48. mean girls don't cry

1 year later

Amber Jackson looked at herself in the mirror, she was healthy. She had put on a lot of weight but she didn't mind; she liked the way her tummy had rolls, how her thighs had thunder and how for the first time, her thighs rubbed together when she walked. She liked the way her hair looked so much healthier and thicker.

The old Amber would've probably laughed her head off if you told her that a year from where she last was, she would have an actual job, be great at school- surprisingly, gain weight and be happy with herself. She was in college now, taking business. Her mother even got herself a job, not the oldest game in the book, but a real job and eventually landed herself an apartment. Things had changed pretty much a lot when she had met her now best friend, Alexis. She made peace with Garcia and to this day, ever since they graduated high school, they still keep in touch.

It was heading towards midnight and she was lost in thought feeling nostalgic when her phone buzzed. It was a message from Alexis telling her to meet up with her at the lovers lane park at the bridge where she usually stood on top of the railings and flagged Amber down every after class when they'd plan to hang out off campus.

She smiled, without questioning got up pulling over a sweat shirt with her sweat pants and made her way down to the lovers lane park not far from her neighborhood. The spotlights were all on and the park wasn't entirely empty but the place was quiet. She looked across the park looking for a certain person when she noticed a silhouette standing on the bridges railing at the far end waving her over. She shook her head chuckling and walking towards Alexis. Just then another person ran in from the side, someone she didn't recognize, and yanked Alexis to the ground.

One moment she was there and the next she was gone.

"What the fuck!" Amber's face dropped and she yelled in shock running over to Alexis. Once she reached her she pushed the stranger who was on top of Alexis away and pulled her best friend up.

"What the fuck just happened?" Alexis said flaming red. She looked ready to attack whoever yanked her.

The stranger stood up and dusted themselves off.

"Who the fuck are you and what the fuck is your problem?" Alexis demanded walking towards the person who now she made out to be as a dude.

The boy stuttered. "Well, um. I had to stop you!"

"The fuck?" Amber said implying that he needed to keep talking.

"You guys overuse the f-word way too much," he stated out of nowhere and stared at both girls wide eyed.

Amber scoffed, "You mean the word fuck? Yes, we are fucking aware and yes we fucking overuse the fucking word, what's the fucking problem with overusing the fucking word which is the word fuck?"

Alexis put an arm in front of Amber to stop her from moving anymore near the stranger chuckling, "You're going overboard. Calm the f-" she paused, "clam down."

"She was gonna jump! Why is everyone trynna die? If I had tried to talk her down, she would've already taken the jump, I just had to tackle her." He defended himself.

"Who the hell in their right mind does that?" Alexis asked exaggerated.

"Trust me it's way better than talking them down." The boy replied.

"So you could just break my arm? Yeah okay. But seriously, I always do that! I always stand on the rails." Alexis shot back.

"Whatever. I saved your life."

"She wasn't even going to jump!" Amber scoffed.

"People don't just stand on the rails for fun, are you crazy?" He shot back.

"Yes I am." Alexis concluded raising her eyebrows.

"What the hell. You just remind me of some weird girl who did that last year; talking about how she always does that crazy stuff. If you accidentally fall, then you fall. I have no idea what you girls are on but for real, this isn't funny at all." He shook his head.

Alexis froze for a minute and looked at his eyes; like pools of honey.

"Wait what?" Alexis asked puzzled. "What kind of girl?"

The boy shrugged. "She was doing exactly what you were doing. Standing up there looking like she was about to grow wings and fly. I freaked out and tried to talk her down but turns out she's been doing-"

"Hunter?" Alexis said cutting the boy off before she could stop herself.

He looked up perplexed staring at Alexis.

"Yes that's my name. What, are you not only crazy but are you psychic too?" He said sarcastically.

"Are you Hunter or are you not a Hunter?" Amber asked suddenly after moments of being quiet.

The boy only frowned and looked weirdly at Amber. Yes she is weird I'm aware, Alexis thought.

"Yes I'm Hunter." He said sternly.

She tried not to shoot him back a petty response, "No, um. It's me. The weird girl who stood on the rail. With my bag pack. At night."

He remained silent so Alexis continued. "You know, the one you claimed to have saved but really you never saved me cause I was never going to jump."

"Nothing? Really?" She swallowed awkwardly after moments it silence.

"Akward." Amber sang and Alexis agreed.

"Okay this is getting weird, anyway bye." She hurriedly tried to pull Amber away when he laughed causing her to stop.

"Alexis. I remember. I was just trying to see if I made a really good impression and turns out I did, as did you. I'm surprised, you don't even recognize me."

Alexis smiled, "I just noticed your eyes really but a lot happens within a year and well you've changed physically. Your looks and everything. You look more...mature."

Amber coughed, "Sexier."

Alexis shot her a dirty look causing Hunter to grin.

He took a long look at Alexis, "And you look different too. More...confident."

Amber coughed again, "I want your body."

Alexis turned around and shoved Amber, "Shut up."

Hunter sighed, "Hey, last year we only met up at weirdly odd times and I never really got to talk to you a lot and I don't mean to intruded or anything but if you don't have a man and don't mind me asking, I would love to-"

"She would love to. Definitely." Amber smiled. "I'll give you her number."

Even when Amber had said yes Hunter still looked like he needed the response to he from her.

Alexis smiled. "I'd love too."

Hunter smiled and Amber mumbled a few things over while he got her number. "Anyway, I'll see you soon Alexis and-" he trailed off looking at Amber.

"Amber Jackson."

"-Amber. You both take care." He grinned and turned around walking off disappearing into the darkness beyond the spotlight.

Amber sighed smiling, "Now that," she paused for effect, "is a heaven sent beautiful chocolate man."

Alexis snorted, "A what! Chocolate man? Are you serious with me right now."

Amber nodded humming a response looking into the darkness to where hunter disappeared too. "You know I have this idea that black men and abs are like looking at a chocolate bar. So now, whenever I eat a chocolate bar, I pretend I'm eating beautiful black men abs. It turns me on."

Alexis froze and squeezed her eyes shut in embarrassment, "I will never look at chocolate the same ever again."

Amber chuckled and gave Alexis a little bump, "That's the best part idiot."

Alexis chuckled back and then her face grew serious as she turned around to look at Amber. They shared a look and then Alexis smiled softly, "I'm so proud of how much you've grown."

Amber smiled back as her eyes went glassy and she replied correctly, "How much we've grown."

Amber was right. Alexis had gone through some issues herself. She even went as far as developing an eating disorder, but she fought it. She went as far as pretending to be something she wasn't just to please people who didn't know her.

Amber gave a tight smile and hung her head, "I honestly don't know where this would've gone if I had not met you. You actually saved my life Alexis. Even if it's after five years, I will still be reminding you that the person I've become, the person that I've learned to be content with, that's because of you." A tear rolled down her cheek and she laughed softly.

Alexis felt her lips quiver and her eyes go cloudy with tears. A soft breeze swept over the night and goosebumps arose all over her body. A strand of her hair fell over her eyes and she pushed it away when a tear slid down her cheek. She spoke softly, "I didn't do any of those things. You did that yourself. All you did was meet someone who saw the good in you that you had not seen in yourself for a while. I just reminded you that you're brave enough to overcome what was happening in your life. The rest was all you. You made that decision to change and you made that decision to get yourself together. It was all you."

Amber face softened and she whimpered pulling Alexis in for a hug. "Thank you so much for everything. Thank you."

They both cried and held each other for a little while until Alexis laughed wiping away her tears, "People are going to think we're these crazy lesbian couple."

Amber returned the laughter and muttered into Alexis shoulder, "Should I start kissing you?"

They both laughed pulling apart. Their lives weren't exactly a movie, but at that moment, they felt complete. In a very odd certain way. The ending is always just another beginning.
