Chapter 16: Christmas

So this is the special Christmas chapter, a half an hour before Christmas is over (I spent 3 and a half hours writing it) and it's actually kind of boring, until the end, so I apologize. But Beka, this is your present.

Darry's POV:

"Hey, Dar, can I talk to you for a minute?" Dally asks me.

"Sure. What's up?" I ask. He looks over to my brothers and the rest of the gang, sprawled around the room, laying on the floor, on the couch or at the table.

"Let's talk outside. I don't want those dopes to hear us," He says. I nod and follow him outside.

"Something wrong?" I ask him. He shakes him head.

"Nah, I just wanted to ask you something," He says.

"Okay, shoot." I wonder what he want's to ask. Is something wrong? Does he not like New York? What could it be?

"What do you do when you really like a girl?" Well, that was not what I was expecting. Shouldn't he know what to do when he really likes a girl? I mean, before he moved, he was the biggest flirt in Tulsa! And why does he need this? Doesn't have Beka? I mean, they didn't break up or anything, they both flew back here to celebrate Christmas with the gang.

But they didn't take Elizabeth with them. Apparently she and Dally have gotten close since they moved there, but she didn't want to come with.

Hmm, maybe he wanted to make a move on her, too. I mean, he has been known to cheat.

"Who are you talking about?" I ask him, starting to worry.

"Beka. Who else?" He asks. I just shrug.

"I just... I really like her, and I want to do something special for her, since tomorrow's Christmas and everything..." His voice trails off, like he wants to say more, but he doesn't.

"Well, did you get her a present?" I ask her. It's starting to snow, and I'm getting cold. I try to rush the conversation a little bit so we can go back inside.

"Yeah, but I have an even better idea now. I'll be back, Dar. Thanks for your help!" And with that he runs away, leaving me to sit on the porch steps. I sit there for a while thinking about his relationship with Beka.

I wonder what he left in such a hurry to get, but I also wonder what Elizabeth is doing in New York on Christmas Eve night, so I mostly just focus on that.

She's probably at her new boyfriends house, siting at the table with him eating a nice dinner, talking about how much she loves him. Talking about how much she loves college, and how I'm not there to bother her anymore.

But I miss her, more than anything. She's the best girlfriend I've ever had, I was in love.

I rest my head in my hands, my leg balancing my elbows, looking at me feet.

Man, I miss Elizabeth.

Why had I been so stupid? Why had I taken her on the Ferris Wheel when she had specifically told me she's afraid of heights? And more importantly? Why had I just walked out of that hospital room when she broke up with me? Why hadn't I said anything? Why did I let her treat me that way? Why had I been such a coward? Why couldn't I have told her how in love with her I was?

I let our entire relationship go down the drain...

Or maybe I didn't.

Because after staring down at me feet for so long, I head someone whisper,

"Darry." I knew that voice better than anything, Elizabeth AnneMarie Ramsey, the love of my life. She looks more beautiful than I've ever seen her before, in a beautiful, fancy red dress, with a leather jacket unzipped over it, and leggings, ripped at the knees, under it. She looked like the perfect blend of Soc and Greaser.

(A/N: This is a real outfit. My friend and I saw it at Macy's a few weeks ago and her exact response was "This will be Darry and Elizabeth's love child").

I didn't even respond to her. Immediately, I stood up, cupped my hand over her cheek, and kissed her. She pulled away, but after a full minute.

"What are you doing here?" I ask her. She shrugs.

"I... I don't really know. I told my mom I wouldn't be visiting this year, but I felt like I had to... To come see you," She tells me.

I haven't seen her in over 6 months, since that day at the fair. I don't know whether to be happy or angry.

"I guess I've missed you. How've you been?" She asks.

"Fine," Is my response.

"Good," She nods.

"That's really good. Are... Are you seeing anyone?" She asks me. I shake my head.

"What about you?" I ask her. She shakes her head at me.

"Is something wrong, Darry?" She asks me.

"You seem... different than when I saw you last," She says.

Yeah, different. Probably because she broke my heart. But I would never say that out loud.

"I'm fine. I guess I just missed you," I tell her.

"I missed you too. Do uh... Do you think I could stay here for a few days? Until I can get back to New York? I don't have anywhere else to stay," She says. I nod.

"Yeah, of course. Why don't you come in. You must be freezing," I say, holding the door open for her. When she walks in the whole room goes silent.

"Elizabeth? What are you doing here?" Soda asks. He sounds angry. Although I never said anything to either him or Ponyboy about the breakup, they both seemed to know what happened, and how upset I was. But it doesn't really matter anymore, because she came back for me.

The next thing I know Ponyboy is asking if he can have a girl over for Christmas.

"What? Who?" I ask him. I didn't know any girls his age would actually even want to talk to him. Don't they still have cooties at 11?

"This girl I meet at school. Her name's Emily and she's real pretty and nice. I invited her to come hang out with us for Christmas," He tells me. He asked without my permission? I guess I have to say yes now. But who knows, maybe she'll be really nice.

Elizabeth's POV:

It's so nice to be back in Tulsa after those 6 long months. I really missed Darry. And I guess he missed me too because as soon as he saw me he kissed me. It was amazing, I saw stars and I immediately knew why I missed him.

I had made my decision, I'm staying in Tulsa. I won't go back to college. If Darry likes the idea, I'll stay back here with him. But for now, I'll just sit on the couch with Darry and try to be nice to his little brother.

"So Pony, you have a girl coming over tomorrow?" I ask him. He nods, staring at the Mickey Mouse Christmas special on TV.

"What's she like?" I ask. This gets his attention.

"She's not like other girls. She's special. She's got this beautiful gold-blonde hair, and perfect blue eyes that I could stare at for hours and she's nice and kind and I really like her!" He's talking a mile a minute, smiling brightly now.

Later, when it's time for bed I ask Darry where I should sleep. We both look around. Dally and Beka are sharing the couch, Steve and Two-Bit are on the floor, Johnny gets the guest room, and Pony and Soda are in their room. It's a completely full house, no room for me to stay.

"There's always my room," He says sheepishly, like it's not his first choice since I just came back.

"That's fine," I say, thinking he'll let me sleep in the bed while he's on the floor, but that's not what he means. He crawls in one end, and I crawl on the other side, as far away from him as possible, and scoot even further away. It doesn't matter, though. I wake up in his arms, they're around my waist, and mine are around his neck.

"Good morning, Sleeping Beauty," He says, smiling. He must have already been up.

"Good morning," I yawn.

"Merry Christmas!" I say after a moment. I look at the clock, 7 AM, but I can hear the guys up already, so we get up, too.

"Who's opening what first?" He asks. There's a girl sitting next to Ponyboy by the tree. That must be Emily. I didn't expect for her to get here so early.

"Good morning, everyone. Merry Christmas!" I say cheerfully. She smiles at me. She's beautiful, just like Pony described, and I'm a little bit surprised she went for a greaser like him. Not that there's anything wrong with Greasers, and Ponyboy's a good kid.

"I want to go first," Dally says. We all look at him. He hands Beka a tiny, wrapped box, and gets down on one knee just as she opens it. Beka takes it out, oblivious.

"A ring? Oh, how pretty!" She says, slipping it on.

"Beka," Dally says. She looks over at him, and her eyes widen.

"Beka, we've been dating for a while now, and I've realized something... I'm really in love with you. Will you marry me?" He asks. She nods and hugs him with tears in her eyes. I smile at my best friend, so incredibly happy for her. And so incredibly jealous.

I never gave Darry an answer. He proposed to me so long ago, and I never said yes.

After opening all of their presents, Ponyboy and Emily get another one. Beka told me that when she got here she decorated the house in mistletoe so Dally would be "more romantic". Well, she got what she wanted. And so did the little ones.

Emily stood under it for about ten minutes before Two-Bit whispered something in Pony's ear.

In response, Pony walks over to her, ears reddening darker by the second, and says, "Hey, Emily. Merry Christmas," Before placing his hand on her cheek and leaning in. The kiss only lasts a few seconds but both of them looks back at us smiling after. They may be young, but they make a perfect couple.

So to say the least, it was an eventful day.

The last thing that happened, a familiar looking girl knocked on the Curtis' door.

"Hi," She said. She was pretty, middle class with long blonde hair. And I immediately knew where I saw her. The day Darry and I got together, she congratulated me, and told me she was Soda's girlfriend. What was her name... Sandy? Well, Soda immediately welcomed her in, smiling big, and tried to make a move or two on her under the mistletoe, but she wouldn't let him.

"Soda, stop. I have to tell you something. It's important. I'm-...."

A/N: Going to stop you there and post more tomorrow!  Merry Christmas, loves! I hope you like your special chapter. It was kind of all over the place and terrible, but it is 11:40 at night. Sorry. I've been specially planning their breakup for over a month just for this chapter! Just a reminder that my two new(er) characters, Beka and Emily are my amazing friends Tobleedgrease and PonygirlCurtis722 !
I have a question for my readers: I've never really described Elizabeth's looks. What do you picture when you think/read about her? I picture almost like... Jennifer Grey's hair and face, but with a smaller nose, and Winnie Cooper (Danica McKellar) from The Wonder Year's smile. Yeah, I've thought this through. But I'm not sure if that description makes any sense though😂. Anyways, I hope you have all had a wonderful holiday and tomorrow's just as awesome!
Ps: I hope you liked my cliffhanger!
