Chapter 2
James Potter dropped his Invisibility Cloak, and it turned out that he wasn't alone.
"Black too? What are you two doing here?" Pitch asked, her eyebrows raising when she saw who was with Potter.
"Well, we had a suspicion that Remus wasn't going to bed early like he said, so... we followed him," Potter answered, a small trace of pride in his voice.
"Looks like we were right too. So, you guys a secret thing?" Black asked, wiggling his eyebrows suggestively. Pitch rolled her eyes.
"Sorry to burst your bubble, but no, we are not any kind of thing. Remus and I are friends," she responded, before chuckling quietly. "So you didn't trust your best mate and had to follow him, and you still guessed the reason he lied incorrectly."
Potter and Black looked a little sheepish at that last comment, glancing down at their feet. Pitch then realised something... how much had they heard between her and Remus?
"How much of my conversation with Remus did you hear?" she asked coolly, hiding the worry that she felt. The two sneaks looked at each other before answering together.
"Everything."
Pitch felt like her world had collapsed. She figured that, by morning, the entire school would know, and she would be mocked relentlessly. Hogwarts had been her only sanctuary, and now that was over.
Trying to hide the rare tears that were filling her stormy eyes, she turned and bolted out of the Library as fast as her legs could carry her. She could hear the footsteps of Black and Potter as they chased after her, but she couldn't stop; her tears had slipped past her eyelids and were now streaming down her cheeks.
At the portrait of the Fat Lady, she pushed violently past Remus, knocking him to the side.
"Pitch! What's wrong?" he shouted as the crying girl started striding up the steps to the girls' dormitory, skipping two at a time.
"Ask th-them!" she yelled back, her strained voice catching on the last syllable as she pointed at the portrait behind her, before disappearing into the girls' dormitory.
James and Sirius arrived just then, only to be confronted by their best friend.
"What did you do?" Remus asked sternly. Potter and Black explained everything to Remus, who seemed to get angrier and more upset with each sentence.
"You what?!" he roared, before stomping upstairs to the boys' dormitory without waiting for a response.
"Great, now we've upset two people," James groaned, sitting down and resting his head in his hands. After a few minutes, Sirius sat down next to him and nudged his arm.
"What, Pads..." James asked in a clipped tone. He wasn't really in the mood for conversation.
"An apology letter for Pitch," Sirius replied, handing his mate a piece of parchment. "Just read it."
James sighed, not bothering to argue, and he looked down at Sirius' untidy scrawl.
Pitch,
Sorry for upsetting you like we did, and for listening to your private conversation with Remus. It was wrong of us.
Sorry again,
Sirius Black and James Potter.
"I think it's alright... it'll do, anyway," James said after reading it. He folded the parchment into a plane and charmed it so that it would fly into the girls' dormitory, where Pitch was lying on her bed.
She'd put a Silencing Charm on her bed so nobody would hear, and for the first time in what felt like forever, she let herself cry. Her body shook with sobs as she wept into her pillow.
She felt something light land on her back and she started slightly, not expecting it. It was the paper plane. She looked at it, confused, before picking it up.
Out of curiosity, she unfolded it, and read the apology letter from Black and Potter. She sighed, wiping the stray tears from her face, and flipped the note over to the blank side, writing a short response in her own messy handwriting.
Boys,
Thank you, and don't worry about it, it's fine. Apology accepted.
Pitch
She hoped that it would be enough for them to just leave her alone. Pitch removed the Silencing Charm from her bed and charmed her puffy red eyes back to normal, before folding the parchment back into a plane.
She walked to the top of the stairs that lead to the common room, and noticed James and Sirius standing there, waiting for her. She threw the plane Muggle-style, and it flew straight into Black's forehead, making Pitch have to hide a giggle as she ran back into the dormitory.
James and Sirius read the reply together, and Sirius gave a sigh of relief.
"Well, she forgives us! No more worrying," he said with a smile, plonking down onto the couch. James smacked his friend on the back of the head hard enough to earn a cry of pain.
"Hey genius, you think Moony is going to accept this apology, or the response? He'll probably say that she just said she forgave us to get us to leave her alone," James said scathingly.
"We're going to have to show her we're sorry."
"Show her? How will we be able to show her we're sorry?! If we don't fix this with her, Moony will never forgive us!" Sirius exclaimed, looking like he wad panicking slightly. Yes, believe it or not, it seems that Sirius Black does panic.
"I have an idea," James said after a moment of silence, and he whispered his idea to Sirius. They discussed this idea long into the night, planning every detail, making it perfect. Pitch would have to forgive them now, they thought.
At breakfast the next morning, Pitch sat and picked at her bacon and French toast, not feeling very hungry for once. She was sitting next to Remus, who was still fuming after last night, and she felt partially responsible for causing an argument between him and his friends.
"Don't worry, Pitch. They'll prove that they're sorry if they want to keep me as a friend," Remus said suddenly, breaking the silence. He put his arm around the dark-haired girl and squeezed her shoulders reassuringly.
"Remus, I feel bad. I feel like I've ruined your friendship with Bla- with Sirius and James," Pitch replied, sounding completely miserable. Remus looked startled that Pitch had actually used Black and Potter's first names, but he ignored it.
"What? No, it's not your fault. You aren't ruining anything! They shouldn't have followed and eavesdropped. It's their fault" Remus said, smiling reassuringly at her.
Pitch nodded, but before she could say anything, Peeves the Poltergeist arrived and began wreaking havoc in the Great Hall. He was followed by clanking suits of armour holding a giant black banner, with huge flashing gold words on it.
WE'RE TRULY SORRY!!
Pitch and Remus smiled a little, shaking their heads, but apparently the show wasn't over yet. Peeves flew over and hovered over Remus and Pitch, dropping maroon petals on their heads and singing an absurd song.
"Pitch is sad, Lupin is mad. All because of Potter and Black, who want to say they're sorry for that!" he chanted, before blowing a loud raspberry and flying out the Great hall, the suits of armour following him.
"So are we forgiven?" someone asked behind Remus and Pitch. They turned around, and there stood Potter and Black, small sheepish smiles spread across their faces.
"Well... you didn't have to go all overboard..." Pitch replied slowly, gauging their reactions. The boys' smiles faltered, and Sirius scratched the back of his neck awkwardly.
"Oh, to hell with it. I forgive you guys," Pitch sighed, her lips spreading into a grin. Potter and Black then turned to Remus, giving him wide puppy-dog eyes.
"Fine, fine! I forgive you too!" Remus laughed, ruffling James' already messy hair. Still smiling, Pitch turned back to her food because her appetite had returned, only to be snatched up by some skinny arms.
"Hey! I was eating, there!" she exclaimedin protest, wriggling around to get free.
"Stop fighting me, and let Sirius and me give you a hug each," Potter chuckled, squeezing her tighter. His words only made Pitch struggle even more, she did not want to be hugged, especially not by those two idiots.
"Bloody hell, will you please calm down! We don't want this any more than you, but Remus insists," Potter explained, and Pitch let out a loud groan of annoyance, before giving up.
"Fine... fine..but first, you have GOT to let me go," she said reluctantly, sighing. The arms around her dropped quickly, and she turned to face both boys. Potter hugged her first, and Pitch smiled. She could almost picture Lily's jealous face. No matter how much she denied it, Pitch new full well that Lily liked James.
Next to hug her was Black. His touch seemed to send an electrical feeling down Pitch's spine, and for some reason, she felt a sense of safety in his arms. She pulled away quickly, scolding herself internally, only to find Sirius staring at her with a weird expression on his face. Almost as if he didn't want her to pull away.
"Can I go back to- Oh bloody hell!" she shouted in annoyance. She had been meaning to go back to her food, now that she was hungry again, but breakfast was over. All food and plates had vanished from the tables, and the Great Hall was slowly emptying.
"POTTER! BLACK! I AM GOING TO HEX YOU INTO OBLIVION!" Pitch screeched, running after the two boys, who were sprinting away with mischievous grins on their faces. Pitch wouldn't catch them, ans she knew it, so instead she decided to hex them.
"Rictasempra!" she shouted, shooting a tickling curse in their direction. Potter and Black doubled over, laughing uncontrollably, and she took the opportunity to punch each of them in the arm. Hard.
"You got lucky this time. Next time you make me miss a meal, I'll feed both of you to a Grindylow piece by piece," she said, laughing as well, before going off to class.
