Chapter 2

"Rebecca! Stop trolling people! It's not nice!" I heard Rosemary yelling as I changed in the bathroom. I got to know the three of them more since last night. I was right when I guessed that Courtney was five, but Rosemary was also five when I thought she was six. Her birthday is in two months, and Courtney's just passed three weeks ago. Rebecca is six, so she's the oldest. I guessed that's one of the reasons why she feels that she's the best out of all of us. It didn't bother me, though, since she did plenty of stupid things.

Plus, we knew she's only joking, even if she will never admit it.

I was changing into my uniform. It was not too bad. It was light green - almost white - with navy blue trimmings, which included a blue triangular collar. We could also choose blue pants, shorts, or a skirt. I chose pants, since I wore it more often before. I'm not really into the other two - unless it's summer time or early fall, and probably late spring. Then I didn't mind the shorts. All of them had pockets, too. They also gave us a headband and some hair ties in case we wanted to do something to our hair. I just kept mine down, since I didn't feel like doing anything to it.

I still wore Daddy's jacket. I didn't care if I wasn't allowed to, or if it didn't fit. I was doing it anyways! I took the brush that came in my bag that the other people packed for me and ran it through my hair again. The bag just had the normal necessities: a comb, toothbrush, toothpaste - they already had some, but it was just in case I wanted my own - and some other things like that. There were also extra blankets and pillows in case I wanted them.

I stepped out of the bathroom, still wearing Daddy's jacket. "Hey, it's not my fault that you sat in a pile of toothpicks!" Rebecca argued from the top of her bunk, biting her lip and trying not to laugh.

"Where did you get the toothpicks anyways?" Courtney asked, amused. "It's not like they just give away toothpicks at lunch!"

"And why would you put them somewhere that they could hurt someone?" I asked. Surely you could've put the toothpicks in a drawer or something so that it's out of the way.

Rebecca chuckled. "Then where's the fun in that?" She asked and cracked up laughing.

Rosemary glared at her. "So you did want me to sit in it." She said flatly.

     Rebecca chuckled. "Maybe~!"

"Well, you have to admit, that was pretty funny," Courtney smirked, "watching you jumping around like a retard!"

I scratched my head. "But isn't it dangerous to sit on something like that?"

"Well, May-May, there are two kinds of people in the world." Rebecca started, leaning off her bed and dangling her right arm. "Some people are uptight bums, while the others are-"

Rosemary didn't let her finish. She reached up and yanked down Rebecca's arm, causing her to fall to the ground with an "Urff!"

Rosemary stood up straight, one hand on her waist and the other holding Rebecca's arm. "While the others don't stop to think about the consequences!" she finished.

Rebecca sat up and glared at Rose, pulling her arm away from her. "So what if it hurts? You'll live." She grumbled.

"Yeah, but it won't be pretty if she gets an infection." Courtney said.

Infection? What's that? Daddy never really taught me about health stuff. He mainly talked about history and other kinds of science. "What happens if you get an infection?"

Courtney looked at me, "Infections makes the injury more painful, and sometimes makes it swell or the area around it becomes red." She pointed out and smiled, "My mom was a pharmacist before she died, but she wanted to be a doctor. She always told me what to do in case I get burns or cuts in the kitchen, what to do when I got shocked after sticking my finger in an outlet, which plants are poisonous, and all sorts of other things!"

I nodded, head down. "Oh..." I muttered. How can she simply say that her mom died and not feel anything about it?

Rebecca eyes me suspiciously. "Hey Mayflower, are you alright?" She asked.

I looked up, and forced a smile. "Yeah, I'm fine!" I said and walked over to my bunk - which was below Courtney's - and laid down. I'll be fine. Just like she said last night, being an optimist is more useful than being anything else!

Rebecca didn't look convinced, but she shrugged. "Alright."

Rosemary eyes my jacket. "You know you can't wear that, right?" She asked.

I shrugged. "Im wearing it anyways."

Courtney looked at me, and looked at the clock on the wall, "We should start heading out, we have to show May-May the things!" She said cheerfully and rushed towards the door, slamming it open.

The three of us left in the room flinched. Rebecca stood up. "Oh look! Another reason for our neighbors to hate us!" She said as she headed out the door, but she didn't sound like she cared at all. Heck, she sounded accomplished about it!

"Please no." Rosemary complained, standing up. "Liana already yelled at us for loosening the bolt on her chair at lunch!"

     I chuckled. "You did?"

"Pfft! No. Courtney and Rebecca did!" Rosemary smiled. "I just watched since she stole my brownie. In this group, we look out for each other, no matter what!"

Hm... But a brownie seems like a stupid reason to hurt someone... I thought to myself. I didn't say anything and followed Rose out the door.

"And this is a wall." Courtney lectured to me. "This wall is named Frank. Be very nice to Frank." She spent five minutes telling me about a poster on a wall showing the map of Europe earlier. "Frank will always be there when you trip nearby." What did Rebecca and Rosemary have to talk about with the English teacher? "Unless you miss him. Then that's your fault."

I rolled my eyes, and held my hand out to Frank, "Nice to meet you Frank. I hope that one day I will catch you when you fall." I said.

"PFFTAHH~!!! WHAT THE PILLOW BABIES WAS THAT DEEP POETRY JAZZ?!?" She collapsed to the ground in a laughing fit.

I chuckled. "Well, I only know one person who gives names and backstories to inanimate objects." I said.

Courtney sat up and looked at me. "Have you ever done it? It's fun!"

"No, I have never done it before because I'm not you!" I said, trying to sound a bit like Rosemary. I wasn't very good at it, so that failed, my voice sounding younger than the other three room mates.

Courtney collapsed laughing again. "You dope, you're not a very good Rose!" She said in between breaths.

I couldn't help but laugh. "I know! But that's why I'm called Mayflower and not Rosemary!"

Sitting up, Courtney looked at me. "Yeah, and I'm glad! Why would I want another Rosemary? We don't want two of her. Just one of them is fine!" She said happily.

I chuckled a bit more. Something tugged at my mind. Should I ask about her mother, and how she stays so happy?

Nah. It would be awkward, and too soon. This is my first full day, after all.

"Anyways, it'll be lunch soon. Lets go!" Courtney said cheerfully and grabbed my arm, dragging me to the cafeteria.

I flinched, and followed her awkwardly. "B-but don't you need permission to do this kind of stuff?" I don't want to get in trouble on my first actual day here!

"Nah, we already have permission! They made me your personal tour guide, so I can do what I need to do!" She answered cheerfully. "Rebecca showed me around when I first came here, and I showed Rose the this place!" As we neared the hall with the lunchroom, Courtney slowed down and let go of my arm. "And I want food."

"Okay." I looked at the walls. They were blue: a solid dark blue on the bottom half and a solid sky blue on the top. "Does the wall color mean anything, or is it just for decoration?"

"Hm?" Courtney looked at the walls, and smiled. "Oh yeah! This place used to be a mental hospital."

     "What?"

Courtney just smiled at me. "They painted the walls blue to try to calm the patients. Did you know that about five people died here from hands of insane people every month before this became an orphanage?"

"What is wrong with you, woman?!" I yelled. "How can you just say that?!" This person ain't normal.

Courtney started to laugh hysterically, and it took a bit of time to catch her breath. "You actually believed me? Pfft, I was kidding, you derp!" Of course, this is Courtney... "But I wan't kidding when I said that it's meant to calm people down."

I took a deep breath, relieved. "That makes more sense."

"But I have to be honest, learning here is pretty stressful." I looked over at her, a bit surprised to hear that from someone so happy-go-lucky, "When I first came here, I had just an average IQ of 108. I got a tour from Rebecca, who was here since she was only three months old." So this place was the only place Rebecca grew used to...

"Then they started piling tons of lessons and work on me, trying to raise my IQ so that I wouldn't drag everyone down. Rosemary went through the same thing." Courtney smiled at me again. "But look at us now! I am in the group with the highest IQs!"

I looked down. "I guess I'm lucky to be raised to have a high IQ already." I mumbled to myself.

I heard Courtney chuckle. "Yeah, you're a lucky persona!"

     "How do you do it?"

"Hm?" Courtney gave me a confused look.

"How do you stay so...happy?" It doesn't make sense. Telling me her past didn't seem to upset her at all!

She chuckled again. "Well, it ain't much use being anything else!" The bell rang, and I flinched. It sounds like those old school bells in movies! "Oh look, it's time for food! Hopefully it's fish sticks!" Courtney said cheerfully and opened the door to the cafeteria.

I followed her, I may have a high IQ, but I still have a lot to learn!
