Toasters (short) stories:

"There's no reason to be sad"
(Chapters xxx - xxx)

----֎----

They've been open for atleast three hours now and despite the place gaining somewhat of a bad reputation the last few weeks, the Toasters restaurant was quite busy today. The adults present were seated at their reserved tables, casually talking with one another while their children laughed, played and or ran around the place. Some where there for a birthday, others for a play date, the food and so on. It was kinda cute to see.

(I'm for real! You could ask one of the employers that walks by if you want..)

It almost looked like any normal restaurant, had it not been for the six+ feet tall animal robots, walking around the place.. Did I say walking? My bad, I ment, interacting with the costumers.

They where practically everywhere! At one table, children where listening intensely as a dark blue-ish-purple bunny was telling them a story, his arms moving along, not in a neutral way though.. But hey, what did you expect from a robot? The children didn't seem to mind it any ways. If their big eyes and excited grins were any indication, the bunny was doing a great job at his storytelling.

Over to another side of the restaurant, around the prize corner, two more animatronics could be found, surrounded by a small group of children -most of them were little girls, and a few adults. They were taking pictures of their children with the two animal-robots. (One a hyena, dresses in a pink skirt and some white sweather, a pink lining pattern printed on it. The other a cat, dressed in a brown(-orang-tinted) suit a white dress-shirt underneath, accompanied with a dark read tie.) They were the guitarist and lead singer of the band that always performs at the restaurant.

While the adults made the pictures, some kids got to actually feed a small bird caged inside the guitarist's stomach. (It's an adorable little bird and the children loved 'em.) A birthday boy present received a little plush from the other animatronic. Despite them having no jaw, the boy wasn't afraid and reached out for his gift with a smile.

While these two band members were offstage, it didn't mean there was no music playing in the restaurant. On the main stage, two more animatronics were found. One playing the drums while the other danced with the children, to the rhythm of it. The dancer didn't move neuteraly at all and was at least two and a half times the length of the children, he danced with, but they were not afraid.

Why would they?
You could hear laughter all around the place and everywhere you looked, children were smiling.
There was no reason to be sad.

The drummer kept playing his instrument, even as the dancing children were called to the tabe to eat their food.
Had he been human, he would have chuckled at the whines the adults got from them, but the children left the dance floor and stage none the less. With them so did the dancing animatronic, who swiftly (for an actual robot atleast) moved to another group.

Usually at this time, the drummer or, Marshmallow, the wolf-cat animatronic, would usually make his routine around the restaurant: Ask the costumers if they were having a good time, answer unanswered questions, maybe even take pictures. He would have actually started this routine, had his blue eyes not landed on a little boy, sitting alone at one of the many tables at the left side of the stage he was on. As he automatically zoomed in on the boy, a small star sticker with "birthday boy" on it, revealed he was there for his birthday! But the frown on his face indicated it hadn't been a good one so far.

Alram bells echoed inside his system, humans would have called it: "Your gut feeling" (or "pithy"), but Marshmallow was a robot, he couldn't feel anything, except for what he was programmed to feel.

(Right?)

The grey wolf stoped playing, putting his drumsticks away in the placeholder on his back for now. Standing up he walked down the stage to the boys table, said boy not noticing him untill Marshmallow was right next to him. The robot kneeled down, now on eye hight with the still seated boy, who now had moved his head up to look at him, being slightly startled out of it.

Last he heard about this place, the animatronics didn't actually come seeking kids out! Except for the one that calmed down lost children, but that was the pink hyena, not any of the other band members! They weren't programmed to do that! Yet here he was. Proven wrong.

Marshmallow's eyes shut for a second and when he opened them his jaws parted too.

"Here at Toasters, we deliver kids the happiest days of their lives! There's no reason to be sad."

His head tilted sideways slightly, his voice-box getting stuck for only a moment before he continued.
"Why - Why are you sad?"

When his jaws connected again, the boy glanced down at his hands, a little hesitant in answering. "I-... It's my birthday today, but-" the boy choked on a sob, "N-nobody showed- showed up." Biting his lower lip as tear filled eyes stared down at his hands, he clenched the fabric of his pants. He had been sitting there for 45 minutes and even though, he had kept telling himself that, someone would come, the reality is just cruel.

If alarm bells were the sound (inside the robot) before, you can scratch that image and replace them with sirens by now. The kid wasn't happy, he was crying for God's sake! The tears rolling down his now reddish cheeks, dropping onto his hands and blue pants -shorts actually, leaving darker spots on the fabric.

Marshmallow's arm shot up and he reached out with his big paw. Rufeling the boy's hair softly, making him flinch before looking up trough his now slightly messed up bangs.

"At Toasters, we deliver kids the happiest days of their lives! There is no reason to be sad."

Taking his paw away from the boy's hair and instead holding it out for him to take, "I'm Marshmallow, but just say Marsh, do you want - to hear a song?" There was a short pause in the middle of his sentence, but it wasn't that noticeable. The animatronic patiently waited for the boy. Said boy looked at him with wide eyes, while he wasn't crying his eyes out any more, they were still red(-bloodshot), the colour not suiting his green eyes well at all. He slowly lifted his own hand, placing it in the paw that was atleast two times as big as his own hand.

By doing this, he allowed the drummer to guide him off his chair to the stage. Where they reached the only instrument there: The drums! Letting go of the boy's hand, Marsh sat down on his stool, grabbing his two sticks from the holder on his back. He played a few rhythms for the boy, one more "playful" than the other. Once the boy rubbed at his eyes to rid them of the last signs of his earlier crying, Marsh signed him over. When the boy walked towards him, he handed him the sticks, he was previously using to play the durms.

"You want to play - ?"

Now the sad look dissapeared completely, the boy nodded his head, very excited and when, Marshmallow padded his paws on his lap the boy took his seat there and they played the instrument, the animatronic leaning other the child's happily shaking body. The boy's laughter filling the air.
