Chapter 37

When I wake up, it’s a few hours before school will start. I don’t even want to think about how many hours I wasted sleeping. But I do feel better than I have, and it gives me the time to make sure I’ve sorted through all of my memories. In my mind, everything is sorted neatly into boxes, but when I ask Sophie to look at it when she wakes up, she still can’t see any tints.
“I don’t know why it isn’t sticking. I can see everything in boxes in my head right now.” I tell her.
“I don’t know either. Maybe you can meet with Tiergan instead of going to study hall?” She suggests.
“I”ll see if he’ll let me do that.” We get ready, then leap to school.
“Lori, how are you?” Biana asks.
“Doing a lot better how about you?”
“I’m fine. Dex told us why you didn’t come to study hall.”
“Yeah. I had to take a sedative, but I did seep. How are dance preparations going?”
“It’s going well. I’m just so excited!”
“Have you talked to Tam at all? I know he might not have been the first person you wouldhave asked…”
“It’s fine. He actually came and talked to me before lunch, and he was really sweet. I don’t know why I never noticed him before.”
“Well as long as he makes you happy.”
“He does.” We walk to orientation, where the only important thing is Magnate Leto reminding us about the dance. P.E. was nothing special, but I sprint to Tiergan’s office before lunch.
“Lori? Can I help you?” He says.
“Yes, I was wondering if we could meet during study hall or something? I have a lot going on right now, and my head is kinda a mess, and I’m missing memories, so I thought maybe you could help me?”
“I can try. You said you wanted to meet during study hall?”
“Yes.”
“Alright, just come here instead of going to study hall. I’ll be waiting for you.”
“Ok, thanks!” I have to run to get to Inflicting.
“You were almost late. Prehaps you should learn to manage your time better.” Bronte says.
“Sorry, I had to talk to Tiergan.” I say, out of breath from all the running.
“You got a meeting arranged?” Sophie asks.
“Yeah. During study hall.”
“I suggest you put it out of your mind. We need to focus here.” Bronte says.
“So what are we even doing?”
“Well, I still need to compare your skills, so you’ll inflict on each other, but not at the same time.”
“Seriously?” Sophie says.
“Yes. Now who wants to go first?”
“I will.” I volunteer. “And I’ll use positive emotions.” I think of all the good times I’ve had here, and in my old universe. With Sophie, Biana, Dex, and the whole group. Soon I have enough, and I pour them onto Sophie. She smiles, but that’s all.
“Alright, I guess it’s your my turn now.” Sophie says when I stop. When she does it, I fall onto the ground laughing within seconds.
“Well, I guess we know who’s better now.” I say, rubbing a stitch in my side.
“That doesn’t make any sene though. You said that you were able to knock down an entire room full of Neverseen members while you had an ability restrictor on. Maybe it’s just a lor stronger with negative emotions?” Sophie suggests.
“Maybe.” I shrug. “So what do we do for the rest of the session?”
“I don’t know. Talk about why there’s such a noticeable difference in your inflicting abilities?” Bronte says. “I have all the data I need.”
“Maybe your inflicting is linked to why your head is such a mess?” Sophie says.
“Maybe… I’ve really been concentrating on sorting through my memories, do you think you could check them?” I ask.
“Sure.” After a minute, she opens her eyes. “I still don’t see any color on them.”
“Seriously? I was trying so hard, they should be opaque.”
“Yeah, I just don’t see any color.”
“This is all too weird. I need an ability reset, or something.”
“You should ask Tiergan about that today.”
“I will.” Why is this happening to me? A while later the chimes sound, and I head to Tiergan’s office.
“So what exactly did you want to t alk to me about?” He asks as I sit on the opposite side of his desk as him.
“I’m missing memories, and whenever I try to sort my memories into the colored boxes, Sophie can’t see that I did anything.”
“Hm. Do I have permission to enter your mind?”
“Yeah.” He leans over to put his hands on my temples and closes his eyes. A few seconds later, he pulls away.
“How do you think in that messy of a head? It looks like a mind on the verge of breaking.”
“Is that what’s going on?”
“Possibly… I’ve never seen a mind as messy as that. I couldn’t stay in it for too long. I’ll go get Sophie, since apparently she can stay in ti for longer.” He gets up, and comes back a few minutes leter with Sophie.
“So what am I looking for in your head?” She asks.
“I don’t know. Some of the color I’ve been trying to add to my memories? An explanation of what my mind even looks like? My missing memories?”
“I can show you whatt your mind looks like.” She [uts her fingers on my temples, then takes them off a fwe seconds later. She transmits an image to me, and I can see what everyone meant.
“Woah… that’s what my head looks like?” It’s a mess of cluttered memories, conflicting emotions swirling in the same places, and jumbled thoughts. It’s almost like Prentices’s head when it was broken. “But… you healed me when my mind broke. And I’m here. Why is it so bad?”
“Who knows?”
“What do I need to do to fix it?”
“Well, I would recommend sorting through your memories, but my guess is that it’s too late for that, which is why it hasn’t been staying.” Tiergan says.
“What should I do then?”
“Just keep trying with that exercise. As long as you can still think and function, we don’t need to do anything drastic.”
“Seriously? You couldn’t stay in my head for more than five seconds. This is probably why I can’t inflict properly.”
“There are problems with your inflicting?”
“Yeah. When I tried to inflict, it was way weaker than it normally is.”
“Well, hopefully you won’t come into a situation where you’ll need to inflict anytime soon.” He says after a minute. “I’ll bring this up with Mr. Forkle. Until then, you’ll have to wait.” The chimes sound, and I storm out. I’m not looking where I’m going too well, and I accidentally bump into Dex.
“Oh, sorry.” I say.
“It’s fine.” He smiles. “How’d it go?”
“Not great.” I sigh. “He said that as long as I’m functioning, we shouldn’t do anything.”
“Oof. No exercises or anything?”
“No hw just said to keep trying on the one I’ve been working on for days. It hasn’t been working.”
“Oh. Any chance you know any other telepaths you could talk to?”
“Well, I could ask Alden, or Quinlin, but I haven’t talked to either of them in a while. And I haven’t even seen Quinlin in this universe.”
“And there’s no way to guarantee that they would even be able to help you.”
“I don’t know what to do anymore.”
“I know.” He wraps his arms around me. “Let’s go home. You can come over to my house for a while.”
“Ok. I’ll hail Edaline and ask her.” After I get her permission, Sophie leaps home, and we leap to Rimeshire, where the triplets are having a snowball fight. “Do they do that every day?” I ask.
“Pretty much. It’s one of the only safe ways that they’ll stay entertained so my mom can get a break.”
“Fair enough.”
“There you are, Dex. And Lori! I made cinnacreme!” Juline says when we enter the house.
“Thanks mom.” Dex says. We joke around while we eat our cinnacreme, and we go up to his room after we’re done. “So what’s up?” He sits on his bed, and I sit next to him.
“I just… hate feeling like there’s nothing I can do. Not being able to do anything is probably why I had to leave my old universe, but I wouldn’t know because the memories are missing, and I can’t do anything about it.”
“I know. What do you think we can do to take control of the situation?”
“I don’t know. All everyone tells me is to do the same exercise, which isn’t working, and talk to someone else.”
“That’s what everyone is telling you to do. What do you think you should do?”
“Get an ability reset.”
“That you can do now. I’ll help you however I can.”
“Thanks.” I wrap my arms around him in a hug. “I don’t want to live like this.”
“We’ll find a way to fix it.”
“How?”
“I don’t know yet. But trust me, we will.”
“Thank you so much. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
“I’ll always be here.” I pull away from the hug and kiss him. That clears my head. “So what are we going to do?”
“Well we’re not going to keep wallowing in self-pity feeling like everything is hopeless.” I decide.
“That’s a good start. Pity-party is officially over. Now what?”
“I haven’t thought this far ahead.” I say, making him laugh.
“Well, what if we tell my mom about this? If enough people ask him, Mr. Forkle might be more open to letting you do one of those ability reset things.”
“Ok. We can try that.”
“Let’s go.” We walk downstairs, where Juline is trying to get something away from Lex. Even in person, I can’t tell what it is.
“IT’S MINE!” Lex screams.
“No, it’s not. Give it to me.” Juline says.
“YES IT IS. IT EVEN HAS MY NAME ON IT!” Lex seems to turn it over.
“That says Dex. He won’t like that you’re touching it.”
“I DON’T CARE WHAT HE LIKES!”
“Wait, does he have- LEX, PUT THAT DOWN RIGHT NOW!” Dex says, running over.
“Lex, I’ll give you to the count of five.” Juline says. “One… two… three… four…”
“FINE! HERE IT IS!” Lex practically throws whatever it is, but Dex catches it.
“Don’t take it again.” Juline says. “Did you need something?”
“Yeah. Lori and I wanted to talk to you about your work.” Juline gets the message.
“Lex, go tell Rex and Bex that I’m making more snow.”
“YAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAY!” Lex shouts, running off to find his siblings. Soon they’re happily entertained outside, and Juline, Dex, and I are sitting in the living room. Dex and I are on a couch, and he has an arm wrapped around my shoulders.
“What do you need?” Juline asks.
“Well, recently I’ve been having issues with my head, and my inflicting. I think the best way to fix it would be an ability reset, so I was wondering if you could ask Mr. Forkle to arrange one?” I say.
“I’m sorry that you’ve been having issues, but why don’t you just ask him? He is the head of your school.”
“Well, I only found out that my infllcting isn’t working today, and honestly, he doesn’t always take me very seriously.”
“I’ll ask him.” She sighs.
“Thank you.”
“Your welcome. I guess the triplets should come inside now, huh?”
“They can’t steal my stuff if they’re out there.” Dex points out.
“That is true. You’ll probably hear it when they come back inside.” We go back up to his room.
“What did Lex steal anyways?”
“It’s a surprise.”
“It’s not another gadget that’ll land you in detention until finals, is it?”
“No, that was a one time adventure. Master Cadence is downright evil. Do you have any idea how many times she had us peeling stimky vegatables? No htanks. I don’t know how you put up with her for an entire session.” I laugh.
“Lots and lots of patience.”
“I bet.”
“I would say she grows on you, but it hasn’t happened for me yet. So what is it?”
“A surprise. You’re not getting past me that easily.”
“Darn it.” Just then, Edaline hails me and ask me to come home.
“Well, I’ll see you tomorrow.” Dex says. I pull him in for a quick kiss.
“Bye!” I leap home. After dinner, I stay in the kitchen.
“Do you need something?” Edaline asks.
“I need to use the kitchen. I want to make ripplepuffs for Dex.”
“Aww. I’ll help you if you need it.”
“Thanks, but I’ve got ripplepuffs down. In my old universe, they were almost as good as yours.”
“Note the ‘almost’ in that sentence.”
“Grady did decide that yours were better, but I think it was rigged, since you’re his wife, and I’m just his daughter.”
“Mine were still declared winner though!” I laugh as I start pulling out ingredients. Fifteen minutes later, my ripplepuffs are in the oven, and I’m in the shower. Edaline said she would take them out when they’re finished, so I’m able to get ready for bed. I drink my bottle of lushberry juice with the sedative, and slowly drift into a dreamless sleep.

I am begging, please give me ideas for more stuff to write. I am running out of ideas. And I REALLY need to write more. Also, does anyone know where elves go on dates? Like I've done the only two ideas I have, and I don't want to just use those over and over.
