43. mean girls dont cry
Days went by like water. Alexis was loosing weight; a lot of it. She barely recognized herself in the mirror. Her dark melanin skin looked washed out and her hair looked crusty and dry as ever.
Her naturally puffy cheeks had gone and was replaced with slender more longer appearance making her high cheekbones prominent. Naturally, she would've been happy to see the changes happening to her, but only this time, she didn't like the person looking back at her at all.
Her ribs weren't that much prominent but when she laid down, she could feel them sticking out along with her hipbones. A part of her loved it— and the other part, well, the other part despised it.
Alexis was no longer the same person she was months ago, that, she could tell herself. Her parents— Margret and Henry— were so busy they barely asked her what was going on.
Her half siblings though —Mikey, Natalie, Sarah, Zach and Zoe— from oldest to youngest in that order, asked her if she was doing okay from time to time. They didn't understand her; not like they understood each other.
At least that's what she felt.
They all did come from the same mother and father except her. Sometimes she'd feel left out; in the middle of all those Caucasian people who were her family. Sometimes it felt rather weird. She acted differently and she'd get ashamed at times when she did.
It was Saturday—two days, forty eight hours from the day she found out about Amber. She was at home and her parents had gone out leaving her with her half brother and sisters.
"You hungry?" Natalie asked coming to sit by Alexis on the couch.
"Nope." Alexis stated, her eyes glued to the tv.
"You sure? I made Mac and cheese."
Her tummy rumbled and Alexis put her arm across it and sighed heavily. "Nats, really I'm fine."
"Okay." Her sister left her and stood back up heading to the kitchen before yelling back at her. "If you get hungry, which I know you will, I'll pack yours in the lunch box and leave it in the microwave so you can heat it up. I know you like your cheese melted."
Alexis raised her hand giving her sister a thumbs up. Natalie then sighed and headed upstairs to her room; like everyone else.
Alexis sat there really not knowing what the guy on tv was talking about because she was too busy thinking.
She thought about what happened with Amber. A lot. She cared for Amber. She wanted to help but she knew all too well that she couldn't.
She sighed heavily and stood up from the couch turning the tv off and heading into the kitchen knowing that she couldn't stay this long without food.
She heated up her Mac and cheese and stuffed her face while being seated on the kitchen floor when suddenly the front door opened and in walked her brother Zach.
"Zach?" She frowned her mouth still full with Mac and cheese. She swallowed it quickly and looked at her brother with her eyebrows raised. "I thought you were in your room."
He clenched his jaw and nodded slowly. "I was."
"Okay?" Alexis stated getting up from the kitchen floor and looking at him, waiting for an explanation.
He hung his jacket and turned around to see her with her eyebrows raised. Sighing he continued, "I jumped out from my window."
"To go where?" Alexis closed the lunch box and put it back into the microwave oven walking to Zach who was now lounging on the couch like a potato.
He sighed heavily. "Places Lex. I went places." He ran his hand through his dark brown hair.
Alexis felt like she was going to intrude if she asked anymore questions so she just stood there awkwardly without saying anything else.
After a few agonizing minutes, Zach sat up and patted the free space beside him indicating that he wanted her to take a seat so she did.
"I went to see someone." He said slowly after she sat down.
She said nothing; that alone told him to continue.
He let out a long sigh and then ran his hand through his hair, again. He only did that when he was nervous and Zach was a cocky and over confident guy; he barely got nervous.
She figured he must be going through something. She and Zach were close. They literally grew up together like twins.
She put her hand over his and squeezed it and he squeezed back. "Z, what's wrong? You can tell me."
It felt like hours before he relied. But when he did, his voice was shaky.
"Lexy, I went to see a guy. I'm gay."
