Chapter 12
"Listen, I need to take my car otherwise how will I come back in the evening? And you know in the evening there's a shortage of buses and cabs suddenly!" I tried to explain my point while leaning from the outside of his car's window.
"I'll pick you up in the evening!" He said looking straight.
"Wait...what?!" Did I heard right?
"Now will you get inside?" He asked impatiently
Still very much confused with his reply, I quickly got inside his car. Zooming past our house he slowed down the car a bit once we were out on the road. "What's so hurry today?" He asked looking straight.
"I don't know. Guess, it might be something regarding a new book" I shrugged, he only nodded. There was a moment of silence before I spoke, "When did you came on the bed?" I didn't dared to look at him so I kept on looking outside the window.
"After fajr"
"You don't have to sleep on the couch, it's okay!" I said.
"No, I'm fine. It's just that out of habit I went straight to the bed" he said
"It's Okay, Ashar. Guess, someone's sleeping habit hasn't changed a bit also!" I said chuckling.
"I-I am s-sorry!" He said scratching the back of his head.
"It's okay! Should I tell you a secret?" I glanced at him.
"What?" He looked at me.
"It actually brought many beautiful memories back" I said looking outside the window. For sure a blush was prominent on my cheeks while he just coughed. For the rest of the ride we both were silent. Only the occassional sound of the beeps of messages could be heard.
Stopping the car in front of my office he looked at me. "When will you be free?" He asked.
"Usually I get over by five but today seems the exception." I said going through my bag.
"Just let me know"
"Hmm...Okay, thanks. Take care!" I opened the door but he stopped me, "Laiba"
"Yes?"
"This is for you" he said handing me a small box. I raised my eyebrows at him. "You didn't ate anything and I know you'll skip eating from Canteen as well" he said and a small smile stretched across my face.
"You didn't-"
"Aren't you getting late?" He asked
I just chuckled at his question, "Bye."
~~~
Walking towards the main gate of my office, I had a huge smile on my face. Clutching the box tightly against my chest, I walked happily inside.
"Good Morning" I greeted a bit extra loudly to almost everyone present.
"A very Good Morning, Laiba" Aunt Rachael came forward and I hugged her. "Someone's in a good mood" she said caressing my face. Aunt Rachael is one of the most sweetest and cutest working lady over her. At the age of thirty nine she can give a good challenge to the young teenagers. But for me, she's like a motherly figure to me.
"In a very very good mood!" I said smiling.
"May God bless you always" she kissed my forehead.
"Why was our Boss in such a hurry?" I asked walking beside her towards the elevator.
"No idea" she just shrugged and I pressed the third floor button.
Soon enough a ding sound was heard and we both walked out randomly talking about useless things. Upon reaching my boss's cabin, I opened the door and went inside greeting my co-workers.
"Good Morning Everyone" Our boss entered his cabin as he greeted us. We all replied back before he motioned us to take our seat. "The book that you all are working on was suppose to be published next week but now it'll be published on Friday" he said looking at us.
"What?"
"We are not even halfway to it!"
"It's too early"
"We won't be able to make it"
"Why the sudden change in dates?"
"Calm down everyone but I can't do anything we had a slight problem with the dates so Friday it is. I know it'll be difficult for you all but it's not impossible, you all still have two days in your hands so make the most use of it" he gave his final saying and dismissed us.
For a minute or so we all stood outside and talked regarding our new "Surprise" and then we all went to our cabins quickly indulging in our respected work. Not even halfway to my work, I was already tired and hungry, so quickly opening the small lunch box that Ashar had given me and immediately a smile was formed on my lips. Taking a bite of my French Toast, I started typing on my Laptop, half eaten French Toast long forgotten.
Afternoon came and passed, I was so badly lost in my work that I even skipped eating Lunch. Aunt Rachael did came in my cabin and even requested me to come and eat lunch, but I just denied her politely. Going through word by word, line by line, para by para ain't easy. You can't just afford to miss anything out, one small mistake and bam you're over! And that one small mistake can just make it more difficult for the book once it is published and out for everyone.
So, to avoid last minute panic, I was being extra careful and even spending the whole day I was still not halfway to the story. So, there I was sitting on a small sofa in my cabin, legs crossed, fingers furiously erasing the errors on the Laptop. Massaging my forehead with my fingers, I again focused back to my work. By the sudden darkness enveloping around my cabin, I could say that it's already Evening but that still didn't stopped me from doing my work.
Once again, I fully focused on my work, blocking out everything. All of a sudden the door of my cabin was burst open like an explosion, before I could even react or adjust my eyes at the figure barging inside my cabin my face was already pressed against a chest or his chest. Almost immediately his right arm was encircled against my waist while his left arm was pressed against the back of my head.
I tried to squirm in his grip but his grip even tightened more. His loud and erratic heartbeat was making me uncomfortable. Why was his heart beating at such a high rate? I tried to pull myself back again but he pressed me more tightly against his chest. The way he was holding me, the way he was clutching my side and the way his heart was beating screamed only one thing, he was Scared. But for what?
He buried his face more in my hijab as he clutched my top from the sides. Silently kissing my left temple he just stayed right there. Bringing up my hand I rubbed his left forearm slowly but still his demeanor never changed.
"Ashar" I said slowly and in reply all I got was him burying his face in the crook of my neck. And then only one thing was struck in my head, with a jerk I pulled myself away from him but his arms were still encircled around my waist.
"I'm not leaving you and Shezan again" I said. Sucking in a sharp breath he just pressed my face in his chest. Not pulling my face from his chest, I made him sit down on the small sofa while I kneeled down in between his legs. Grasping my hands tightly, he brought them to his lips.
"W-why didn't you received my calls?" He asked
"You called me?" I asked him back.
"Many times..." I turned to go back to my table to check my cell but his grip tightened even more. "Ashar, I'm not going anywhere. I just need to check my cell. I'm right here right in front of you." I said. Keeping a firm eye contact with him I slowly stood up. Still not breaking my eye contact with him I took a few steps backs until I was near the table, stretching my arms, I tried to locate my cell and immediately it was in my reach.
Taking my cell in my hand, I finally broke my eye contact with him and looked at my cell. Groaning, I walked back to Ashar and knelt down again just like before but was now sitting on his lap. I yelped and tried to keep some distance but his grip tightened all the more. In an instant his face was buried in the crook of my neck while he took deep calming breaths.
Not knowing what will be the best option to calm him down, I decided to run my fingers in his hair. "I forgot that I kept my cell on silent. Constant messages and calls were disturbing me. You could have called me on my office number."
I couldn't deny the fact that it was my fault due to which Ashar was behaving like this. And, even if I didn't wanted to, I just couldn't bring myself to not hate myself for making Ashar go through something like this. If, I had the chance to rectify one mistake of my life, I would have surely chosen this one. If...
"The day I walked into our house again, was the day I promised you that I will not do such reckless thing again and no matter what I'm going to stick to it." I said softly.
The second those words were out of my mouth was the moment he was standing up. It took me a moment to realize that I was now sitting on the sofa instead of his lap. His back was turned towards me which didn't helped me at all to see his expression if he was even expressing it! Squaring his shoulders he just strode off from my cabin. Not understanding a bit also of his behaviour, I stood up and started packing up my things. It was already eight and Shezan must be waiting for me.
Almost halfway to putting my things inside when again Ashar appeared back in my cabin.
"What good have I done that God sent you again at my cabin?!" I teased him
"Cut off with your drama, I came here to pick you up and give you this" he said lifting up a paper bag.
"What's this?" I asked, confusion very much evident in my voice.
"Junks!" He said handing me the bag.
"You mean life saviour!" I said placing the bag against my heart.
He just rolled his eyes and went out again.
~~~
"So you really didn't ate anything?" He asked while driving.
Munching on my chips I looked at him and just nodded my head in a No.
"Why?" He glanced at me
"Was busy....you know my boss told us to complete the work by the day after tomorrow which was supposed to be finished by next week!" I grumbled.
"Now he looks like a boss!!" He commented and I just glared.
After reaching our house we both quickly went inside and said our Salaam together to Shezan and Nafisa. Shezan was kind of shocked to see us together. His eyes were wide open with his mouth. So this was the first time in our two years that we have come together after our work and have greeted Shezan together or should I say this happily.
His reaction was very much justified with the blush that was formed in my cheeks. I don't know if Ashar saw me blushing or not but if he have then he was doing very good to not make it more obvious. He walked ahead and sat down beside Ashar initiating a conversation with him while Nafisa just went inside the kitchen but not before winking at me. Frowning at her, I just walked towards Ashar and kissed his forehead just like I do everytime I return from work and sat down beside him, too.
After chit chatting for awhile we both went to freshen up and then we all had our dinner together. After dinner, I went to Shezan's room to check upon him like usual before returning back to Ashar's room. Upon entering I realized that he wasn't in his room so I quickly took out my sleeping tshirt and went inside the washroom to change. After brushing my teeth and washing my face I made a messy bun and walked outside only to get bumped to his chest.
I pulled myself back rubbing my nose at the same time as I looked at him.
"Why did I've to share my room with you and for once can you at least wear proper clothes? Just look at you..." He said somewhat in an irritated tone.
I squinted my eyes at him "don't tell me!!" I did a fake gasp "Are you getting provoked?" I said controlling my laughter that was about to erupt.
His eyes went from irritated to wide!!
"God, you are insane!!" He walked inside the washroom while I walked outside of the washroom when I said, "don't forget to take a cold shower, Mr.Grey Eyes!!"
"Someone kill me now!!" He shouted from inside.
"Hahaha...good night, Ashar!!!"
It's always fun to mess with him.
Still chuckling I walked towards the bed and picked up my Laptop and my writing pad. Opening the sliding double door to his attached balcony, I put my things on the coffee table. Knowing very well that I'll be working late today and I don't want to disturb him so this will be the best place for sometime. Stifling a yawn and after stretching I sat down focusing back on my work.
Sometime later amidst drooping eyes and muttering something about my work I found myself being carried away while I tried my best to bury my nose in that warm blanket which was wrapped around me while I was being tugged closer until I was fully drowned in my most favourite sound of a particular heartbeat.
