Camping with Cassidy
Becca's POV
"Cassidy," I whined. "Why are we going this far out? Should we maybe stay closer to the main campsites?"
"No way, dude." She said, hiking ahead of me farther up the dirt hill. I'm already so tired that it's hard to keep up with her. She continued, "Your mom wanted me to show you the wilderness. Let me quote her: "Rebecca should be able to experience what Mother Nature has blessed us with." So Becca, that's exactly what I'm going to show you. Because your mom didn't hire me to stay that close to a campsite when we have an entire forest to explore."
I just groaned in response, but reluctantly followed Cassidy into the trees. I glanced back at the perfectly set up campsite that was being left behind us as we walked away from it. Maybe I could sneak back while Cassidy isn't looking. But that wouldn't work anyway, because Cassidy was also my ride home, and if I decide to hide from Cassidy, I'll be stuck here forever.
We have been walking for a good half hour, and that was when Cassidy pointed out something in the distance. "There," she said, pointing to a spot near a river, a peaceful-looking area surrounded by trees to ensure privacy. "We'll stop there and set up camp."
We walked to the river, and I immediately threw my heavy camping backpack down onto the ground, so relieved to finally be able to give my back a rest. Cassidy told me, "Dude, we can't rest yet. We still have to get ready for tonight. The sun is almost setting, which means we have a lot of work to do if we want to finish setting up before the darkness comes." She took out a folded up tent from her backpack and started to work on pitching it. I watched from the side, not knowing what to do. Cassidy worked until she realized that I was just standing there. She looked at me, "Well then, I guess you can find some branches and dried bark for our fire, since I'm nearly done with the tent." She pointed to a nearby tree. "See? This tree wouldn't be too good for that, since it's still a growing tree. You have to find a dead tree, which is not too hard to find, honestly. Because live trees still have moisture in them, their wood wouldn't be good for starting a fire, which is why campers prefer using dead trees or dead branches that have fallen off. Just touch the trees and you'll know if they're alive or not."
I walked up to a birch tree and touched the bark. My hand came back wet. This is so disgusting, my inner Becca mind told me. How did Cassidy do this all the time? Well, that tree was wet, which meant that it wasn't going to give me dry wood. I went to another tree and this time, the bark on it was practically falling off. I grabbed as much of it as possible. My arms became full after a few minutes. I went back to our site to put the wood down.
"Great," Cassidy said. I noticed how she had already collected water from the river, put it into a canteen, and added some water purification tablets inside. She worked quickly, I realized, as I saw that the tent was set up, sleeping bags and all.
Later that evening, the moon was out, and the crickets were chirping. I know I should say that I was scared, but really, I wasn't.
Cassidy and I were cooking sausages as our meals by the campfire that she taught me to start. In between bites of food, I asked her, "How do you know all this stuff about camping?"
Cassidy took a large bite of her sausage, and responded with a full mouth. "My dad." She had hesitated before admitting.
"Mr. Kinkaid?"
"No." She paused. "David. My dad." She said it sadly.
"Oh," I said, feeling guilty for bringing this up. I offered her a smile to ease any pain she might be feeling. "I guess I learn new things about you everyday. Including how good you are camping. But what that really a big surprise to everyone?"
Cassidy returned a light smile. "You know, Becca? You're real good at making someone feel better, despite your past. You've really changed for the better."
I grinned more, even though her words had unintentionally just reminded me of the horrible things that I did in the past to these girls who have now become my closest friends. I was glad that Cassidy brought me on this camping trip. It showed me another side of myself.
A/N: hey!! It's been awhile since I've last update; sorry for that! But now I'm officially back on Wattpad for a bit, because I'M FINALLY DONE EXAMS AND SCHOOL!!! Yay! When does your school end, and if it already did, when did it end for you?
So now that I'm finished with school, I have some time on my hands to write some one shots for you guys. And maybe I'll work on the new mdbc fanfiction that I told you guys about a few updates ago (which I hate to admit that I didn't start yet... ;( ) But near the end of June, I'm going to be traveling so I'm not going to be around for a while to give you guys updates, since I don't know how much internet access I'm going to have while traveling. But I promise that I'll try working on tons of chapters for this fanfiction so by the time I come back, I'll have loads of things to update!
My question for you to leave in the comments is: What are your plans for the summer?
:)
Until next time, remember to vote, comment and keep on reading and writing! thx :)
