Right Back (Angst)
Hi! This is super short, sorry, but I wanted to write it while I was inspired.
Requested by musicalsandcoffee as the prequel to my one shot Everybody Cried. If you don't remember that one, stop on by and reread it.
TW: Death, sadness
Connor's POV
"Hey, babe," I say, opening the fridge. "Did you drink my milk?"
"No," Kevin replies, looking up from his book. "I thought you had it with your cereal this morning."
"I thought you had it with your coffee- you know what, fine. I'll go and get more." I close the fridge door and take my husband's hand, kissing him quick and ruffling his hair. Kevin groans and desperately pulls his hand back, agitatedly trying to fix his careful updo. I snicker and pull on my shoes. "Be back in ten."
"Love you," Kevin says, settling back into the couch.
"Love you too," I say, slipping out the door quickly.
~~~*Time skip brought to you by me being so freaking excited that its spring break*~~~
"It's closed?" I mumble, groaning. The store next to our house is shut down for repairs. Ugh. The closest store is the giant supermarket, only accessible by highway. I hate the highway. All the cars zooming past, the increasing pressure on the speed pedal... no thanks.
I sigh and climb into my car, checking the gas and buckling in. Texting Kevin: I'll be a little bit later-store is closed.
Going on the highway?
Yeah.
Okay, good luck. Love you.
I pull out of the parking spot and cruise down the streets, taking a deep breath before merging onto the highway. People are speeding past me, faster and faster and faster-
I can't have a panic attack now. I ease the car faster, trying to match the surrounding cars. My heart beats. Still fifteen more minutes on the highway. I can feel my breathing become faster, shallower. Nonono-
A red car appears in the corner of my mirror, driving in the lane next to me. It's dangerously fast, and the woman at the wheel's eyes aren't on the road ahead- they're on a pink phone in her hand.
I look around frantically, but I can't change lanes. The woman creeps closer, the engine making horrible noises. Let me out let me out-
She jolts forwards, and-
Kevin's POV
I can't swallow.
My saliva isn't leaving my mouth.
Instead, it's changing into tears that are pouring down my face. Soaking into my collar as sobs rack my body. People are beginning to leave, throwing my sympathetic looks. Normally, you say goodbye to the spouse. I imagine that I don't look very approachable right now.
Only the elders and Naba remain. They stand around the open pit, waiting for me. We agreed- a separate burial. Only Connor's family.
Arnold takes my hand gently, and leads me over to the hole. I wrap my arms around him and sob, burying my face into his hair. He hugs me back, some of his tears wetting my shirt. I shake desperately, wails escaping from my body.
"It's time," James says softly. Chris clutches his hand, tears streaming down his face.
Naba offers me a shovel. I bite my lip and take it, turning away from Arnold and digging the shovel into the pile of dirt. I lift a lump of soil, and walk to the edge of the pit. Inside lays the simple chestnut box, holding a half of me that I'll never be able to get back.
I take a deep breath, preparing to drop the dirt onto the clean, glistening wood.
I drop the shovel and run.
No one followed.
593 words- again, sorry for the shortness.
I was listening to Two by Two while writing this and the mood didn't feel right
Anyway thanks for the inspiration!!! I love angst ahh
Love y'all!!!! Thank you for 5.1K reads!!!!!!
