Chapter One
Connor's POV
My eyes shot open and I rolled over to sob into the pillow. That hell dream. Although it happened every night, I could never get used to it. I tried to breathe along with the soft sound of Kevin's breathing. Slow, steady. The clock read 2:36.
Kevin didn't have the hell dream. I never understood why. Was I just so messed up that Heavenly Father decided to screw me over? I mean, he had it that one time in Uganda and the first time we slept together, but not since. I couldn't go back to sleep. I started making another math test for my seventh graders. Kevin woke up around 5:30 and went to make breakfast, but I couldn't let him cook for the second day in a row. No matter how much I loved the man, his cooking skills were nonexistent.
"Kevin, no, you made it yesterday. Let me make it today." He nodded at me and sat at the table. I felt fine now that I was awake with him.
Naomi's POV
My clock said that it was 2:36. What was that terrifying dream? Why did it feel so nice to kiss Mani? I knew I felt weird around her, but...oh no. No. I couldn't like her, like her. My parents would kill me. They were the most religious people I knew. I mean, Mr. Price was pretty religious. He was Mormon too; he sometimes talked about his mission in class. He'd gone to Uganda. He said that's where he met Mr. McKinley, my math teacher, who was on the mission as well. They were together. They weren't married, though. The whole school knew it.
I decided to get an early start on my persuasive essay for Mrs. Norton, my ELA teacher. I couldn't tell my parents about the nightmare. Demons kept talking about being Mormon and in hell, or something like that. It was kind of hard to hear.
I went to school, but I couldn't focus. Even though it was my favorite class, I nearly fell asleep in history.
"Miss Navin?" My head flew up to face Mr. Price. I kept forgetting that I sat in the first row.
"Yes, sir?" I asked quietly.
"Are you alright?" I nodded and kept doing the assignment. He came up to my desk and said in a low voice, "See me after class." Damn. I was in deep trouble now.
I went up to his desk after class, which was fine since it was the end of the day and I walked home anyway.
"What happened?"
"Nothing, sir." I couldn't remember if he was one of the teachers who liked to be referred to formally or not. "I, uh, I didn't sleep well last night."
"Oh," I saw something flicker in his eyes. "Why not?"
"Uh, n-nightmare..." It sounded really stupid.
"Huh. Okay. You can go now, thank you."
"You're not gonna give me detention or something?" He shook his head and shrugged.
"Do you want detention?"
"Oh, no. Not at all. I'm just confused."
"We'll talk tomorrow, okay?" That was concerning. I nodded and ran home.
