Chapter 8: THE FIRST DATE

Darry's POV:

"Soda, Pony, dinners ready! Come take a break from your homework," I yell.

I just got home from work a half hour ago and had time to throw together something, before getting ready for my date with Elizabeth. It was weird being the man of the house, and not having anyone to make dinner for me.

I'm so used to finishing school for the day, going straight to football practice, and then to work at the diner. After that, I would get home and dinner would be on the table and ready for me to eat. It's weird making it myself, it's something I've only done a few times in my life.

My brothers came out of their rooms and sat down at the table as I grabbed their plates and put them down. Then, I set the baked chicken in the middle of the table.

"Take whatever you want," I tell them, breaking a leg off. Pony piles his plate, but Soda just sits there.

"Soda? Don't you want to ask?" I ask. He shrugs.

"You feeling ok, little buddy?" I ask him. He shrugs again. I feel his forehead. He doesn't have a fever, but I'm a little worried.

"Whats wrong?" I ask him. He stands up.

"I'm gonna be sick!" He announces, and runs to the bathroom, hand over his mouth. After a few minutes, he's still in there, so I go to check on him. He's sitting on the floor, head dipped into the toilet, coughing and gagging. The poor kid, he didn't even have time to close the door.

"Hey," I say, quietly and sit down next to him. When we were younger and were sick, mom would sit with us and rub our backs until we were done. I did the same thing with him.

"You ok, kiddo?" I ask him when he finished. He nodded, and stands up.

"Why don't you brush your teeth and then go lie down in your room? Elizabeth is gonna be here soon, and I can't have her over with a sick kid lying on the couch."

He nods and hiccups, then drops back onto the floor, making it into the toilet just in time. I sit next to him again, rubbing his back soothingly.

Suddenly, something occurs to me.

"Soda, how many of those brownies did you eat?" I ask him.

I had made brownies last night for my date with Elizabeth, I figured I could bring them with wherever we go. He looks up for a minute.

"...All of them?" He admits. I laugh a little.

"Soda, I made those for my date!"

He sighs and says, "Sorry," very quietly.

"It's ok, kid," I say, and help him up. He brushes his teeth, and walk with him into his room.

"Call me if you need anything, ok?" I say, and tuck him in. He nods.

"Feel better," I say, and kiss his forehead.

"Now get some sleep," I tell him, and close his door. Now to get ready for my date, I think to myself.

Elizabeth's POV:

"Hey, Darry!" I say, walking into his house.

"Hi, Elizabeth. I thought I was picking you up," he says. He hugs me, and I've never felt more at home in my life.

"Yeah, but my mom was in the neighborhood and offered to take me," I explain. He nods, understanding.

"So, where are we going?" I ask, excitedly. I know what happened with his parents yesterday, he called me crying, and I had to calm him down. It was weird, I've never heard or seen a man cry, and I think it broke me. I've never felt so bad about anything.

Although I'm a little surprised he didn't cancel because of it, I've been getting more and more excited the longer I've had to wait for this moment.

I don't bring it up about his parents, I don't want to upset him.

I hope he is excited too, and it's taking his mind off of whats going on, at least a little. He looks at me with an upset smile.

"Well, um... I had this great night planned, but Soda's sick and I really want to stay home and make sure he's ok. So um, I know this is only our first date and everything, but do you want to just stay in and watch a movie?" He asks.

He sounds like he's really upset about that, but I like the idea. It makes him seem like a family man, and like he cares. I

would do the same thing if my little brother, Jack was sick, and I know my older brother, Greg has done the same, he's canceled dates before, because of me. He's 23 now, and in college.

A huge smile breaks out on my face because you know why? That actually sounds amazing. Not only have I found out what a sweet, kind caring brother he is, but most of the guys I've gone out with have wanted to go to these really fancy, expensive restaurants, and like, dancing, or something like that. I would love to have one of them to invite me to stay in and watch a movie!

"That sounds wonderful, Darry! What movie?" I ask. He looks relieved.

"What movies do you like?" He asks. I shrug.

"Whatever you want," I say, trying to be easygoing. He flips on the TV and we finally agree on a horror movie. I hate horrors, but I was thinking that maybe if I act scared, he would put his arm around me. Around 20 minutes into the movie we hear a voice.

"Darry!" It yells.

Darry pauses the movie, says, "I'll be right back," and dashes into one of the bedrooms.

"You ok, Soda?" I hear. I walk into the room, and stand in the doorway to hear whats going on. He shakes his head, moans, and holds his stomach.

"I feel sick again," he says weakly.

"C'mon, So'. Let's get you back to the bathroom," Darry says, helping his little brother out of bed.

I move out of the way so they can get through, and they walk together into another room. I go sit back on the couch, but when he's not back for five or so minutes, I go to check on them.

"He ok?" I ask Darry. He nods.

"Just a little sick. He's not contagious or anything, don't worry," he says. I wasn't worrying, I was feeling bad for the poor kid. Being sick is the worst.

"DARRY!" A voice screams from behind me. I look to see his youngest brother, Ponyboy standing there, a scared, stunned look on his face. Darry gets up.

"Whats wrong?!" He asks.

"I... I was trying to... Cook something and I kinda burned myself, and lit something on fire," Ponyboy says. I stare at him, wondering why he was cooking, and how he managed to light something on fire.

I look from Ponyboy to Darry, who's standing up, to Soda, who's still hunched over the toilet. I feel bad, so I get down next to him and rub his back in comforting circles.

"You're ok, Sodapop. You're fine," I say quietly. And soon enough he is.

He brushes his teeth and I help him back to his room. I tuck him in and he almost immediately drifts off to sleep. I go back and sit on the couch.

Darry's still in the kitchen, scolding Ponyboy. He comes out after a moment looking tired. I smile at him.

"Darry," I say.

"Elizabeth," he says back, looking into my eyes. And then I find my arms around his neck. He puts his around my waist and pulls me into his lap where we stare at each other.

He kisses me, just like he did yesterday, but yesterday seems like a lifetime ago. And this time it seems to much more passionate.

"You are so beautiful," he says, playing with my hair. I blush and soon we're in a make out session.

His lips slam on top of mine as I'm pushed down, so I'm laying down in his lap. I pull him down with me in a moment of passion.

Soon, we forget we're just on a couch. He gets down onto my neck and I make a small laugh.

"You ok?" He asks. I nod.

Yeah, just my sweet spot.... Not that I would say that out loud.

"Looks like you're having fun," a familiar voice says.

"What happened to that movie you were watching?" He says, tapping his foot. I look over and realize that the voice is Ponyboy. I sit up, and smooth my skirt down as I blush a deep shade of red.

There's nothing like having your boyfriends little brother catching you making out.

"Ponyboy! Go to bed!" Darry yells.

"I don't want to. I'm not tired," Ponyboy pouts.

"Pony, go to sleep! It's already," he looks at his watch.

"11:45." I gasp and they both look at me.

"My mom wanted me home by midnight!" I exclaim.

"Thats fine," he replies.

"We can go right now. And Ponyboy, I expect to see you ASLEEP by the time I get home," he says, picking up his keys, taking my hand and leading me out.

"I'm so sorry about all of that," he says in the car. I try not to laugh. That was seriously the best date I've ever been on, not to mention firsts.

"It's fine," I say genuinely.

"I had a lot of fun." He smiles, like he did too, when he wasn't parenting.

"This must be really hard for you," I say, after a little but of silence. He looks over at me, before realizing what I was referring too.

"Lets just say, even though it's only been a day, I finally understand why there's two parents," he says simply, and I don't pry anymore. Soon enough, we're back at my house. He gets out of the car, opens my door, and helps me out. I can't help but think what a gentleman he is.

"Thank you for a great evening," I say and he takes me in his arms again.

Now that were standing up, I have to go on my tip toes to reach his lips. I kiss his nose and he tilts my chin down so we're looking into each others eyes.

"That was the most fun I've had in... a while," he says. I lift myself up a bit more and finally find his lips. A great end to a great evening.

"Will I see you again?" He asks.

"I'm sure you will on Monday at school," I joke and walk inside with a huge smile on my face.

"Good evening, honey," My mom says when I walk inside.

"Hi, mom," I respond, walking up the stairs to my bedroom.

"Is that your boyfriend?" She asks. I feel myself blushing again.

"Yeah, he is," I say.

"I like him. He seems nice. Very handsome," she says and I agree.

I find myself smiling the rest of the night. I love getting my mom's approval, and I wish my dad was still here to give me his.

A/N: So there's their first date! What did you think?! Do you ship them?
