Is My Body A distraction?
Hello everyone! Today I'll be ranting about the school dress code. In case you're wondering the reason why is, because today I was thinking about wearing those off the shoulder tops, and then I realized that if I wanted to wear that I couldn't show my bra straps. I started to question why showing your bra strap is such a crime in an informal occasion like school.
As girls, we have to go the extra mile when we decide what to wear to school. I think it's unfair that we're punished for the people that cannot keep their eyes to themselves. I believe that instead of punishing us for our bodies, that the school system should instead train people to be respectful of everyone. A woman's body isn't a bad thing, and it's unfortunate that some people cannot respect our bodies and that they have to do things like catcalling. As far as our bodies being a distraction, I will not apologize for my body, that I have been given like everyone else.
I think that as a society we should not make a bra strap seem like such an explicit thing. A bra strap is something that you see, so why is it such a horrible thing? I completely understand why you would achieve to dress professionally by wearing a blazer or something of the sorts at professional places, but what I don't understand is why we have to suffer, just because some people get distracted. Why should we be the ones punished for something that we cannot control?
We have to be uncomfortable when it's hot outside, just because they can't focus? We can't wear tank tops because apparently, our shoulders are a distraction. When has someone ever said, "Your shoulders are attractive?" That doesn't even sound realistic, so what is so dangerous about revealing your shoulders? We can't wear leggings, because again we're being punished for our bodies? Can we at least be comfortable when we arrive at school or do we have to worry about being a distraction first?
Even looking at the comparison of the length of the girl's dress code and the boys dress code is absurd.
The Boys Dress code
1. Wear a t-shirt under your jersey
2. No sagging
3. No inappropriate phrases on shirts (for everyone)
A few of the girls rules
1. Your skirt and shorts must be past your middle finger
2. No headbands
3. No leggings
4. You can't show your bra straps
5. Tank tops must be as wide as three fingers
6. No rips in jeans above the knee
7. Sometimes sweatpants or yoga pants
There are many more, but my fingers would fall off before I even finish.
I'm 5'9, so I can't wear shorts to school, because the only shorts that will are considered capris. Honestly, the one about sweatpants and yoga pants is such an idiotic rule to me. If we can't wear that then what can we wear? Sweatpants are fairly baggy, so where is the distraction in that? Yoga pants are literally meant for exercising in and for comfort. What's hilarious is the fact that at my school the gym uniform shorts are actually sort of against the dress code. If they have a hard time modifying the gym uniform to fit the dress code then why should we be expected to follow some of the rules.
I'll state this again. I do understand why some of the dress code rules are there, and that the school system wants us to look half decent but many of these rules are insane.
~Sincerly, students all over the world :)
