It is in times like these that Tobit cannot understand his wife, Winter. He loves her, he always has and he always will. Marrying her was perhaps the best decision he ever made. People have always told stories that marriage is not a one-way path of pure happiness and bliss. Tobit refused to believe them simply because he never experienced any kind of huge misunderstanding or argument with Winter.
Win, one of his endearing nicknames for her, is never the type to argue. She hates to be in the middle of a fight and especially when she needs to fight for her side. Yes, she is passionate about her values and beliefs, but she always makes sure to not hinder others.
Perhaps that was when Tobit knew that he was very much in love with her. They may seem different - definitely at the other ends of the spectrum - but it was what constantly complimented each other.
But for the past week, things have not been going their way. It first started with the silent treatment, especially coming from Winter, until two days after she snapped and started to release all her anger at him. Tobit took everything by surprise and was even appalled to know that his wife would blame him over the most menial of things. He took every blow from her with great patience, but every human has their limits. And frankly enough, Tobit is just about to reach it.
After a long day of work, he made sure to pass by Win’s favorite restaurant to take home a serving of her favorite dish - French onion soup with three slices of bread. It’s not that fancy, but it always made her smile.
He misses her - her warmth, her soft and gentle touch, her sweet voice. Now she refuses to go near him when they sleep on the same bed, she refuses to hug him or even give him a kiss in the morning before leaving for work, and she refuses to speak more than two sentences to him. Things have gradually changed between them and he is running out of things to do. He’s in a slump.
“I’m home-”
“Why are you nitpicking everything I’m doing?!” His wife’s strangely loud voice greets him the moment he closes the front door to their house behind him. In a flash, his brows pinched together as he looked at his wife with pure confusion.
"A simple hello would have been sufficient,” he mutters, leaving his bag and the paper bag with food on top of the shoe rack before taking a few steps towards his fuming wife. “What is it now?” He huffs and crosses his arms before him. “What have I done wrong now?” He articulates ever so slowly. It’s tiring to always be greeted home in such a manner. After a long day, no one deserves to arrive home and be greeted with such hostility. Tobit clearly has had enough.
Winter holds up a stack of paper with some sticky notes placed on different sides of the pages. “My advertising proposal!” She utters sternly, “I gave this to you two weeks ago for your opinion yet you decide to decorate it with your notes!”
“Win,” Tobit starts out sharply, almost raising his voice at her, “you asked for my opinion and that’s what I did.”
“I asked for your opinion. I didn’t ask for you to change everything!” She angrily throws the stack of papers to the ground.
“E-everything? Win, I’m just saying what could be done better especially with the proposal-”
“That’s what you’re always good at, Tobit,” She utters exasperatedly, “You only know how to point out all my mistakes.”
He squeezes his eyes shut and pinches the bridge of his nose. Trying to calm himself down, Tobit breathes out deeply and murmurs levelly, “Winter, that’s not what I mean-”
“Yeah?” She taunts him, and Tobit clearly heard that with her tone of voice. He flashes his eyes open at her, his glare meeting hers with the same intensity. “You’ve always been like that. You never see how I can make things better. You never see past my mistakes. You always know that I never get things right.”
He scoffs furiously, “You’re one to talk, Winter.” He throws a hand at her. “You’ve been shouting at me for the past days and I’ve taken every blow without bothering to complain about it.”
“Why? Tobit, I can’t be angry? I can’t lash out at you at times?”
“Listen, Win-”
“Well, sorry to burst your bubble if I say that I am completely angry now!” She heatedly shouts. Her face was all red out of fury.
“Then tell me why you’re angry!” Tobit shouts back, unable to contain his anger anymore.
“I’m angry at you!”
The crease between his brows deepened. “Why?!” He counters, his eyes ablaze with such bitterness.
“Because,” Winter starts in a loud voice, yet it breaks and hot tears now start to fall down her cheeks. The sight alone brings a huge amount of guilt to Tobit. “Because,” she continues, still trying to stay furious amid her crying, “you don’t want to have children!!” And she turns around to rush to their bedroom and slams the door shut.
Tobit had nothing to react with after her final words. He just stood there, in the middle of the living room, all frozen and perhaps a bit out of breath from all the shouting that took place moments before. Winter has been angry all this time because I don’t want children? When has he ever said anything regarding children? Tobit could not recall any conversation he had with Winter when it came to children and he knows that he has a good memory!
What is going on with her, really?
He runs his hands through his hair and huffs out a few breaths for him to finally get the beating of his heart to follow and maintain a steady rhythm. He didn’t like how he shouted and raised his voice at her. Dread filled him to the core. Oh, God, he felt miserable and very much guilty. Winter didn’t deserve that. Even if she shouted at him and has been causing all these fights, she does not deserve to be shouted back at.
With a heavy heart, he goes to their bedroom and is thankful to know that the door is not locked. He slowly turns the knob and pushes it open, but he stays right at the doorway. His heart breaks into a million pieces when he sees his wife, lying down on the right side of the bed with her back towards him, sobbing into the pillow she is currently hugging tightly.
“Win?” He calls out to her softly. She continues to muffle her sobs with the pillow.
Tobit sighs and drops his head dejectedly. “Love?” he tries again. “Talk to me, please,” he begs.
The pillow moves a bit far from her face. “Leave me alone,” she whispers.
“You know that I’m not going to do that. I’m stubborn. I…” he pauses, running a hand down his face, “I don’t want to argue with you. I just want to know what’s bothering you.”
“T-Tobit,” She cries softly, “...I’m pregnant.”
And that is when his heart drops to his stomach. Her words come like a punch in the gut, leaving him breathless. He wastes no time in entering the room and dropping to his knees in front of his crying wife. With wide eyes and mouth agape, he could only manage to sputter, “W-What?”
Winter’s misty eyes blink and she keeps her gaze on her husband’s. “I’m pregnant…” She repeats quietly.
He leans close to the bed for support since the sudden news blew the wind out of him. He reaches out a hand and gently runs it down Winter’s hair. “Love, when did you find out?”
“Three weeks ago…”
His eyebrows squeeze together. “Why did you not tell me?”
“Because…” she hesitates, “I wasn’t sure if you would like the news-”
“Because I apparently ‘don’t like children’?” He interrupts her gently. “Love, when did I ever say that?”
“You were with me at work one day,” Winter starts in a soft voice, “and my co-worker Maureen brought her baby with her. You then whispered to me saying that you don’t want to look that tired as her. And we both knew that her tiredness is because of her baby.”
“I...I said that?”
Winter nods, her bottom lip trembling as tears overcome her again. “It was the way you said it. Raising children sounds like a chore to you. T-That’s why when I found out, I kept quiet about it but I was so scared,” she whimpered, her voice breaking all over again, “I-I got so angry at everything...I couldn’t understand what I was feeling as the days went by.”
Tobit’s shoulders start to heave as he breaks out crying, his whole demeanor falling and rendering him weak to such strong emotions. “Is that how you’ve been taking it this whole time? Oh, God...I’m so sorry. I’m sorry that I made you believe that you were doing something wrong. I’m sorry that you had to feel so alone,” he sobs, wrapping his arms around Winter as she sits up a bit for her to bury her head in the crook of his neck and cry softly. “I want to have children with you, Win,” he breathes out, kissing her head all over, “I want to see our child grow with much love and care from us.”
“Really?” she whispers and Tobit nods, crying harder into their embrace.
“Yes, a hundred percent. No, even a million percent. I love you and our child. I don’t want to fight with you ever again.”
She pulls back a bit to peer into his eyes and cradles his face between her palms. Running her thumbs under his eyes, she wipes away his tears before pressing a tender kiss at the tip of his nose. "Me too. I’m sorry that I’ve been shouting at you," she apologizes, her voice above a whisper, ''I don’t like raising my voice at people, especially you."
"Don't be sorry." Tobit breaks off into a small smile, a genuine one that he has not been able to make for the past week of their constant arguing. It feels freeing to finally smile at her and even receive one on his end. "Oh, God, I want to hold you tightly tonight. We haven't held each other in a long time."
"I miss you…"
"We don't have to miss each other anymore, love."
Winter nods slowly, smiling amid her tears. "You're right. Come here," she brings his face close for her to place her lips on his, kissing him deeply and with so much meaning to it. "I love you," she murmurs against his lips.
"And I love you, the both of you." Tobit then captures her lips with his again, grinning widely into their endless kiss.
