(Empirestober) Flowers
Request by Another_Author on ao3: "Jimmy (or maybe Scott) has a nightmare about the events of 3rd life and goes over to the other's kingdom to make sure they're okay, you can continue from there is you want to add a moon-lit stroll or something after that too."
(but i already did a nightmare so I'm gonna change that up a bit)
As Jimmy pushed open his door, he couldn't help but notice the note pinned to it.
"i forgive you for killing the dragon, Jimmy."
He felt a rush of emotions at seeing the elegant Elven handwriting on the note, even if he'd already read it a thousand times. Joy, excitement, love-
Why would he feel love?
but his memories didn't lie and all he could think of was serene days in a peaceful valley, the soft trickle of water in the stream-
Jimmy shook his head, trying to clear his daze. Maybe he would go for a swim, go visit his sister. Maybe she would know what was going on. Or maybe she'd just tease him, but it was worth a shot.
he could try to hide it but he couldn't escape the way his heart fluttered at the thought of him, of his friend husband? who was a ray of light in the all-encompassing darkness that was this world-
He pushed those thoughts aside, focusing on the clear blue of his sister's empire and-
blue like cyan locks waving in the wind-
the cool water surrounding him, comfortable and familiar-
those words of love and trust that used to belong to one person-
Jimmy barely even realized when he turned around, when he decided to gravitate towards the mountains. There wasn't a reason, he told himself. He wasn't worried, he told himself.
worried about fiery explosions and heartwrenching screams-
But that was just a dream, a fantasy. No, he wasn't scared. No, he wasn't afraid.
afraid of scared greenyellowred eyes and torn wings and terrified screams-
No, no, no he didn't fear it happening again. No, he didn't think it was anything more than a fairytale, a daydream. (but then why was he running towards the mountains frantically? No, he wasn't scared that he'd get to the mountains to find him dead. No! He was fine, he wouldn't be dead. Why would he be dead!?
his friend lover falling, torn away by a cruel arrow-
He was alive! It wasn't a war! He was going to be fine! There was no one who would harm him!
he wouldn't be threatened by a mad king, drenched in blood, trying to sacrifice his husband-
And no, he didn't flinch at the sight of a simple banner hanging outside the walls of Katherine's kingdom, because no he wan't afraid it would happen again-
a simple banner, the eye of a terrible storm-
He was fine! He didn't need to nearly cry at the thought of being near him again after they'd been separated-
two lovers torn apart by a meaningless war-
He arrived, gasping, in the snow, pushing through the cold, wet stuff. Why would anyone want to live up here!? So cold...
cold like the icy red eyes of a merciless killer-
"Jimmy?" an all-too-familiar voice asked worriedly, just how he'd asked it in Jimmy's past life fantasy-
that voice, kind and caring and loving-
"Hi," Jimmy said simply, aware of how awkward this was. He'd just randomly come to see him for no reason, when they had no connection in this life.
"Did you need something or did you just decide that today would be a good day to freeze yourself?" Scott chucked at that, his laughter high and happy. He was always one for teasing Jimmy.
that laughter more beautiful than birdsong-
"Um..." Jimmy stammered. At least Scott wouldn't notice anything. Jimmy was always like this. "Sorry, I'll just... be on my way."
"Not now that I have you in my clutches," Scott teased with a smirk. That manipulative little...
everyone manipulating each other, tricking them, lying, decieving-
But no. His ally husband would never manipulate Jimmy. Not when his green ice-blue eyes sparkled with mischief.
"Nooo," Jimmy fake-cried. "I will escape!"
"Nope, never," Scott replied, gripping Jimmy's wrists and pulling him up out of the snow he was lying in. Jimmy's heart raced and he felt his cheeks flush at the contact. He leaned in close and whispered in Jimmy's ear. "Would you like a gift?"
"A- gift?" Jimmy wondered, confused. What on earth had he done to deserve a spontaneous gift?
"Mhm," Scott replied with a snicker.
And from his pocket he produced a poppy.
and oh he recalled bright, sunny days in a calm green corner of the world and a shimmering blue pond with pretty stepping stones and lilypads with blossoms spread wide and bright flowers smiling in the sunshine and him, his smile infectious and so pretty and days, weeks spent alone in a secluded little place, a spark of happiness in a land long since filled with dark clouds of hopelessness-
"I-" Jimmy started. "You- do you-"
Scott blushed and dropped his voice to a whisper. "Sorry, sorry, too much, you don't want it-"
"Do you remember too?" Jimmy finally asked.
Scott froze and nearly dropped the poppy. "You remember?"
Jimmy didn't trust himself to try to speak, so he simply nodded.
Scott's face spread into a grin. "From your reaction to the flower, I assume you missed me."
"N-no!" Jimmy spluttered, but it was pointless. His hopeful smile betrayed him.
Scott tucked the poppy behind Jimmy's ear and grabbed his hands, then spread his wings and launched.
Jimmy was dragged upwards with a yelp, his wings flaring instinctively. Scott laughed with unmasked joy and Jimmy let out a chuckle.
"Now you're my fish husband," Scott said affectionately.
"And now you're my cold, rude elf," Jimmy groaned teasingly.
"You love me," Scott told him devilishly.
"I love you," Jimmy agreed, realizing how they were breathing in time to the beats of their synchronized wings.
"I love you too," Scott replied, and pulled him forward into a kiss.
And they were husbands once more, illuminated perfectly in front of the silver moon, wings spread symmetrically behind them, keeping them hovering high in the sky, together again.
Together and unabashedly in love.
Flower husbands <3
I love them so much.
