Kevin's POV
I sigh, climbing into the shower. Football practice was long. Too long. Being quarterback for a failing team is like being the captain for the Titanic.
Soaping up in the empty locker room, I unconsciously turn to singing. "Can't Fight This Feeling" is one of the songs on the soundtrack of my life. (I googled the soundtrack for this episode oof)Singing peacefully in quiet is the only escape from being Kevin Price, star quarterback. Dating the head cheerleader, Nabulungi.
Little did I know that someone was leaning against the door outside.
~~~*Timeskip brought by me trying to rank BOM songs updates forthcoming as soon as I stop crying*~~~
"Mr. Cunningham?" I ask, sitting down in the chair across from my science teacher. "What did you want to talk to me about?"
"Well," the nerdy teacher says, settling into his seat and pushing his glasses up his nose. "I don't know how to tell you this, but... you're failing science."
"What?" I ask, my heart practically stuttering to a stop.
This really can't be a surprise," Mr. Cunningham continues. "You've been refusing to study evolution."
"Well, yes," I say. "It goes against my beliefs." Can he really not understand that I was taught not to believe in evolution?
"However, because of this," Mr. Cunningham says, pulling a sheet of paper from a drawer in his desk, "You are steadily dropping your grade into a D."
My dad will freak.
"Mr. Cunningham, please," I plead. "I can't fail science."
Mr. Cunningham takes in a slow breath before sighing. "Well, Kevin, there is one thing. If you did it, I would bring your grade up to a B."
"B plus."
"Are you really trying to negotiate with me right now?"
I go quiet.
"If you joined Glee Club."
"Glee Club?!" I sputter. "With those nerds?!"
"Hey now," Mr. Cunningham says sternly. "Do you want to get your grade up?"
"Yes sir," I say softly.
"In fact," Mr. Cunningham says, "you can accompany me to your first meeting right now."
Connor's POV
I tap my foot, adjusting my sweater while Peter rolls his eyes.
"Where is Mr. Cunningham?!" I finally burst out. "He was supposed to be here a while ago!"
"I'm sure he's coming," Chris says, and right on queue short Mr. Cunningham strolls in, arms wide dramatically.
"May I introduce our newest member!" Mr. Cunningham exclaims. "Kevin... Price!"
Kevin Price? I think to myself. The super hot quarterback who's dating the cheerleader Nabulungi?
Kevin emerges from the door behind Mr. Cunningham, looking tall and very much out of place. He looks at us, gathered on the auditorium stage with an expression of confusion, yet simultaneously hot. How??????
"Uh, hi," Kevin says, looking at each of us. Jonathan, Isaac, Chris, Peter, and me.
I stand and reach over for his hand, shaking it vigorously. I was always taught to make a good impression after all. "Connor McKinley, star of the New Directions glee club and future Broadway star."
Kevin looks a bit confused.
Kevin's POV
I am a lot confused.
Connor, who I've seen around school, is possibly the most intimidating kid there is. I would be lying if I said I didn't watch him a little differently from the other kids, but with Nabulungi always on my arm, I never had a chance to actually talk to him. Now I do, and I don't want to make a fool of myself.
"So... you... uh.... sing here?" I ask.
"Yes, Kevin!" Mr. Cunningham says, thankfully saving me. "In fact, I have a duet ready for you and Connor as the leads."
"Why is he a lead?" Peter exclaims in outrage. "That's ridiculous!"
"Take your turn, Peter," Mr. Cunningham reminds him, and Peter looks furious. I look away quickly and take the song from Mr. Cunningham.
"Oh, I know this song!" I say. "My mom loves this movie!"
"It's a classic," Connor says, brushing aside a stray hair before looking at me intensely. I almost stumble away. "Everyone should know it."
"Everyone line up!" Mr. Cunningham says, and I stand in at the edge of the stage. Chris wheels Jonathan next to me, Peter and Isaac next to them. Connor finishes the other end of the line.
"And a one two three go!" Mr. Cunningham counts off.
"I got chills!" I sing quickly, trying to remember the rhythm of the song. "They're multiplying." I want Mr. Cunningham's basic conducting, trying to not look at the others. "And I'm losing control! 'Cause the power, you're supplying... It's electrifying!"
"You better shape up!" Connor replies in song, shimmying (does anyone even say that anymore? back in my day...) to the beat. Peter, Isaac, Chris, and Jonathan "doo doo doo" in the background.
"Cause I need a man!" Connor continues, slowly walking behind the line towards me as my eyes widen. "But my heart is set on you!" He trills, twirling around Peter. "You better shape up," he sings, sashaying past Isaac and Jonathan. "You better understand!" He pushes Jonathan forwards, and Mr. Cunningham thankfully catches him before Jonathan rolls off stage. "To my heart I must be true!" He finally passes Chris and stands facing me.
"Nothing left, nothing left for me to do!" I sing with him, staring into his bright blue eyes. He's very into performing, I can tell, given how talented his voice is. But the intensity is very clear, even during this love song.
Connor takes my hand and pulls me to the front of the stage. Mr. Cunningham grinning. Connor dances with me, taking turns pulling each other back and forth. "You're the one that I want!" We sing together, the others filling in the background. Connor is leading, there's no doubt about it, and I'm sure the terror in my eyes is clear as this small, straight forward man leads me into completely new territory. And we cut off.
"That was great, you guys!" Mr. Cunningham cheers. "I loved it!"
I pull away from Connor, blushing like mad. Connor adjusts his sweater, looking unfazed.
"That's it for the day for Glee," Mr. Cunningham says. "I'll see you tomorrow!"
The others trickle out, leaving me alone with Connor McKinley on stage.
"I, uh..." I say. "You were, uh, really good."
"Thanks," Connor says, grinning widely and stepping closer. "You were too."
"I, um, have to go-" I say, but Connor stops me.
"I know you have a girlfriend or whatever, but if you ever have any questions about rehearsal, call me." He slips a paper into my hand and skips out of the auditorium, humming "You're the One That I Want".
I smile a little and nod, slipping the paper into my pocket. Maybe Glee Club wouldn't be so bad after all.
