beautiful boy

“Ellie?” he asks quietly.

“Hm?” I reply.

“Do you remember seeing?” he asks.

I am quiet for a second. “Yes, I remember the sun, and how it burned my eyes. I remember how the stars formed patterns in the sky. Now all I can feel is the sun’s heat.”

Ash is quiet. I reach out and feel for my seeing-eye dog. I feel fur and rub his ears gently.

“Ash?” I ask.

“Yeah?” he says.

“Describe the room for me,” I request.

“The TV is massive,” he says. “It takes up most of the wall. The couches are leather, a black one, and they’re all soft and squishy. The coffee table is glass and its covered in magazines and coffee cups.  Chief is lying at your feet. He has golden fur; it’s really soft and thick and fluffy. He’s really muscular and his tail thumps when you pet him. His nose is wet and his eyes are bright and chocolate brown. You’re eyes are a bright shade of green and you look really comfortable in your leggings and sweatshirt. You’re hair is up in a ponytail, and there are strands escaping it. You’re the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen,” Ashton says quietly.

“Thank you,” I say quietly then realize something. “Ashton, why do you never describe yourself?”

Ashton is so quiet that I reach out to touch him, to make sure that he’s still there. When my fingers probe his arm, he pulls me to his side.

Finally he answers, “I’m afraid of what you’ll think,” he admits.

I chuckle a little at that, and run my fingers through his hair. “Ashton, I can’t see you, and I’ve never seen you, but you’re the most beautiful boy I’ve ever met.”
