39. mean girls dont cry
Alexis was now in the girls stall with Garcia still crying. She hasn't seen someone cry so hard and it broke her.
It's like every time a tear fell, a piece of her heart broke away and Alexis has never felt so guilty in her entire life.
Yes, her mom had told Alexis that it wasn't her fault, but her mom didn't understand. Her mom didn't know that she cause me that. And now, as Alexis sat there with a crying Garcia on her lap, she realized she didn't just cause hurt for Wendy when she did those thing, she caused hurt for people who actually cared and loved Wendy.
I'm so stupid, Alexis thought to herself.
After a good long six minutes Garcia lifted her head up. Her caked face was washed away by her tears. Her eyes were swelled up and her cheeks were puffy.
She looked up at Alexis and gave a sad smile.
"It's okay." Alexis replied giving her a reassuring smile.
Okay? What an idiot, she thought to herself as soon as she said it.
Garcia just hung her head. "Why'd you do that?"
Alexis frowned. "Do what?"
"Hug me. Why'd you hug me?" She asked again.
Alexis shrugged. "I actually wasn't thinking when I did. But I don't regret it."
Garcia sniffed. "I miss her." She said slowly and Alexis' heart broke.
"I miss her so much." she whispered. "She was the only one who understood me and never judged me. She made me feel like I wasn't alone and that she was always gonna be there for me. She told me she would never leave me-" her voice cracked.
"It's okay." Alexis managed to say without her voice cracking. She knew Garcia needed to get her feelings out cause holding them in- that was worse. She knew.
A tear rolled down her cheek as she cleared her throat to talk again. "Her mom and my mom never thought we were actually best friends. They thought that just because they weren't real friends that their daughters wouldn't actually be close."
"I'm so sorry." Alexis thought was the right thing to say.
Just shut up, her mind yelled at her.
"I don't even know why I'm telling you this." Garcia scoffed. "You might as well run away now and go tell the whole school about what I just told you."
"I would never d-"
"Yeah like you would never sleep with peoples boyfriends right?" Garcia shot back and stood up. "Why did you do it Alexis? Why did you have to do it? What? Just because people say that Wendy was slut you thought it was true? She loved him and she loved him dearly. I can't even believe Derek-"
"I didn't!" Alexis cut in. "We didn't and he didn't. That's the fact. Everyone thought he did but when I tried to kiss him he pushed me back and told me he loved Wendy."
Garcia blinked. "What?"
"Yes." Alexis scoffed. "I'm not lying. I wanted to kiss him and he pushed me back. We never did anything. But of course everyone thought because Derek was a player, he just had sex with me when I said he did. Right? Isn't that title people gave him? Isn't that what everyone thinks he is?"
"You're lying I saw you guys come out of the janitors closet." Garcia shook her head. Her eyes were filling up with tears again.
"You did. Yes we came out of the janitors closet. But I fucking swear Garcia, I didn't sleep with him."
"Then why did you tell her Alexis?" She yelled. "Why did you lie!"
"I was protecting Amber!" Alexis replied desperately.
"Yeah, while you were helping another you were breaking another! You have no idea how much she cared about Derek. How much she cared about him. No idea."
"I'm sorry." Alexis whispered, tears gathering in her eyes.
"Sorry isn't going to bring her back Alexis. She's gone." Garcia whispered back. Her tears falling yet again down her cheeks. "My best friend is gone."
"I didn't say anything cause I thought Derek was gonna tell her that-"
"You think she'd believe him?"
"She loves him doesn't she. If she did then she would've believed-"
"Yeah But Wendy loves two people and that's Derek and me. I even said that I saw you two coming out of the janitors and guess who she's known for the longest time! Me Alexis. She trusted me and I gave her a-"
"It's my fault." Alexis just blurted out. She couldn't just stand there and watch another person yet again get hurt because of her actions.
"I thought he actually did something with you and when I saw you two come out of that room, I just assumed that-"
"It's not your fault Garcia." Alexis hung her head.
"Alexis, even if Derek told her he never cheated, it was me who kinda took out the trust they had that he never would do that by saying that I saw you two coming out of the janitors closet. She trusted me more that anyone-"
"But you didn't know!" Alexis cried. "Like everyone else Garcia, you didn't know. Believe me, whatever you're gonna say about me— it's never gonna be as bad as the things I tell myself every single day when I remember the things I did to her. And I'm sorry I took her away from you. I was only trynna protect Amber."
Garcia sobbed. "Oh my god."
Alexis stood there looking at her. Just then, she noticed. Alexis noticed the eye bags, the cracked lips, the sad eyes and vulnerability behind the whole facade.
Garcia sniffed and wiped her tears. "She would slap me if she saw me." She chuckled.
And Alexis knew that she was talking about Wendy.
"She would tell me that she didn't want me to worry. But I still would and then she'd figure that I would never stop so she'd try her best to be happy just because she didn't want me to be sad. Because when she's sad-"
"You're sad." Alexis finished smiling sadly.
Garcia looked up at her and smiled. "I can't take back my best friend and it'll do no good for blaming you— I'm sorry."
Alexis blinked. "What?"
Garcia scoffed and rolled her eyes. "I'm so not saying it again."
Alexis chuckled and hung her head. "I'm sorry too. For taking her away from you."
Garcia inhaled and then let out a breath. Probably the one she's been holding onto for so long. "I can't save my best friend anymore or bring her back—but you can."
