~Chapter 19~
When the next day arrived, Jessica and Jeon were awake in their rooms, both absorbed in their phones. Jeon was messaging Ji Hu, asking what he could do to impress her. Ji Hu suggested that he should keep it simple instead of going for grand gestures, like surprising her at the beach. Meanwhile, Jessica was texting Eun Rii and Soo Ha. She spoke with Soo Ha and learned that she was planning to surprise Jeon tonight at a café by taking him on a date. Eun Rii mentioned that she aimed to impress the boys since everyone else seemed to be in relationships. After finishing her chats, Jessica put her phone down and tried to forget about everything and get some sleep. But soon, she sat up in bed, contemplating, “Everyone is going on dates; why shouldn’t I try to impress him today? I’m sure he’ll be a little surprised, but he won’t turn me down.”
Determined, she jumped up, rushed downstairs, and started making her breakfast. As she sipped her cup of tea, Jeon came down and joined her at the table.
Jessica picked up her phone and messaged Soo Ha, “Hey, I never mentioned it, but I have a crush on someone. I’m going to impress him today; everyone else is doing it, so why should I wait?” Soo Ha replied, “That’s great! Go for it, girl!” Jessica sighed deeply and quickly finished her breakfast. Jeon asked, “Slow down, what’s the hurry?” She dashed upstairs and replied, “Something exciting! I’ll tell you later.” He smiled, knowing that tonight was going to be an exciting one. He continued sipping his tea.
In the other scene, Soo Ha headed to HYBE to record her final part in the song the Gen Zs were creating. As she prepared to leave and packed her things, Young Min, the girl who was always proud of herself and had ruined Jessica's dress at the debut party, approached Soo Ha and asked, “You’re leaving already? What’s so important, huh?”
Soo Ha continued packing as she replied, “Today’s going to be a big blast. I’m going to surprise Jeon and ask him out. What about you? Have you asked Ji Hu? Even Jessica is going for her crush tonight, so I planned to impress all our crushes at the same café. Oh, I forgot to tell her about it.” Young Min, taken aback by the mention of Jessica, exclaimed, “What?! She’s doing it too!?” Jealous as ever, Young Min decided she would try to impress Ji Hu at the same café they were heading to.
Before Soo Ha left, she asked, “Uh— which café?” Soo Ha replied, “Downtown Café,” and then hurried away.
After some thought, Young Min messaged Ji Hu, “Hi Ji Huya, will you come to the Downtown Café if you’re free tonight?” He replied, “Yeah, obviously I’ll be going; I want to see Jeon propose to his crush.” Young Min responded, “I don’t care about anybody else; you’re coming, so I’m happy. Let’s meet there then.” Ji Hu reacted with a thumbs-up, thinking she was just casually joining in.
Everyone was happy and excited about the upcoming night! Little did they know, a storm was brewing, ready to tie some strings together and break others in unexpected ways.
The long-awaited evening fell as 6 PM approached, and everyone prepared to head to Downtown Café. Jessica texted Ji Hu, asking him to come. He was set to go, replying with a simple “Okay,” without sharing Jeon’s plans.
When Jessica arrived early, she found herself waiting for Ji Hu for a long time. Soo Ha and Young Min were already there; Young Min’s table was in the middle, with Soo Ha in the left corner and Jessica on the right, all slightly distanced from one another. Soo Ha stood near the door, holding a bouquet of flowers, while Young Min sat at her table, waiting for Ji Hu. Jessica stood near her own table, a bit closer to the entrance.
As expected, Ji Hu arrived first. Young Min, however, was distracted by a waiter who accidentally spilled a glass of water on her blouse, and she busily wiped it off. As Ji Hu entered, his eyes landed on Jessica, and he waved as he approached her table. Just behind him, Jeon walked in. Soo Ha, momentarily looking away, caught sight of Jeon, and as she reached for her bouquet, she noticed his eyes glistening with tears.
Jeon was crying! She turned to see what had upset him and her heart sank; he was staring at Jessica and, who was proposing to Ji hu while holding a rose. Furious, Soo Ha quickly looked for Young Min. Meanwhile Young Min, in her anger, she crushed the glass in her hand, slicing her palm and causing blood to drip down.
“Young Min!” Soo Ha shouted, drawing everyone’s attention. Ji Hu, confused by the sudden noise, turned toward Young Min and rushed to her side. Jessica, noticing the commotion, also ran to Young Min. Meanwhile, Jeon hurriedly hid behind a pillar at the entrance, desperate to avoid being seen by Jessica.
The scene unfolded with Young Min bandaging her hand in the hospital, the shock of the evening still fresh. Ji Hu had noticed Jeon at the entrance and felt a wave of worry for him as he was out of sight. Leaving the girls behind, he tracked down Jeon’s location and ended up at the beach, where he found Jeon crying, gazing out at the waves. Everyone felt broken except for Jessica, who stood there in confusion.
As she turned to Young Min and asked why she had reacted that way, Young Min sprang up from the bed and shouted, “How dare you set your sights on my Ji Hu! I was about to ask him out, and you snatched him right in front of me!” Jessica remained silent, believing she was somehow responsible for Young Min’s accident.
While Young Min continued her tirade, Soo Ha intervened, grabbing Young Min and shouting, “Stop it!” The room fell silent as Soo Ha added calmly, “Young Min, there’s no point in shouting at her. She didn’t know you were asking Ji Hu out. And Jessica, you! I swear I’ve never seen Jeon so broken! It’s because of you! I had no idea he wasn’t coming because I asked him to join.”
Jessica replied, “What do you mean I broke him? You were the one asking him out, weren’t you?” Soo Ha shot back, “That’s true! But who knew he… likes you!” The realization hit Jessica hard; she had created a huge mess.
Meanwhile, Ji Hu approached Jeon, placing a hand on his shoulders. “Jeon, it’s not what you’re thinking.” Jeon burst out, “You were playing with my feelings, right? You wanted to bring Jessica closer to you, so you came up with that whole plan to impress her! I should have seen the warning signs back at the carnival. How could you do this? You took her from me! You came before me so she could—oh my God, Ji Hu! What kind of friend are you?” With that, he shoved Ji Hu away.
Ji hu replied him, “ no Jeon it's not what you are thinking! I really really really wanted you both to be together, i had no feeling fir her nor i was using you, i just have a soft corner for her as a freind. I didn't know she would like me instead of you, please understand. ”
“I should always understand you, yet you keep playing with me! You made me feel so deeply, and you—do you even know how much it hurts? You’re a traitor!” Jeon shouted. Ji Hu pushed him and replied, “I’m not a traitor! Stop yelling at me!” Jeon became more aggressive, leading to an unwanted fight that left Ji Hu injured. Jeon wasn’t hurt; Ji Hu had held back from attacking because he didn’t want to lose Jeon as a friend. He endured every hit from Jeon, thinking it was just Jeon venting his anger. As Jeon continued to hit him, Jessica and two other girls rushed in to separate them.
They handled the situation and took everyone to Jessica's home. Soo Ha gave Jeon and Young Min water, while Jessica took Ji Hu upstairs, where he was badly hurt and crying in pain. She applied ointment and tended to his wounds. As she wiped away the blood, she asked, “Is it hurting?” Ji Hu pushed her hands away and yelled, “Everything ended because of you! If you hadn’t done that, nothing would have gone wrong! Why did you—I lost my precious friend.” Jessica responded, “I’m sorry, I didn’t know anything. Okay, fine, I’ll fix my mistake now!” She headed downstairs, with Ji Hu following her. Eun Rii came running after the tragic incident to check if Jessica was alright.
Everyone gathered in the hall, and Jessica said, “I caused this problem, so I’m ending it! Young Min can date Ji Hu, and I—I’ll accept Jeon’s proposal. I’m really sorry, Soo Ha; I have no other choice, and I hope you understand.” Soo Ha replied, “No problem. This isn’t a big deal; it’s just a crush. I think it’ll fade with time.” Jessica felt a wave of guilt wash over her regarding Soo Ha. Jeon said, “I agree everything was unexpected, and yes, I loved you the most, but I don’t want to keep you against your will. Ji Hu won’t be able to live with Young Min either. So don’t pressure everyone; give Ji Hu some time. I’m sure he’ll come around. And tell Ji Hu he doesn’t need to worry about me anymore.” He left the hall, followed by Young Min and Soo Ha.
Eun Rii decided to stay with Jessica and Jeon to support them during this tough time. Jessica tried to talk to Ji Hu, but he stormed out without saying a word. Heartbroken, she fell to her knees and cried, telling Eun Rii, “What’s wrong with me? Why did I do this? I separated friends who were more like brothers and broke three hearts that were hoping to date their crushes! It’s useless now; Ji Hu will never accept me unless Jeon talks to him first.” Eun Rii comforted Jessica and guided her to the room.
The upcoming days were extremely challenging for the three of them. Jeon had completely stopped talking to Ji Hu, who had once been his confidant, the person he shared everything with like a living diary. Ji Hu knew all of Jeon's secrets, and vice versa. But the heartbreaking incident had led to misunderstandings that disrupted their lives. Ji Hu had reverted to his silent self, reminiscent of his high school days. He avoided both Jeon and Jessica, delivering necessary updates before leaving swiftly, like a troubled kid lost in the downtown crowd. This behavior led everyone at HYBE to label him as the “downtown depressed kid.” Some speculated that he had rejected a fortunate girl, unaware of the turmoil surrounding them.
Jessica was weighed down by guilt, feeling responsible for tearing apart two brothers who were bound not by blood but by deep friendship. She had no choice but to continue with her life. The day after the incident, Jeon spoke to Jessica as if nothing had happened. Jessica tried to give him space to process what had occurred, but her efforts were in vain; he remained distant and silent, unsure of how to move forward.
Eun Rii visited Jessica frequently, eager to share in her sorrow and lend a listening ear. This bond brought them closer. Meanwhile, Jeon began drinking every night around 7:00 PM, unable to cope with his emotions. Each morning, when Eun Rii checked on him, she found him sprawled on the floor, drunk. She would make him lemonade, helping him sober up.
Eun Rii often felt heartbroken for the two, watching their lives crumble. Daily, either she or Jessica would try to persuade Jeon to speak to Ji Hu. Jessica didn’t want Ji Hu to agree to her proposal; she simply wanted to see the boys smiling and cheerful again. Despite their repeated efforts, they were met with the same resolute answer: “No!” There seemed to be no chance of Jeon agreeing to talk to Ji Hu again, no matter how hard the girls tried to reach him.
On the other hand, Ji Hu felt sympathy for Young Min, but she took advantage of this and began to manipulate him against Jessica. Young Min was intent on exacting revenge on Jessica for trying to take Ji Hu away from her. She had developed an obsession with him and was determined to have him at any cost.
Would Jessica ever be able to reconcile Jeon and Ji Hu? Would the situation ever turn in their favor? Only time would tell.
