Chaptet 14: Graduation
Darry's POV:
"Accepted," I say, along with Elizabeth.
But I can't be happy about it.
Yeah, it's great. I got into the college of my dreams, and so did my girlfriend, but even with a partial football scholarship, it's still way too expensive.
"So are you guys going?" I hear Dally ask, next to Beka, but I can't even pay attention. Everything seems like slow motion and it's painful.
"Oh course!" Beka says.
We look at Elizabeth, but she says, "Darry, are you?" I shake my head. I can't.
"It's expensive... And I have to stay and take care of my brothers. What about you?" She takes a long deep breath.
"I... I don't know." And she doesn't give me an answer.
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
It's weeks later now, and we're at graduation.
"Hey," I say, smiling at Elizabeth.
"Hey. I have to talk to you," She says to me.
She's beautiful in her cap and gown, and even more because of her smile. I've never seen her smile so big.
I put my arm around her thin waist.
"What's up, sweetie?" I ask her.
"I've made a decision," She says. I look at her and smile, like I'm excited, but in reality my heart is pounding in my chest.
What if she decides to go?
What am I going to do without her?
New York is 1,230 miles away from Tulsa. That's too far.
What's going to happen when I don't hear the sound of her beautiful, angelic voice every day?
Will I be able to do this?
"I'm going. Isn't that great?" She exclaims. I blink. Now she expects me to be happy for her? Okay yeah, that's as total lie. I am proud of her.
"That's wonderful, Elizabeth. I'm really happy for you." I swear her smile got 10 times brighter. That made the feel a little guilty.
She hugs me, kisses my cheek, and runs off yelling, "Thanks, Darry! Love you," Behind her. But now I know what I have to do. A few weeks ago I picked out a promise ring and bought it for her.
But maybe instead, I'll have to propose to her. I'd do anything to make sure she doesn't leave. I already have a plan.
The Tulsa Fair is in town this week, I'll do it there.
The rest of graduation goes by slower than ever.
They start with the principal's speeches of what great students we were and the student body about how great we were, and then they start calling us up to get our diplomas.
A few kids with A last names,
"Aimes, ,"
"Anderson, Archer, Arthurs,"
"Axel..."
and then the B names,
"Barriel,"
"Barnes,"
"Braidenson,"
"Bueller..."
and then to the C's.
"Darrel Curtis," I hear after 15 years. I hear the cheers from the audience, the entire football team, and the gang.
I smile at them before grabbing my diploma. I can't stop thinking about Elizabeth, especially when they call her up to get her diploma.
"Elizabeth Ramsey," Mr. Jones says. He shakes her hand, and she thanks him. She looks perfect.
Finally, the ceremony is over. My first stop is to go see Elizabeth, before anything else.
"So," I say, kissing her cheek.
"So," She responds. I tell her about the tickets I have, and offer to bring her to the fair.
Her response sort of surprises me, she doesn't sound very excited. She just doesn't know what I have planned.
Elizabeth's POV:
"So," Darry says, coming up to me and kissing my cheek.
"So," I respond.
"I have a few tickets. Do you want to go to the fair?" The Tulsa Fair, a place I haven't been to in years. I hadn't even thought about it in so long.
"Uh, sure," I say, but it's honestly the last place I'd ever want to go. I haven't been there since my dad died, and I didn't think I'd ever have to go back.
When we get there, we go on tons of rides, and I'm actually having fun.
When he offers to go on the Ferris wheel, a feeling of dread runs through me. I've been afraid of heights ever since the accident.
But it also felt wrong to be going on one after so long, considering the fact that my father died on one. I stare up at it, genuinely afraid.
lYou ok?" Darry asks. I nod.
"Just... A little bit afraid of heights," I admit. But honestly, I'm completely terrified of them. He puts his arm around my waist and pulls me close.
"Nothing's gonna happen, sweetie. I'll protect you," He says. For a minute, I believe him. I'm not afraid. I can do it. I feel confident.
Waiting in line, I am a little nervous, but I trust Darry enough to know that he won't let anything happen. When we get on, my heart races, but he lets me snuggle into him, making me feel a little bit better. And then we stop at the top. I do not feel better anymore.
"Darry," I whisper.
"It's ok," He says, and starts getting up. My heart pounds in my chest, and I'm trying very hard not to have a full our panic attack.
It seems the whole fair is frozen in place, and when I look down, everyone is staring up at us. Okay, what's going on?
Then I look back over at Darry, he's kneeling down in the middle of the Ferris wheel cart thing, holding out a ring.
"Elizabeth, I can't stand the thought of being without you. And now you're leaving, and I can't let that happen. So I have a question for you. Elizabeth AnneMarie Ramsey, would you do me the honor of being my wife?" He asks.
Everything is swaying. I'm really dizzy. The ground is coming closer and closer to me.
This is the end. I'm falling and I'm going to die and I didn't even to get to tell the guy of my dreams that I would marry him.
Your proposal is supposed to be one of the most important, romantic moments of your life, but this certainly isn't one to think of as a happy memory.
And then I realize, I can't even be happy about him proposing. He lied to me. I don't think I'll ever be able to forgive him, even if I do live.
"You promised you'd protect me. That you wouldn't let anything happen," I whisper, just before hitting the ground. And then, everything went black.
A/N: Yep, bet you weren't expecting that. And yep, if you're confused, the same thing happened to Elizabeth's dad, and that's how he died. So, should I kill her? Let me know!
