27. Rabbits

After Lan QiRen left Qinghe and returned to Gusu, he didn’t make Wei WuXian go to the Library Pavilion to copy the Lan Sect’s sect rules again, but simply gave him a harsh scolding in front of everyone. Without the parts where he quoted ancient scriptures, it all boiled down to how he had never seen someone so unruly and shameless before, so please get lost, as soon and as far as possible. Please don’t go near the other pupils, and especially refrain from tainting his favorite one—Lan WangJi.

"It's already too late." said Wei Wuxian with a laugh.

"I won't make the same mistake again." said Lan Qiren.

"But Lan Zhan is already mine." said Wei Wuxian, teasing the old man.

As he scolded, Wei WuXian only grinned while listening, feeling no humiliation or anger at all. Immediately after Lan QiRen left, Wei WuXian sat down and spoke to Jiang Cheng, “Don’t you think that it’s a bit too late, telling me to get lost now? He only told me to get lost after I finished tainting his person. It’s too late!”

"You're really the same to your future self." said Jin Zixuan.

"Because he is my future self." said Wei Wuxian.

The waterborne abyss in Caiyi Town created a great deal of trouble for the GusuLan Sect. It was impossible to completely destroy it, and the Lan Sect couldn’t chase it to somewhere else like the Wen Sect did. The sect leader of the Lan Sect was in secluded meditation most of the time, so Lan QiRen used all of his energy on this matter. With the lessons becoming shorter and shorter, Wei WuXian’s time spent with his friends in the mountains became longer and longer.

"I will continue my responsibilities when we get back." said Qingheng-jun.

"That way, my sons can do whatever they want without being tied in the sect's responsibilities." he added.

"But Xichen is the sect heir." said Lan Qiren.

"He can still do whatever he wants." said Qingheng-jun.

"Then I'll stay with Wanyin." said Lan Xichen.

Today, Wei WuXian intended on going outside with a group of seven or eight people again. As they passed the Lan Sect’s Library Pavilion, he looked through the drape of magnolia branches, and he could just about see Lan WangJi sitting alone by the window.

Nie HuaiSang spoke in a puzzled tone, “Is he looking at us? That’s strange. We didn’t make too much noise, so why does he still look at us like that?”

"He's just looking at his crush." said Lan Xichen grinning at his brother.

"Oh Lan Zhan." said Wei Wuxian hugging the man.

Wei WuXian, “He’s probably thinking of how to find faults with us.”

Jiang Cheng interrupted, “Wrong. Not ‘us’, but ‘me’. I think the only person he’s watching is you.”

"My Wanyin is right." said Lan Xichen.

"How I wish I am wrong." said Jiang Cheng.

Wei WuXian, “Heh. Just let him wait. I’ll deal with him after I get back.”

Jiang Cheng, “Don’t you dislike how he’s boring and how he’s not fun? Then, you should stop teasing him. This is like pulling whiskers from a tiger’s mouth—stop looking for your own death.”

Wei WuXian replied, “No. It’s exceptionally fun, precisely because of how a living person can be so not fun.”

"You're really that interested in him?" asked Jin Zixuan.

"He always talks about him." said Jiang Cheng.

"Because my Lan Zhan interesting." said Wei Wuxian making the man blush but only his ears.

They only returned to the Cloud Recesses when the time almost reached noon. Lan WangJi sat before the desk, organizing the stack of paper which he wrote on, as heard a creaking noise coming from the window. He looked up to see someone hop inside.

Wei WuXian came up by climbing the magnolia tree outside of the Library Pavilion. His face was beaming, “Lan Zhan, I’m back! Did you miss me? Huh? Without me copying texts for these past few days?”

"He really did miss you, Wuxian." said Lan Xichen.

"You will never stop bothering him, do you?" asked Jin Zixuan.

"If he stops bothering him then how will their love story continue?" asked MianMian.

"And add to that, they look cute than we can even compare them to a rabbit." said a female cultivator with a giggle.

"We have a lot of supporters eh." said Wei Wuxian while wriggling his brows at Jin Zixuan.

Lan WangJi seemed like an old monk in a state of meditation, seeing everything as nothing. He even continued to organize the pile of books with a numb expression. Wei WuXian deliberately misinterpreted his silence, “I know, even if you don’t say it, that you definitely missed me. Or else, earlier on, why did you look at me through the window?”

"I am right, right Lan Zhan?" asked Wei Wuxian.

"Mn. Missed Wei Ying." said Lan Wangji.

The two cuddled more closer.

"Can you please stop feeding us dog foods?" asked Jin Zixuan in which Jiang Cheng agrees.

Lan WangJi immediately shot him a glance, his eyes full of silent accusations. Wei WuXian sat atop the windowsill, “Look at you, rising to the bait after just a few sentences. You’re so easy to catch. This way, you won’t be able to maintain your composure.”

Lan WangJi, “You, leave.”

Wei WuXian, “If I don’t leave, will you throw me down?”

"Will never hurt Wei Ying." said Lan Wangji.

"We are not sure about that." said Jiang Cheng.

"Why would Lan Zhan hurt me?" asked Wei Wuxian.

"Think for yourself." said Jiang Cheng.

Looking at Lan WangJi’s face, Wei WuXian suspected that if he spoke one more sentence, Lan WangJi would really abandon the small amount of selfrestraint he had left and nail him onto the window at once. Wei WuXian quickly added, “Don’t be so scary! I’m here to apologize by giving you a present.”

"I wonder what kind of present it would be." said Nie Huaisang.

"A very nuce present that Lan-er-gongzi will treasure so much." said a random female cultivator.

"Maybe a trick that might harm Lan-er-gongzi." said Su She.

"Or do you want me to harm you." said Wei Wuxian coldly.

"Why do you seems to hate my brother?" asked Jiang Yanli.

"Because they are disgusting." answered Su She.

"What did he do to you?" she asked again.

Su She was silent.

"He did nothing, right? So you have no right to hate him or call him disgusting. Didn't he save your future self from dying during the waterborne abyss scene? You're the disgusting one because you don't even know how to say thank you after that. You better shut that mouth of yours before I make you." said Jaing Yanli making everyone shivers. It is rare for her to get mad and her brothers was so proud of her that they even clap their hands together with the juniors.

Madam Yu smirked at the man's direction showing the sparks of her zidian.

Lan WangJi refused at once, without thinking twice about it, “No.”

Wei WuXian, “Are you sure?” Seeing that a guarded look leaked from Lan WangJi’s eyes, he fished out two rabbits from his arms, as if he was performing a magic trick. As he held onto them by their ears, it seemed like he was holding two round, chubby snowballs. The snowballs even kicked their legs around. He lifted them in front of Lan WangJi’s eyes, “It’s actually quite strange here. There aren’t any pheasants, but there are lots of wild rabbits. They aren’t even scared of people. What do you think? Aren’t they fat? Do you want them?”

"That was a nice gift, Wuxian." said Lan Xichen.

"Do you like it, Lan Zhan?" asked Wei Wuxian.

"Mn. My favourite." said Lan Wangji with a small smile.

"You're so beautiful, Lan Zhan." said Wei Wuxian while caressing the man's face.

"Stop it you two." Jiang Cheng suddenly said in a loud voice that shocked the two.

"You really like to ruin our moment." whined Wei Wuxian.

"Really? Didn't you do the same to me?" asked Jiang Cheng sarcastically.

"Now you're getting your revenge. You should let your brother to be happy." said Wei Wuxian with a pout.

"Whatever." Jiang Cheng scoffed making Wei Wuxian laugh so loud.

Lan WangJi stared at him indifferently.

Wei WuXian, “Fine. If you don’t want them, I’m gonna give them to other people. We aren’t having much flavors in our mouths, anyways.”

"Nooooo!" shouted the juniors while looking at Wei Wuxian with a visible fear.

Nie Huaisang and Jiang Cheng laughed at their reactions.

"You can do whatever you want a-niang but not killing the rabbits." said Lan Sizhui.

"That's a crime!" exclaimed Jingyi while holding tightly to his mother's robes.

"I am not even doing anything." said Wei Wuxian.

After he heard the last sentence, Lan WangJi spoke, “Stop.”

Wei WuXian extended his arms, “I’m not going anywhere.”

Lan WangJi, “Who are you giving them to?”

Wei WuXian answered, “I’m gonna give them to whoever’s good at roasting rabbit meat.”

"Please don't. Just don't." said Jingyi with a face that is going to cry in any moment.

"Stop scaring them. Look, my son looked traumatised." said Jiang Cheng.

"Blame that to my future self." said Wei Wuxian.

"You should really stay away from the juniors. You will only scare them." said Jiang Cheng making Wei Wuxian pouts.

Lan WangJi, “Killing is forbidden in the Cloud Recesses. It is the third rule on the Wall of Rules.”

Wei WuXian, “Fine, then. I’ll go down the mountain, kill it outside, and then bring it back to roast it. You don’t want it, anyway, so why do you care so much about it?”

"Are you scaring him?" asked Jin Zixuan.

"Of course not. If Lan Zhan doesn't want it then I will really roast it." saod Wei Wuxian.

"A-niang no!" exclaimed Sizhui.

"What's wrong with roasting rabbits? They are also foods so why am I not allowed to eat it?" asked Wei Wuxian in confusion.

"Wei Ying will not eat rabbits." said Lan Wangji in a stern voice while gripping the man's waist tightly.

"Who would want to see your beloved eating your favourite animal? That's why they doesn't want you to roast it, Wei-xiong." said Nie Huaisang.

“…” Lan WangJi spoke one word at a time, “Give. It. To. me.”

Wei WuXian grinned on the windowsill, “Now you want it? Look at you— you’re always like this.”

"I will give you more rabbits next time, Lan Zhan." saod Wei Wuxian.

"No, pets aren't allowed in Cloud Recesses." said Lan Qiren.

"But gifts are." said Qingheng-jun.

"Xiongzhang?" asked Lan Qiren in disbelief.

"Let your nephews and nephews-in-law have whatever they want." said Qingheng-jun.

Lan Qiren just stared at him in disbelief, his brother is getting soft to those troublemaker Yunmeng brothers who stole his precious neohews.

Both of these rabbits were chubby and round, appearing to two balls made of fluffy snowflakes. One had bleary eyes, and lay on its stomach, remaining motionless even after a long while. As it chewed on the lettuce, its pink mouth moved in a leisurely manner. The other one seemed as if it was actually a cricket, constantly hopping up and down. It played around with its companion, wriggling and leaping nonstop. Wei WuXian tossed over a few pieces of lettuce which he took out of nowhere. He suddenly called, “Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan!”

"Look at it, they are just like their owner." said Zizhen.

"You really picked those who represent you and Lan Wangji." said Jiang Cheng in disbelief.

"That's because I can't see a grumpy bunny." said Wei Wuxian with a grin making his brother glare at him.

"That's because jiujiu is like a cat." said Jin Ling with a laugh.

"What did you said?" asked Jiang Cheng in stern voice.

Jin Ling close his mouth instantly and refused to answer the question.

The energetic rabbit had stepped on Lan WangJi’s inkstone and left a line of black footsteps on the desk. Lan WangJi was unsure of what to do, holding a piece of paper and considering different ways to wipe it off. He didn’t want to pay Wei WuXian any attention, but hearing the exaggerated tone, he thought that there might be an issue, “What?”

Wei WuXian, “Look at how one is on top of the other… Are they…?”

Lan WangJi, “Both of these are male!”

"They are indeed like their owners." laughed Wen Rouhan.

"Nice pick, Wei-xiong." said Nie Huaisang, laughing along with Wen Rouhan.

"Shameless creatures." muttered Lan Qiren.

"Wangji will probably keep it." said Lan Xichen.

"Yes, he really did." said Jingyi.

Wei WuXian, “Male? How weird.” He lifted them by the ears, examined them, and confirmed, “They really are male. Well, then, I didn’t even finish my sentence. Why are you so stern? What were you thinking of? Now that I think about it, I was the one who caught them, and I didn’t even notice whether they are male or female, but you even looked at their…”

Lan WangJi finally threw him down the Library Pavilion.

"Wangji self restraint almost fall off, Wuxian." said Lan Xichen with a light chuckle.

"You shouldn't do that again or else he will really kill you." said Jin Zixuan.

"I doubt that." said Nie Huaisang.

"He deserved it." said Jiang Cheng.

Wei WuXian laughed while in midair,
“Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!”

With a bang, Lan WangJi slammed the window close, and stumbled back to the desk.

Lan Xichen gave a knowing look to his brother.

"Better not say it, bofu." said Sizhui.

"I won't." said Lam Xichen with a tease.

"What is it?" asked Jiang Cheng.

"Something you shouldn't know Wanyin or else you will really gett mad." said Lan Xichen.

Jiang Cheng just raise a brow at him.

As he swept a look at the messy piles of rice paper and ink pawprints on the ground, as well as the two white rabbits which rolled around while dragging pieces of lettuce leaves, he closed his eyes and covered his ears.

The clusters of quivering magnolia branches were shut outside the window. Yet, no matter how hard he resisted, he couldn’t shut out Wei WuXian’s vibrant, unrestrained laughter.

"You look so cute there, Lan Zhan." said Wei Wuxian, pinching the man's cheeks.

"How is that cute? He looks problematic." said Jiang Cheng.

"That's why he is cute." said Wei Wuxian.
