Chapter 4: The Bonfire

I don't normally cuss, especially when writing, but this is where they start using cusses more so yeah.

I finally get to develop the ship! Enjoy this wonderful chapter that shall blossom the beautiful Newtmas ship.

I also added a tiny Newtmas thing during Thomas and Gallys fight :)

It turns out that the big surprise was a bonfire.

So, the greenie found himself at the bonfire, sitting with his back resting against a log, and Newt next to him.

Newt soon looked over at the greenie, chewing on a bit of meat he had.

"Hell of a first day, greenie." Newt said.

The greenie nodded to that.

Newt then handed the greenie a brown, dirty looking drink.

"Here, put some hair on your chest." Newt offered, the greenie taking the drink.

He took a swig, the liquid running down his throat. It was oddly warm and the awful taste hit him hard.

The greenie spit it out, coughing, "My god, what is that??" He asked as Newt took the drink back.

He looked at it, chuckling, "I don't even know."

That answer would have amused the greenie if he wasn't gagging on the remnants of the liquid.

Newt turned to face the wrestling sand circle.

"It's Gallys recipe. It's a trade secret." Newt explained, turning back to the greenie.

"Yeah well he's still an asshole..." The greenie muttered.

There was no sound for a couple of seconds as Newt held a gaze upon the greenie. This greenie was cool, Newt could tell he'd like this one ( ;) ).

"He saved your life today." Newt told the greenie, turning forward, "Trust me. The maze is a dangerous place." He added, taking another swig of the brown liquid.

There was another silence, but it was comfortable.

Something clicked in the greenies brain.

"We're trapped here, aren't we?" He asked.

"For the moment..." Newt said, then turning, "but, you see those guys, there, by the fire?" He asked, pointing, "Those are the runners. And that guy in the middle, that's Minho. He's the keeper of the runners. Now, every morning when those doors open, they run the maze. Mapping it. Memorizing it, trying to find a way out." Newt explained.

The greenie mentally sighed, some relief rushed over him, he found someone that would actually give him answers.

"How long have they been looking?"

"3 years." Newt answered.

"And they haven't found anything??" The greenie asked.

Newt chuckled at the boy's eagerness, kind of finding it cute.

"It's a lot easier said than done." He replied with an cute grin.

"Listen." Newt said, holding up a finger.

The greenie went silent, doing as told. He heard sound of metal and stone moving.

"That's the maze, changing. It changes every night."

"How is that even possible?"The greenie asked, knowing that this question probably had no answer.

Newt grinned, "You can ask the people who put us in here if you ever meet the bastards." Newt paused, "Listen, the truth is, the runners are the only ones who really know what's out there. They're the strongest and the fastest of us all, and that's a good thing too because if they don't make it back before those doors close, then they're stuck out there for the night." Newt explained, pausing and looking the greenie in the eyes.

"And no one's ever survived a night in the maze."

"What happens to them?" The greenie asked as Newt took yet another swig if the  disgusting drink.

"Well, we call 'em grievers." Newt paused,  thinking about if he should say his next words, "course, no one's every seen one and lived to tell about it... but they're out there."

They both stayed silent, the greenie soaking up all of the answers he had just been given.

"Right, well, that's enough questions for one night. Listen, you're supposed to be the guest of honor!" Newt told him eager, standing and attempting to pull the greenie up too.

Once the greenie started to resist, Newt interrupted, "No, come on!"

— —

Newt had decided to tell the greenie about the different groups/jobs they had there, both walking around as Newt spoke.

"There we've got the builders. They're very good with their hands but there's not a lot goin' on upstairs." Newt said, walking backwards to face the greenie while tapping the side of his own head.

Newt turned forward, pointing to another group, "and we've got Winston, he's the keeper of the slicers." He said, then pointing to two boys who walked near them, "and we've got 2 med-jacks, Clint and Jeff!" He said, both boys greeting him. "They spend most of their time bandaging up the slicers."

The greenie stopped, making Newt stop as well.

"What if I want to be a runner?"

Newt laughs a bit, "Have you not listened to a word I just said? No one wants to be a runner. And besides, you've got to get chosen."

"Chosen by who?" The greenie asked, then feeling someone bump into his back. He turned around to see a boy get thrown to the ground, then saw Gally.

"Whad'ya say greenie? Wanna see what you're made of?"

People then started chanting "greenie", and the greenie felt like he almost had no choice.

"Alright, The rules are simple greenie. I try to push you out of the circle, you try to last more than 5 seconds." Gally said, the boys around them laughing.

They then started, the greenie instantly getting thrown back into a group of boys, then pushed to the ground, getting a mouthful of sand.

"Come on greenie, we're not done yet."

He quickly looked back to Gally, standing up.

"Stop calling me greenie." He told Gally.

"Stop calling you that? What do you wanna be called? Shank?" Gally asked the others who laughed.

"Gally, pleas-" The greenie heard Newt start to talk from the crowd before Gally kept going, "What do you think, boys? Does he look like a shank?"

The greenie then ran at Gally, both pushing at each other now before Gally managed to push the greenie down again, who jumped back up.

"You know what? I think I'm settled on shank." Gally said, making the greenie lunge forward again.  They pushed each other around again until the greenie swung Gally to the ground.

"Not bad for a greenie, huh?" The greenie started, then feeling Gally kick his feet and he fell to the ground, hitting his head.

Then he remembered something.

Thomas.

Thomas, Thomas, Thomas. My name is Thomas

Yes, I referenced fever code.
