selena.

"That's alright, sweetheart. Take your time. How is Niall?" She gently probed.

"I don't know. I can't help but feel like I shouldn't have betrayed Eugenia," She admitted, her voice laced with regret.

"Well, darling, you can't change the past now. All you can do is learn from it," She offered, her words filled with wisdom.

"I hated seeing the hurt in her eyes when she found out," She confessed, her voice trembling with remorse.

"It's your life, my sweet girl. Deep down, you knew she would eventually discover your affair," She reassured, her touch soothing on her arm.

"I messed up big time with her," Selena whispered, her voice filled with self-condemnation.

"You didn't ruin your entire life, my dear. You made a mistake, that's all," She said, pressing a tender kiss on Selena's forehead.

"But it's my fault. I cheated on the love of my life, and now she's leaving me," She confessed, her voice trembling with despair.

Unable to sit still, Selena rose from the couch, pacing back and forth, her mind consumed by regret. She ran a hand through her hair.

"Stay calm and relax," Mandy advised her.

"I'm sorry, Mom. I was foolish to think Niall was my soulmate. The truth is, my heart belongs to Eugenia. She's the love of my life," Selena confessed.

Eugenia stepped into the house, her heart pounding with anticipation. She had used the key she received during the wedding process, a symbol of the commitment they had made to each other.

As she made her way inside, the faint sound of a conversation reached her ears, filling her with both excitement and trepidation. A wide smile spread across Eugenia's face as she recognized the voice of Selena.

The words that escaped Selena's lips were like music to her ears, causing her to lick her lips in anticipation. Unable to contain herself any longer, Eugenia whispered.

"Do you mean that?" Her words hung in the air, causing Selena to turn around and face her.

Their eyes locked, and Eugenia's shy smile mirrored the older woman's. Selena took a step towards her estranged wife, closing the distance between them.

"Yes, I mean it. Your the love of my life, Eugenia. I regret cheating on you," She said.

Sensing the need for privacy, Mandy gracefully excused herself and retreated to the kitchen, leaving the two women alone. She looked at her.

"I couldn't believe you wanted the divorce. I wanted to work things out. It seemed like you didn't want to," She confessed, her voice filled with a mix of hurt and longing.

"I did want to work things out with you," She admitted, her voice laced with regret.

"Why did you tell me those awful things about our relationship?" She asked, her voice trembling with vulnerability.

"I wanted to make you leave me alone," Selena confessed, her voice filled with remorse.

Eugenia sank into the couch, her breath escaping her in a heavy sigh. She looked at Selena, searching for answers, but Selena avoided her gaze and room is filled with a palpable tension, a mix of regret and longing.

"You did a great job then," She said, her voice laced with sarcasm.

"I'm really sorry," She confessed, her voice barely audible.

"It's okay," She reassured, her voice filled with forgiveness.

"No, it's not okay though. I messed up," Selena admitted, her voice filled with genuine remorse.

"Why did you do it?" Eugenia blurted out, her voice filled with a mix of curiosity and hurt.

"I thought that if you left me, it would be easier to be with him. But it turned out to be one of the worst choices I've made in my love life," Selena admitted, her voice tinged with regret.

"I get it. I'm dating Courtney now," She said, her tone a mix of resignation and acceptance.

"I guess I deserve that and you don't have a lot of friends except for mine. How is it going?" Selena asked, genuinely curious yet apprehensive about the answer.

"It's not going well. I mean, she's great, but she's not you," She confessed, her voice filled with longing and a hint of sadness.

"You're making me blush," She playfully responded, her cheeks turning a rosy shade.

"You look adorable when you blush, Gomez," She teased, her voice laced with affection.

"Can I kiss you?" She blurted out, her voice barely above a whisper.

"I guess that is okay," She said.

In an instant, their lips met, and they were lost in a passionate embrace. Eugenia returned the kiss with fervor, her heart aching for the connection they once had, but their stolen moment was abruptly interrupted by a voice filled with anger.

"Don't touch my girl!" Someone yelled, causing them to pull away, their hearts pounding in their chests.

"Fuck," Selena whispered, her voice filled with a mix of frustration and fear.

She stood behind her wife, her presence a comforting shield. Exhaling softly, prepared herself for the storm that was about to come.
