“I utterly have no idea why he keeps on punishing me like this,” Lea grumbles under her breath, keeping her eyes closed as her roommate continues to place mascara on her eyelashes.
“Lea, this is no punishment, it’s David’s birthday!” Ina placates. She takes a look at the mirror in front of her to check how Lea looks then proceeds to go back to placing a bit more mascara.
Celine, their third roommate adds, “He’s turned 21 today. That’s a big thing for men since that is basically them entering the legal age.” She watches Ina begin to work on Lea’s eyebrows.
Lea mutters under her breath, “Like as if David hasn’t been doing dangerous things before today.” When she feels the bristles of a small brush on her eyebrows, her eyes fly open in shock. “Hey! I told you not to place that much make-up on me!”
Ina whines, “Come on, Lea! I want to make your eyebrows look nice as well. Also, Celine and I want you to look nice for David.”
The girl huffs, “I’m already wearing a dress the two of you bought for me. Even if I look ‘nice’, David won’t notice. We grew up together, he knows what I look like already.”
“But we want you to look extra pretty tonight!”
Lea scoffs and Celine continues with the urging, “Also, don’t you find it romantic that he invited you over to a family dinner at your favorite restaurant? He wants to spend his birthday with you!”
“Celine, there is nothing romantic about spending dinner with his family. They know me, I know them. How about you focus on whatever you have with Matthias-”
“T-There is nothing going on between Matthias and me,” Celine stutters, then pouts at her. “Lea, you’re mean. I hate it when you place me in the hot seat.”
Lea smirks and looks at herself in the mirror. “What can I say? I could be witty sometimes.”
“More like, all the time,” Celine breathes out. She clears her throat then continues, “I have to leave in a few minutes. Matthias wants to meet up again at the library.” She stands and grabs her bag and laptop from her desk.
Ina announces out loud, "I think I'm done!" She and Celine look at Lea through the mirror and she smiles at her finished output. "Lea, don't you feel a bit more excited now?"
Lea nonchalantly shrugs. "Excited, bored, whatever you want me to feel."
Ina dismisses her roommate's comment with a wave of her hand and carries on with combing Lea's hair. "How will you go to the restaurant?"
"I might take a cab," Lea answers. "David wanted to fetch me here at the dorm but I declined."
"What?!" Celine exclaims, "that would have been romantic!" Ina vehemently nods in agreement.
"I told the two of you that there is nothing romantic between David and me. Don't expect anything like that. Now finish up my hair or whatever, it would be rude if I arrive late, right?"
------------
“Lea, you’re here! Guys, Lea is here!” David announces, causing his family members to wildly cheer and welcome the overwhelmed girl to their table.
“Hi…” suddenly turning shy, she tries to greet everyone back but David’s mother stands to hug her, his father takes her hand to shake it, and one of his brothers even ruffles her hair.
“Dude,” David turns to Lea and holds her hand, “It’s great to have you here with us.”
“Don’t mention it.” Lea holds her head high. “You invited me and I accepted the invitation.”
David laughs and gently squeezes her hand. “Whatever you want to say,” he then leans close to whisper into her ear, “I’m glad that you’re here to spend time with me.”
After dinner, David’s family members took turns singing in front of the crowd to different songs offered by the karaoke machine.
David turns to look at Lea as his brother is busy singing to the lyrics of “I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing” by Aerosmith. “Do you want to sing next?”
Lea widens her eyes in bewilderment. “N-No, thank you. Don't force me into something like that, David," she grunts.
"Woah," David breathes out a laugh and raises his hands in mock surrender. "I was just asking."
"And you know that I would have said no."
He drops his hands and shrugs nonchalantly, continuing with his laugh. “It doesn’t hurt to try asking.”
“I’ll sit here but I’ll watch you sing,” Lea starts, trying to reach an agreement with him. “I won’t go back to the dorm early and I’ll spend all my time here. Just don’t make me sing.”
Her words cause David to beam at her and he grows excited with her proposal. “I’ll put on a show, then.”
“As you always do,” Lea drawls, raising her eyebrows at him.
The 21-year-old then leans closer to the girl before whispering, “This will be for you, though. I'll make sure to give my very best.”
She scoffs and throws at him an incredulous look as she leans back. “Really? I certainly hope you will. You know that I do not like being embarrassed in front of people.”
“Come on, dude.” David jumps to his feet and opens his arms to the side, like presenting himself in front of an audience. “When have I ever let you down?” He winks at her.
Before the girl could even reply, David rushes to the front to pick his song, pressing the designated numbers on the remote controlling the karaoke machine. Lea quietly watches how his brother hands David the microphone just as the intro of the song starts to play. The familiar notes of the piano, the strumming of the guitar, and the beat of the drums coming from the speakers surrounding the restaurant catch Lea’s attention immediately.
She knows this song. She remembers reading about it when she was bored in the university library one afternoon. Out of curiosity, she also listened to it once so that she wouldn’t consider herself ignorant in the music genre of Yacht Rock. But this is her first time to hear another person’s rendition of it, and she can’t deny that she finds it...intriguing.
“What I want, you’ve got and it might be hard to handle! But like a flame that burns the candle, the candle feeds the flaaame!” David sings, dancing to the tune of the background music. “Yeah, yeah!”
His family members start to cheer out loud and sing along to the lyrics and clap their hands to the beat of the music.
Watching her friend act like the entertainer that he is, she softly claps along with the family members. Instead of finding it intriguing, now she’s starting to grow amused. In fact, the way David is performing in front of everyone is making her laugh and enjoy herself.
David notices his friend’s change of mood. He’s happy to see her smile from where he’s dancing at and to be frank, it makes his heart flutter. The person he considers his closest friend in the entire world makes his heart hammer in his chest and unleashes a million butterflies in his stomach. And he finds it cute that her cluelessness of the impact she brings upon him is different from the ever-so practical and logical person that she is.
While singing the chorus, he saunters toward her sitting at the end of the table. "Ah, you! Yeah a-yeah, you make my dreams come true!" He stops in front of Lea and suddenly kneels on one knee. The girl widened her eyes in shock and instantly forgets how to breathe as David gently takes a hold of her hand and presses a swift kiss on the back of it. “I’ve been waiting for, waiting for you, girl. Oh yeah, you make my dreams come true!”
The song ended right after and Lea would not deny how much it bothered her and frankly, made her flustered. Was it in a good way, though?
After the dinner and a few more songs sung by David’s family members, the gathering ended and David offered to take Lea back to the dorm.
He parked the car he borrowed from his brother half a block away from the main lobby of the dorm since Lea requested it. They got down and proceeded to walk beside each other to the entrance of the dorm.
None of them talked as they walked which was...weird for the both of them. They always had something to say, but tonight just feels different.
“You’re awfully quiet,” Lea starts, glancing at the boy, rather man, beside her before looking forward again, noting the incandescent light coming from the poles lining the sidewalk. “You always have something to say.”
David chuckles lightly then huffs out a deep breath through his nose as he places his hands inside the pockets of his pants. “I have a lot of things running in my head.”
“That’s new,” she comments in a playful manner.
David does not mind what Lea said since it is very common of her to point out things like that. Well, she has always been like that ever since the day they met as 9-year-olds. Lea did not have that many friends growing up, so David found it as his mission to be extra patient and warm when it comes to her. He wanted to be someone she could trust aside from herself. He guesses that it paid off well. She now has roommates that understand her and her quirks and can take care of her when he’s not around. Finally, she can be herself around a few more people and David is proud of her.
“I did not want to say it at the restaurant, so I’ll say it now.” David notices a rock in front of him on the street and kicks it to the side before he continues, “You put make-up on.”
Lea groans then crosses her hands in front of her. “Of course, you would notice,” she grumbles. “Ina insisted even if she knows that I find myself hideous.”
David utters incredulously, “Hideous? Wow, Lea, for someone who tops all her classes I never would have thought that you wouldn’t think of yourself as beautiful.”
“Beautiful?” she scoffs, “Yeah, right. I’m beautiful alright,” she says in a sarcastic tone.
“Yes, you are.”
She scoffs again and stops to throw him an exasperated look. “You’re joking.”
“Not this time,” he whispers in haste before suddenly leaning in to press a swift kiss on the girl’s left cheek.
Lea gasps under her breath but lost all sense of feeling in her body that she cannot move an inch further from where she’s standing. What the heck just happened? “D-David...?”
“What happens if I say that that song was a...confession?” he continues, not backing away from what he has started even if he feels that his heart is about to come out of his chest. “I...I’ve been keeping this for a while now, but I couldn’t hold myself back. I’m sorry if I scared you-”
“You’re not playing with me, right?” Lea finally gets to take a small step back and eyes him from head-to-toe, unsure of where to look since the last thing she wants her eyes to meet is his.
“I know that I’m playful, but I can also be serious as you. You always have these brilliant ideas you share with me.”
“David, it’s because you ask me to tell you.”
“I ask you because it's a reason for me to spend more time with you,” he clarifies, meaning every word he says and stuns the girl standing in front of him. “Lea, your mind is out of this world. You give the best conversations out of anyone I know. How could I not fall for you?” he mutters breathlessly. “As cheesy as this may sound, but you make my dreams come true. You really do.”
Lea has always been a serious person. She knows when one would be serious over something. But never has she encountered anyone being serious over another person. And she never thought that it would be David, one of the few people she has grown to trust over the years they have spent together as friends.
She always knows the right words to say in different situations. But he has rendered her speechless…
...and into a state of happiness for maybe, just maybe, there is a part of her screaming that she likes him, too.
Oh boy, Ina and Celine are going to be screaming when they hear of this.
