A Witches' Spell (Jesskas)
"I've got them!" the brunette held up a blue spotted mushroom, giggling as he placed it carefully into the basket he was carrying.
"Not bad, young one." Ivor nodded, "Now come, we have a lot to learn before daybreak. And take care of the mushrooms, Jesse, they're quite fragile."
Jesse nodded, happily skipping over to Ivor and following him back to the house where they lived.
Ever since Ivor found Jesse in the woods five years ago, the nine year old boy had been living with the seventy-five year old alchemist.
But Jesse was different because it was clear that he wasn't a human at all. He was a witch. The type who befriended cats of every colour and the one who would experiment with Ivor's herbs and medication to create potions.
And that was normal within the lands of the Overworld, since it was a place with dragons and magic. But witches were extremely rare, and it was a wonder why Ivor even found the poor child abandoned in the woods.
Either which, the two lived together peacefully, occasionally stopping by the town to visit the stores or to trade with the locals. It was an easy life Jesse was used to.
As the sun started to rise, Jesse and Ivor approached their house, wanting to finally create that potion which Jesse has been working on for the last few days.
"It's a get-well soon potion!" Jesse had told the older man, who was surveying the simmering copper cauldron which was bubbling with strange blue liquid.
"What does it do, young one?" Ivor asked as he watched Jesse throw in some random flowers and even a bark of a tree.
"The name already tells you what it does, silly!" Jesse had laughed, stirring the half finished potion. "It helps people get better!"
Even though witches were portrayed as evil or cruel, Jesse didn't have a single evil bone in him. Maybe except when he was deprived of his usual snack of lemon chicken at the stalls.
Man, that kid can eat.
Anyway, the little boy was always caring, kind and considerate to people, even helping them whenever they needed it.
However, the only thing he lacked was confidence in himself. He was always so worried that his potions would not work.
"My mom and dad mustn't have liked me," Jesse confessed to Ivor one day as they were drinking mushroom stew.
"They threw me away.. just because I'm a witch. Maybe I need to make a potion one day which will lead me to them. And I can prove that I'm good at brewing.."
Ivor didn't know what to say at that time, since he was a listener, not a talker.
Present day Ivor watched as Jesse hopped onto the little step stool he had to peer into the cauldron.
The brunette was a little short for his age and therefore, couldn't see the contents of the cauldron.
The alchemist watched as Jesse pulled out the blue spotted mushrooms and cut them into slices, making them emit a sudden burst of lapis blue smoke.
"Aww they would make good fireworks, Ivor!" Jesse grinned as he tipped the mushrooms into the bubbling water.
"Focus on the task, young one." Ivor reminded him as he watched carefully, noting down whatever Jesse did. The kid nodded, sticking his tongue out in concentration as he carefully took out a glass vial of green liquid to tip a single drop into the cauldron.
"Okay, I just need a.. a.." Jesse looked at Ivor, who gestured for him to complete his sentence, "A.. mandrake root. Right?" he smiled, caning confidence as Ivor presented him with the plant.
"Thank you!" Jesse laughed, cutting it up as well and stirring the liquid, which was a bright purple hue.
"Since it's a good potion," Jesse looked at Ivor, "There's bound to be very little in the pot after it's finished simmering, right?"
Ivor nodded again, not saying a word. This was how Jesse had to learn anyway, if he kept talking to himself, he would soon gain more confidence and prove to everyone that he was more than just an orphan.
After an hour of stirring (the two took turns, of course) they looked into the cauldron to see that the liquid was now a pastel sunshine yellow.
"YES!" Jesse punched the air, "I think that's how it's supposed to look like! Ivor! Do you know what this means?" he asked the older man excitedly as he danced around the cauldron.
"You-" Ivor started to say when Jesse interrupted him, "I finally made a potion! All by myself!"
Ivor had to smile at the child's enthusiasm. "I'm proud of you, kid. Now time to test that potion, right?"
Jesse nodded, pulling out a small vial from his pocket and dipping it into the liquid, collecting all of the pretty potion.
Ivor and Jesse walked over to the back garden, where they were keeping a yellow and brown coloured cat.
The child held out his hands, Ivor watching as the cat immediately woke up from its nap and slowly walked over to the green eyed boy, who's eyes were glowing faintly.
"Here you go Dewey," Jesse squatted down to pet the cat, which purred and rubbed its tiny head against Jesse's outstretched hand. Carefully avoiding the collar around its neck, Jesse smoothed down the matted yellow fur to drip a bit of the yellow potion onto the injured cat's neck.
Almost immediately, there was a soft sizzling sound as the wound started to heal, making Jesse smile even wider. Dewey looked up at Jesse, totally calm as it cleaned its ears with its paws.
"I think it really works!" Jesse picked up the cat, looking at its silver name tag hung around its neck, "And your owner seems to live nearby." he told Dewey, who meowed in reply.
"Then I suppose you should give the cat back to its owner kid," Ivor nodded, "Just be back in time for lunch!"
Jesse laughed, giving Ivor a hug before heading back to the town, where Dewey's owner supposedly lived.
The child walked back to the town, passing by the town people and waving at them. They were very polite to him, since Jesse had helped them before. With the crop growing or being helpful to others, of course.
"Hi Mr Otis!" Jesse went up to the butcher, who looked down at him, "Oh hey kid," he set down his knife, "Whatcha doing here?"
Jesse wordlessly held up Dewey, who mewed at Otis as a greeting.
The man nodded, pointing to a house nearby. "That kid's been looking for his cat for ages, so I think he'd be grateful to ya." Dewey's owner seemed to live in a library?
Well, Jesse walked towards it anyway, he didn't mind the library since he loved reading spell books and studying how the world worked.
Jesse climbed up the polished wooden stairs and knocked on the oak wood, waiting for someone to answer.
The door creaked open, just in time for him to see a pair of rather entrancing blue eyes, "U-uh. Hi." Jesse bashfully held up Dewey, who meowed at the blue eyed boy with a bored expression.
"Dewey!" the boy opened the door wider and scooped the cat into his arms, laughing and cuddling the animal. "Oh thank you for bringing him back!"
Now that the boy wasn't blocked by the door, Jesse could see that he had soft blonde hair and had a little blue flower tucked behind his ear.
The brunette found that the boy looked rather cute and he seemed like a fun person to be around with.
"It's okay." Jesse replied with a smile. The blonde held out a hand, one arm still holding Dewey, "I'm Lukas. Nice to meet you!"
Jesse grinned, taking Lukas's hand.
"I'm Jesse."
Lukas beamed, checking Dewey as he smoothed out her fluffy yellow fur, "Oh, did you take her to the vet? Her wound's gone. You see, she accidentally scratched herself on that fence at the edge of the town, and I couldn't find a way to heal her.. but anyway, did you bring her there?"
Jesse shook his head, "I healed her." he told Lukas proudly, taking out his bottle of yellow potion.
"Oooh!" Lukas glanced at Jesse's eyes, clapping excitedly, "You're a witch? That's so cool!"
Jesse blushed a little at that compliment but nodded anyway, "Thank you."
"Look," Lukas interrupted, "I have to thank you some way, right?" he gestured for Jesse to enter the library, "Just come in and we can have a talk! I'd love to know more about you."
Jesse stepped into the library, looking around at the wide assortment of books and..
"Are those spell books?" Jesse asked, pointing to a whole shelf full of old, leather bound books.
"Yep!" Lukas petted Dewey as Jesse went over to the shelf, gazing at the centuries old books. "Can I.. borrow one?" The brunette asked excitedly, "Maybe it has a spell I'm looking for."
Lukas shrugged, "Sure. It's the least I can-."
Jesse tackled Lukas into a hug, laughing, "Oh thank you, Lukas! I think I can finally find my parents with this." he held the blonde by the elbows, making him accidentally drop the cat onto the floor. Dewey landed on her four paws anyway.
The two kids stared at each other, smiling so hard, Jesse's cheeks felt a little painful. So he rubbed them, laughing. "Sorry, I guess I'm really pleased to meet you."
Lukas grinned, a faint blush on his cheeks as he pushed the book towards Jesse, "Like I said, it's the least I can do.."
