Katherine drifted into consciousness slowly, the sun warming her face and waking her gently. Blinking her eyes open, pushed herself into a sitting position, stopping when she felt a strange feeling behind her, like she had extra limbs there.
Katherine turned to look at her back as best as she could. There on her back were two small, thin, rounded wings. She fluttered them experimentally and squeaked slightly as she lifted off into the air. She stopped and fell slightly, landing with ease. She took off and landed once more, exclaiming in joy. She could fly!
She looked around at her surroundings, realizing for the first time just how big the world was. A butterfly glided by, only slightly smaller than her. The flowers grew to her height, many even bigger than she was.
"I'm a fairy!" she exclaimed excitedly, bouncing around happily.
"Oh yes, you are," an eerily familiar voice purred from out of nowhere. Katherine froze, her joy instantly smothered at ites tone, deceptively kind yet clearly underscored by a threat.
"Who are you?!" Katherine demanded, far braver than she felt.
"It's me, Katherine," From out of the shadow of a tall oak stepped a tall, slim figure. His unnaturally white hair was slicked back under the collar of his long black cloak. He wore a light white shirt under a blood-red waistcoat and black pants which matched his cloak well. In one hand he grasped a sleek black and red umbrella, the rim draped downwards in threatening teeth shape.
"Scott?" Katherine tilted her head and gaped at him. This was not the small, cute moth she remembered.
"Hi, Katherine," Scott smiled maliciously, eyes gazing hungrily at her. She hopped backwards, unnerved. But he was still Scott, right? And they were friends! Still, something in his expression was wrong.
"What happened to the moth?" Katherine asked, recoiling by the second, fighting the instinct to run, get away, now . Benefit of the doubt! He hadn't attacked her (yet ) .
"Oh, the moth's been gone ages , Katherine," Scott answered indifferently, scoffing slightly at her. He grinned, spreading his free arm wide. "I'm a vampire now."
"A... vampire," Katherine gulped. He could still be nice! Maybe this fear was just her new, skittish fairy side! Surely he wouldn't hurt her.
"Oh, don't worry, you'd be barely more than a crumb," Scott smiled, as if sensing her fear. He bared his sharp new fangs at her. They glistened with red and Katherine yelped automatically, skittering backwards away from him in fear. Her breaths came quickly and she barely resisted the overwhelming urge to fly away now . He was still Scott, right?!
"No, no, I won't eat you," he assured her. Somehow that didn't comfort her at all. "You're too... collectable."
He hissed the last word and Katherine's blood ran so cold she was worried she might freeze herself to death out of fear. "Collectable?" she asked, not sure she wanted to hear his reply.
He swiped his hand at her with his long, sharp nails outstretched and she knew he was up to nothing good. He pulled a large bottle from his inventory and Katherine shrieked, taking off and flying upwards.
Scott leaped into the air after her and grabbed at her, but she dodged out of his grasp. She began to truly panic when she realized they were on an island . She'd thought there were bridges, but Scott must have destroyed them. She couldn't fly over water- the humidity would weigh down her light wings too much.
"You can't fly away forever!" Scott giggled maniacally. "Soon it will be night- my domain."
Katherine flitted back and forth in the sky, searching for overhanging trees she could use to fly over, but there were none. She was trapped on an island she couldn't escape with a vampire who wanted to capture her.
Soon, she encountered a second problem; exhaustion. She was too small to fly for very long, and it didn't help that her body still hadn't had a chance to recover from respawning. She drifted downwards, praying Scott wouldn't notice her hide in a large, leafy tree. Hopefully, the foliage would shade her from view.
Katherine waited several minutes before allowing herself to relax slightly and stretch out. She caught her breath quietly, not noticing the movement in the shadows until it was too late.
Scott leaped at her out of nowhere, grinning wildly, and Katherine screamed, launching herself out of the trees. But this time Scott had gotten the advantage. He missed her body, but he managed to grab one of her wings and yank her towards him, tearing the membrane as he did. Pain ripped through her wing and she bit back a whimper, focusing on escape.
She kicked frantically at his hand, but he was unfazed. Desperate, she focused all her energy inwards and let it out quickly, allowing herself to glow as bright as she could. Scott yelled in shock and let her go (she could be quite the light), but the damage was done. She tried to glide away, but her wing gave out and she tumbled toward the ground, landing roughly and covering herself in dirt, too small to destroy the grass.
"You've already lost," Scott called triumphantly, dropping from the tree and landing unharmed on the ground.
Katherine glared defiantly at him. "Never."
He laughed and started after her. She turned and sprinted through the tall grass, the stalks parting to let her through. Scott was right behind her- shouldn't he be faster than her? - no! She would escape him.
She darted around a tree trunk and changed direction, leaping onto the top of a mushroom and using it as a step to lunge up onto a cluster of vines dangling from a tree. Scott grabbed at her again, his hand grasping the vine below her and making it shake violently with his weight. She scaled up to the top quickly and leapt onto the next treetop, not pausing for fear of capture.
The swish of a cloak behind her didn't stop her running. She leapt onto the next branch, landing gracefully. Her small frame made navigating the thin tree limbs much easier. She made her way across the island, round and round and round. Scott followed, seeming unfazed by the tree and navigating them easily. But he couldn't quite get her with her speed and small frame.
His laughter echoed in her ears, taunting her. You've already lost.
But no, she wouldn't give up! She raced out onto a branch extending over the water and heard the crashing sounds of the vampire behind her subside. The feeling of victory surged over her preemptively- he knew she'd made it! He was turning back!
She leaped over the water, ignoring the pain as the water wormed its way into her fragile wings. It would be worth it when she landed on the other side and escaped it. She reached out her arms towards the vine hanging on the other hand, anticipating her landing. She grabbed for it, stretching her fingers, and-
Something yanked at her inside, a deeply wrong feeling in her gut. She was wrenched through space, her very self twisting through- nothingness. It wasn't painful, but it was a deeply unnatural feeling. She couldn't see anything- it wasn't black nor colorful, she was just there , somewhere in existence. Her body was squeezed out of its proper place in the universe, then just as abruptly she was back in her proper form, the pain in her wing flaring up again.
She gasped, trying to regain her bearings. She stumbled forwards- she had to keep running - and hit something hard. She fell backwards and her back hit something as she fell, until she was slumped uncomfortably in a sitting position, wings screaming at being squished between her body and something hard.
She looked around, normal eyesight coming back to her, and gasped. She was in a glass jar, trapped , the lid corked and the space too small for her to do anything but sit or stand.
"Looks like I won," Scott's smirking face reappeared, his red eyes gleeful. "You'll make a wonderful addition to my zoo."
Katherine searched for a determined response, but she could find nothing. She had run so long, but it had all been pointless. It was over the minute he'd ripped her wing, the minute he'd marked her. Tears slipped from her eyes and Katherine curled up crying.
Their game of cat and mouse was over; the cat had caught its prey.
