Connie's POV
"Connie!"
"Oh em gosh, Arnell! How are you?"
"I'm fantastic!" The smaller girl exclaims, adjusting her glasses excitedly. "Nabulungi just got a promotion at his publishing job so we got a house!"
"That's amazing!" I say, grinning with genuine joy for my friend before taking another sip of my hot chocolate.
"So," Arnell says, leaning back in her chair. "Why did you want to meet her so suddenly?"
"Can't it just be because I missed you?" I ask nervously.
"Not in such the frazzled state you were in when you called me. What's up?"
I take a deep breath. "Yeah. Um. You know how Kellen and I are in a really good place right now?"
"Yeah, you moved in together, right?" Arnell sighs, chin in her hands. "You guys are my OTP."
"Oh, erm, thanks." I blush even more, tucking an unruly strand of hair behind my ear. "Anyways, um, I want to..." I take a breath. "I'm going to propose."
"eEeEEeeeEEeeeeEeeeeeeEEeeeEEeeeEeeeeEEeeEEEEEeeEeeeEeeEEeeEEeeeeeeeEEEEEeEEeEEeeeEE-"
"Arnell-"
"EEEEeeEEeeeEEEEeeeeeEEEeeeeeEEeeeEEeeeeEe-"
"Arnell."
"eeEeEEeeeeEk." Arnell finishes, her eyes wide and locked onto mine. "Oh my gosh Connie! That's huge!" She grins. "That's amazing!"
"Yeah," I say, embarrassedly scratching the back of my neck. "So... I wanted some advice on the proposal."
"Cause I'm Kellen's best friend!"
"Well, yeah."
"I'm touched!" Arnell grabs my hand and squeezes it desperately across the table. "Okay, well, it's Kellen. So... nothing big and public. Something more intimate, just you and her. She'd really like that. And, uh..." she leans in. "It wouldn't hurt to slip a little Disney in there."
"Disney," I say, nodding. "Got it."
"And..." she trails off, thinking. "That's about it. Go wild, girl! Did you get a ring?"
"Not yet," I admit. "I wanted to consult with you first, and you've been very helpful."
"Aw," Arnell says, clutching her chest. "When are you going to do it?"
"This Saturday," I say confidently. "The anniversary of our first kiss back in Uganda."
"That's so soon!" Arnell screams, attracting some attention from some of the other Starbucks customers. She stands and pulls me with her out the door. "Girl, get to a ring store!"
I giggle and nod.

My eyes flutter open Saturday morning, more energized than I normally am at seven AM Saturday morning.
"Hey there," a soft voice says from behind me. I shift to look over and see Kellen smirking up at me from the tangle of blankets and pillows around her.
"There's that smirk," I murmur, rolling my eyes and laying back down.
"Excuse me?" She asks, furrowing her eyebrows in mock offense.
"That classic Kellen Price smirk," I say, reaching over to trace her lips. "You've been making it since I met you. That overconfident, slightly annoying-"
"Hey!"
"-Endearing," I finish, grinning. I go in and kiss her gently, innocently. Tender and quick before I pull away.
"Not so fast, missy," Kellen said, wrapping her arms around my waist and pulling me closer to her despite my giggles. She savors at look over my face before leaning in and kissing me deeply and passionately, yet softer than she had ever kissed me. I practically melted in her embrace right then before pushing her away. "Connie!" She whines.
"Not right now!" I say, laughing as I climb out of bed.
"It's seven AM on a Saturday morning!" I hear her calling as I walk down the hall. "What do we have to do today?!"
So much, darling.
So much.
I stop in the kitchen, making a small cup of coffee for Kellen and some steamed milk for myself before returning to the bedroom where my girlfriend sits, wrapped in a cocoon of blankets. She gratefully accepts the mug of caffeinated ground bean juice and leans against me blissfully. "I don't deserve you," she mumbles into my abdomen before pulling back to take a long sip of coffee.
"I don't deserve you," I correct.
"Maybe so," she says, and I hit her arm lightly. She looks up at me, smirking, and I roll my eyes.
"I told you," I say. "You smirk 24/7. Sometimes I'll roll over in bed late at night, and you'll just be demonically smirking in your sleep. I can only imagine that you are having very triumphant dreams."
"Mmmhmm," she muses, pulling me down to sit next to her and leaning towards me. "Most of them are about you."
I go red.
"Anyways," she says, yawning, and emerges from the monstrosity of blankets. "I gotta go do some stuff."
"I thought you said there was nothing to do?" I ask, confused.
"That's back when I thought I could cancel it for cuddles and making out, but apparently not," Kellen says sassily and I groan.
She pulls on black jeans and a white t shirt, leaning over to kiss me sweetly as she pulls on her checkered vans. "I'll be back at six, okay? I love you."
"I love you too," I mumble, and smile before kissing her again. She waves and flips her hair to her back, somehow perfect without brushing. That girl is an icon.
I lean back against my covers, prepared for a good day of relaxing by myself. Netflix binge watching and Oreos, here I come! I don't need to prepare until five.

"Christine, why?" I ask, shivering. Christine pulled me out of the house at 4:30 for planning to ask Jamie to move in with her. I suggested we stay in the apartment, but noooo, Christine wanted to go to a fricking park. "Why a park?"
"Oh, 'cause our first date was in the park in Uganda-"
"No, not you and Jamie. Me. Why am I in a park?"
"Because I need to test out the feel!" I subtly check my watch: 5:17. I should be setting up the glow in the dark stars on our ceiling right now. I clutch the small box in my pocket as Christine continues to ramble on. "Where was I? Oh, right. So, I'll just look over at her while she's taking one of her quiet moments, y'know, and be like "Hey, Jamie, you're the love of my life, and I want to spend every moment of every day with you. Will you move in with me?"
"Replace the love of my life stuff," I say. "Edging into marriage proposal territory."
"Good point." Christine looks over at me with terribly concealed excitement. "Aren't you supposed to propose to Kellen tonight?"
"Yeah, and I was supposed to start preparing at 5:00. Now it's 5:25! I need to get home!"
"I'm so sorry!" Christine says. "Here, let's get you home! Maybe you'll still have time!"
"Maybe..." I mutter.
I trek back home, my red curls flying behind me in the bracing icy breezes of December. I step into my building's elevator at 5:42, groaning. I could light a candle or two, maybe a few stars. My proposal wasn't going to be nearly as elaborate now.
I step out of the elevator and unlock my door.
"Oh... em... gosh."
My living room has been completely remodeled, going from modern classic to an exact replica of the living room at the missionary hut in Uganda. I clap a hand over my mouth, examining every little detail. It was exactly perfect, complete with the same throw pillows and books on the coffee table. I can't stop a tear from leaking from the corner of my eye.
"Do you like it?"
I turn around to see Kellen stepping out of the kitchen, earning another gasp. She's dressed back in her missionary clothes, white shirt, black skirt, black tie and all. Her hair is perfectly brushed and her name tag is complete with Sister Price. She looks exactly how she did that first day she arrived. Nineteen years old and confused. Four years later, she's even more beautiful in the same clothes.
I nod desperately in response to her question, still clutching my mouth in shock as tears pour from my eyes.
Kellen laughs a little, her eyes crinkling at the edges. I can spot the moisture filling up. "Christine said you would appreciate the nostalgia."
Of course Christine was in on this.
She takes a deep breath and kneels down on one leg, pulling out a red velvet box from her skirt pocket. I choke a little. It's real.
"Constance Rory McKinley," Kellen begins, her voice catching a little at the end as I silently sob. "When I knocked on the door of the mission hut four years ago, I was scared, and confused, and frightened. But when I heard that musical voice singing out 'the new recruits are here!' I became sure of one thing- you were the one. That perfect ginger girl with the sparkling personality and the biggest smile I've ever seen. The one who not only accepts but loves my faults to a fault." She chuckles a little and I can't help but giggle along. "Ever since I saw you, Connie, I knew you were the girl I wanted to marry." I beam through my tears. "And today, I get to continue that goal... by asking you to marry me." She takes an unsteady breath, a tear trickling down her cheek. "Connie, my love, the love of my life... will you marry me?" She opens the box to reveal a beautiful silver princess cut ring with a sapphire in the center, exactly matching my eyes.
I squeeze my eyes shut before opening them again and holding up a finger.
"W-what?" Kellen asks, surprised and confused. She continues to hold up the open ring box, unsure of what to do.
"I need to do something first before I reply," I say shakily, wiping away my tears.
"O-okay," she says, slightly relieved.
I kneel down across from her, on one knee as well, and her eyes widen. I pull out the black velvet box from my pocket, and she chokes back a sob.
"Kellen Andrea Price," I start, my voice very clearly unsteady. "When I saw you, I knew that you would change the Church forever. Little did I know that... that you would change my life as well." Kellen smiles brightly as more tears track down her face. "I never cared if our relationship was right or wrong, because it was our relationship. Ours. And the fact that you were with me made everything right in my mind. I love you more than I've ever loved anyone else. More than I could love anyone else. Maybe you were the missionary that everyone thought was Super Mormon... I thought you were the love of my life. And because of that, because of every single thing about you, I kneel in front of you, asking you to marry me." I open the box to reveal a similar silver ring, instead with red, yellow, and black jewels glinting in a triangle. Kellen gasps.
We look at each other for a moment, before just simply answering in unison: "Yes."
I sob and reach over, still on my knees, to kiss her. I kiss her more passionately than ever before, and we both practically collapse in the other's arms.
We break apart for air, choosing the time to slip the rings onto our fingers. Kellen looks at me, smirking, obviously understanding the color choices.
"I love you and your stupid smirk," I say, leaning in to kiss my fiancée.
