Chicks with Hits
Cassidy's POV
I skate onto the ice around the rink, warming myself up before Chicks with Sticks starts. I am in an exceptionally good mood today. I was able to trick Becca into thinking that there is a big mall sale today. Becca can't ever stay away from those for some reason. But I guess she really should've known, since I for one, would never bother noticing if there is something in the world concerning the word "mall." Once I hear that word in a conversation, I have developed the skills to tune myself out of that conversation and start thinking about things that really matter in life, like my community service project called chicks with sticks. My goal is to make enough young girls to be interested in hockey so that schools will just have to add a girls hockey team to their program.
I do a couple of crossovers just to make sure that I'm fully in the zone. It all comes naturally, as usual. Everything is turning out to be perfect today, first the Becca mall prank, and now this!
My chicks are now starting to arrive for their session. I tell them to line up, and soon when everyone has arrived, I tell them,
"Alright girls, I think that you guys have mastered all the tips and tricks that I have shown you in this class. Now we can really start playing hockey!" We actually tried doing this before, but that didn't really turn out the way I had anticipated since everyone ended up falling whenever in possession of the puck, so I made sure that they were the best players they can be before making them play a game again.
The little ones wave their sticks in the air with delight, obviously agreeing with my decision. They begin to chatter amongst themselves of the fun they would have. My youngest chick, Katie angelico skates over to me and asks me. "Coach? Do you really think I'm ready to play a real game of hockey now?"
I kneel down beside her and look into her adorable eyes. "Of course Katie. You're one of my strongest players. I'm sure you'll do amazingly." And I really am saying the truth. Katie is not only my strongest player, she is also the person who has improved the most during the course of the last couple of years.
I let everyone onto the ice and the game quickly starts. We are soon really into it and it is down to whoever scores first. Katie glides forward and snags the puck away from Lucy Tucker. But something goes wrong... She tries to slow down, but somehow she can't and she bumps into charlotte taylor. They go sprawling and legs are flying everywhere. I panicked and I rush over with my cell in my hand, just in case I need to dial for an ambulance. Katie has a cut that seems to be two and a bit inches long along the side of her face. I get sweaty and dial 911 as quick as I can get.
It turns out that not only did Katie need stitches, she also broke her leg and now needs a cast. This is all my fault. I shouldn't have let them play a real game yet. I should've made them improve more. I should have been a better coach.
I go see Katie at the hospital. She seems alright. I heave a huge sigh of relief. At least she's okay.
"Cassidy?' She asks.
"Yes?"
"I know what youre thinking. Its not your fault. You're an awesome coach." She says, still laying in bed.
"It is my fault."
"No its not. You're the best, and don't you forget it. I'm alright see?"
"I guess your right..."
I leave her to rest. Then I smile to myself at the realization that a little child just lifted my spirits up to the heavens.
