Chapter Two: The Happiest Day

Todoroki crept back into his and (Y/n)'s bedroom, removing the shorter male's phone from the bedside table. He slipped it into the pockets of his sleep pants, once again leaving the man to slumber.

Todoroki made coffee for everyone, then tea for Kirishima. He sat at the table, letting the news sink in. He couldn't believe it. The fact that he couldn't believe it himself made him feel worse for (Y/n). How was he supposed to handle it if Todoroki himself was having a hard time? The tall man sighed helplessly when he heard light footsteps pad towards him.

"Morning, Shou," (Y/n) greeted, "have you seen my phone? It wasn't on the nightstand," (Y/n) questioned.

Todoroki weighed his options for replying before deciding to go with partial honesty — "I have it."

"Oh?" (Y/n) asked.

"I was thinking you and I would go out today, and maybe we could stay off our electronics," Todoroki proposed.

"You're such a sap," (Y/n) deadpanned, glancing at the kitchen, "but sure, I guess, and thanks for making coffee."

"It's no problem," Todoroki smiled softly, "I'm going to go get changed."

The two walked together through their new neighborhood. They hadn't put in the effort of making themselves familiar with the area yet, which made the walk all the more refreshing. There weren't too many people, and it was just more peaceful than the city overall. The two decided that they'd settle in a little café between a flower shop and knickknack store.

The moment they stepped inside, Todoroki immediately revaluated his decision. The first thing he saw, or rather the first person that he saw was Giran. As if being an all too familiar con wasn't bad enough, he tended to reek of cigarette smoke. The smile he gave them sent chills down Todoroki's spine simply from the fact that this guy can't not seem illegally suggestive.

"Ah, new customers?" Giran asked playfully, "I haven't seen your group around in a while."

"You shouldn't expect to," (Y/n) told him, scoffing, "at least not for a bit."

"Is that any way to talk to someone in my position?" Giran questioned playfully.

"You're a cashier," Todoroki pointed out (ever so slightly smug-like, by what (Y/n) could tell).

"You're unemployed," Giran fired back.

"Money has to come from somewhere, you know," (Y/n) pointed out.

In the end, they just sat at a table outside and talked. The air seemed ever so slightly gloomy, almost taking away from the beautiful day. Todoroki could only assume that anyone his age (or anyone old enough to remember the person) had heard the news and was upset.

"Where are we going?" (Y/n) asked, continuing to look around the unfamiliar terrain.

"I don't know," Todoroki smiled, "we'll figure it out when we get there."

"I can't tell if you're messing with me or being stupid," (Y/n) muttered under his breath.

Todoroki didn't respond, but he smiled as soon as he caught sight of the person he was looking for. He had heard a little rumor that he could find an old friend here, and Todoroki was more than glad to see the other person just as unsuspecting as (Y/n) was. He began to take larger steps, annoying the male next to him.

"Ashido," Todoroki called, catching the pink-skinned woman's attention, "Ashido, hey."

The young woman froze, going slightly stiff as she nearly dropped her phone. She had part of a mind to slap the two of them, but something overrode that sense. Mina walked towards both of them, pulling them into an embrace with her arms around their necks. The gesture was returned, and (Y/n) looked at Todoroki in disbelief.

"Don't tell him about Aizawa," Todoroki whispered, "please don't bring it up."

Mina was confused, but nodded anyway.

"Mina, how have you been?" (Y/n) asked.

"I've been doing fine," Mina answered, "I'm more concerned about you. You haven't had anymore surprise encounters, have you?"

(Y/n) just chuckled, then went on talking. Todoroki felt something rise in him when he saw the look in (Y/n)'s eyes. It was the same oblivious happiness he had when he'd first become a part of his life. It was older and knew more overall, but that was about it.

"So you guys are together? Like, together-together?" Mina questioned chirpily.

"Yeah..." Todoroki answered, "it's been a bit rocky, but yeah."

"Congratulations..." Mina trailed off as her expression switched to one of alarm, "I just remembered that I'm meeting other heroes here. You two should head off."

"Oh, that's too bad." (Y/n) scratched the back of his neck.

"I'll you two around?" Mina asked.

"Hopefully," Todoroki smiled, "tell Yaoyorozu we said 'Hi'?"

Mina nodded before the two continued walking.

As the day continued, things just got more and more giddy. They stopped at a pop-up carnival for a couple of hours, doing all the fun rides like the rollercoaster and scrambler, deciding to skip the Ferris wheel in order to walk off some of the sugar they'd consumed. Dinner was had at a late hour, and the cheap deserts were actually amazing.

The two of them walked semi-aimlessly on their way home. They had traveled several miles away, and it was already late, so getting home later shouldn't be of concern. They moved in sync, rambling about things that probably shouldn't be said in public. The small laughs and chuckles were a nice sound to both parties, but Todoroki was beginning to feel guilt set in.

They were about a block away from their home when Todoroki decided to take a detour.

"Shou, I know we're not used to this place, but we should both know that our house is that way," (Y/n) stated as he pointed in the opposite direction that Todoroki was walking.

"I know," Todoroki smiled at him, "now come on, another little diversion won't hurt."

"Whatever you say," (Y/n) sighed.

They settled on the grass in the little park by their house. Todoroki was looking up, trying not to look (Y/n) in the eye. He didn't want to spoil the day, but he knew it had to be done.

"How was today?" Todoroki asked.

"It was nice, seeing Mina was a pleasant surprise," (Y/n) laid down, resting his head on the ground, "I'm pretty sure I can add this to my list of 'Happiest Days'."

Todoroki faltered at the thought. Maybe I should hold off on telling him until tomorrow..? Todoroki immediately felt terrible for even considering that. That wouldn't be fair to (Y/n). That left him with the question, How do I break it to him?

"Hey, (Y/n)," Todoroki called quietly.

"Yes?" the shorter male responded drowsily, the hour catching up to him.

"How would you react if I had to tell you something that might ruin the rest of today?" he asked, unsure of himself.

"I don't know," (Y/n) responded, "there's only about an hour or so left of today, anyway. There isn't much of today to ruin."

"'You sure?" Todoroki swallowed thickly when he saw (Y/n) nod.

"Just tell me," (Y/n) said encouragingly before chuckling, "you're starting to scare me."

Todoroki went quiet for a second, his mind running in circles. He looked over to (Y/n), seeing the still-there happiness from the day they'd had. He knew that he had to say it now, he'd basically let (Y/n) know that something was up. Todoroki sighed, taking in the jubilance in (Y/n)'s face one last time.

Todoroki ran a hand through his hair before speaking. "Aizawa died yesterday."

(Y/n) was quiet for the rest of the night as he was given the details. It hadn't set in yet, so all he felt was emptiness.
