Chapter Six: Acquaintance

Kirishima had dumped Deku in the passenger seat of his car and gotten on the expressway two hours ago. Deku basically passed out twenty minutes into the drive, and it finally dawned on Kirishima that he should call the guys. Now was as good a time as any, either way, as he was stuck in some terrible traffic. He pulled his phone out of his back pocket and quickly dialed Todoroki (he was aware that the other two would surely blow their lids).

"Hello?" Todoroki's bored voice sounded through the car, and Kirishima could hear (Y/n), Bakugou, Toga, Shigaraki, and a few others at the bar in the background.

"Hey, uh, Shouto, sorry for hitting you guys up so late," Kirishima sighed and side-eyed Deku, "I ran into a small problem on the way back."

"No problem," Todoroki replied, "'you on your way back?"

"Not yet," Kirishima told him, "I'm taking care of someone— something really quick."

"You already slipped up, now spill," Todorki declared.

"I ran into Mr. Number-One-Hero on my way back, he's currently passed-" Kirishima heard Deku groan and saw him stir, "he's currently in the process of waking up in my passenger seat."

"Good thing you didn't kill him, (Y/n) would lose his mind," Todoroki sounded relieved.

"I know that," Kirishima responded, "I'd be more worried if you or Katsuki ran into him, God knows you two would kill him."

Todorki glared at his phone, knowing Kirishima was right, "Yeah, yeah. Anyway, Eijiro, get back soon. Katsuki's worried about you."

"I'm teasing him about that later," Kirishima grinned, "you know that, right?"

"Of course, so is everyone else," Todoroki smiled at his phone as well, "even Kurogiri might join in just this once."

Kirishima chuckled, "That'll be great, anyway, Deku's starting to wake up, so..."

"Got it, see you later," Todoroki bid.

"Yeah, see ya," Kirishima focussed again on the road as the traffic lightened up.

Deku finally woke up a few minutes after Todoroki had hung up. He looked around, seemed to panic for a second, then the hero slowly began to recall the recent events of that day. To make sure he wasn't out of his mind, he turned to his left to see Kirishima in the driver's seat. Kirishima, despite knowing he was awake, did not bat an eye or spare him a glance. Kirishima just kept his eyes on the road as he pulled off the expressway.

Deku noticed the small smile on his former friend's face. The one that was happy, content, the one that he had once been so familiar with in the past. It scared him to think that that exact same smile, the one that had once been innocent, could now be holding some intention of malice. Kirishima noticed the look on Deku's face and suddenly stopped smiling. He hadn't realized he was still grinning lightly after his conversation with Todoroki.

Kirishima parked in front of a hospital, and Deku gave him a confused look. Entering either of them in the hospital as a patient would basically be turning himself in, so that wasn't his plan. If that wasn't, though, what was?

Deku's question was soon answered after the thought. When the two had arrived at the front desk, Kirishima didn't stop at the front desk or anything, he just went straight up to the room he was aiming for. No one questioned it, as if he knew his way to the room, he must be a regular visitor. Kirishima wordlessly led Deku to a room on the eleventh floor. Deku suddenly realized how stupid this was. He was mindlessly following a dangerous villain to who the hell knows where, without a second thought at that!

'Sorahiko'

"Who's room is this?" asked Deku.

"You'll see, now go inside," Kirishima sighed, he should be on his way back soon.

"..." Deku wanted to protest, but simply did as told.

Deku choked on air when he saw the withering figure of an old man in that hospital bed. He was pale and thin, and it took him a moment to recognize the guy. He was particularly short and extremely wrinkly. He didn't look like he had long.

"Hmm?" the old man (who should have been asleep at this hour) squinted to look at him, "Midoriya?"

Deku froze, he knew who this was now, "Hey, Gran Torino..."

"What brings you here at this hour?" his voice was raspy and it was obvious he was having a hard time talking.

"An old acquaintance, sir," Deku answered politely.

"It was that villain, Eijiro Kirishima, hmm?" Deku didn't know how to respond. How did he know?

Deku sighed, "Um, yes, actually. How'd you know?"

"That boy has visited me a few times in the past month," Gran Torino smiled at the memory, "it's a shame, the path he took. He's such a nice kid."

Deku felt ashamed that someone who barely knew his mentor visited more than he did, "I suppose..."

"What happened to your face, boy?" Gran Torino finally noticed the forming bruises.

"Kirishima and I got into a fight upon our meeting earlier, sir," Deku frowned.

"That's too bad, but I can see why," Gran Torino looked at the clock on the wall, "Eijiro is a villain, and you are a hero, it happens."

"..." Deku had no response.

Gran Torino's heart monitor sped up at an alarming rate. Deku went to call the nurse or a doctor, but the former teacher and hero stopped him, giving an old, wrinkly smile. Deku panicked.

"That said, you need to do your job, son," Gran Torino nodded at the door, "you are a hero for a reason, now act like it."

The monitor went flat, Gran Torino went limp, Deku froze, and Kirishima smiled sadly from outside the door. That was his cue to leave, and he did. He had humiliated the hero enough for one night, Kirishima need not hear him grieve too.

Deku didn't cry, nor did he wail. He was just quiet, and he felt terrible. His old mentor had just taken his last breath telling him how fond he was of a villain and how he needed to do his job better. It had been so long since he'd seen the old man that he had long lost any attachment to him. Deku felt terrible for that; did he have the right to feel bad about that now? It was his fault that he hadn't made time to see him, and it was too late to fix that now, so did he deserve to be upset about it? Gran Torino had taken a liking to a villain who was kind at heart and came to visit him while his own mentee didn't even know what hospital he was in; do I deserve to feel this now?

"Shouto."

"Yeah, Dabi?"

"You should make your move, now's as good a time as ever."

"I don't need you to tell me how to handle this."

"Okay then, good luck anyway."

Now isn't the right time anyway, we should be alone.
