Year 2135

A familiar 8-year old girl appeared on the screen.

It was in a room in year 2135.

An old man and I sat face-to-face.

I shook my brown hair and blinked my gray eyes as Adrian - my grandfather's ones.

Lin: "You still invent that stupid machine?"

What a sharp-mouth tongue girl! I could imagine what the old man said in his mind.

Orange vendor: "Sending back the message to the past is not impossible as you though. Inventing a robot with feelings is actually impossible thing. There is nothing could mimic the human's soul"

I still drank my water cup on the table and there was no arguing expression in my stone face.

Lin: "It is not true! Joy has soul and she has feelings too. She cared for me as my passed away mother. My mother's soul lives inside her"

Orange vendor: "Hmn? That leader of The Paradise? How could you prove it?"

I showed my confident face.

Lin: "It is easy. Recently, she was angry with me because I touched her pendant. Only my mother could scold me like that. I still remember it clearly. If you do not believe, I could show you my memory"

Then, I touched my watch to turn on some buttons. Memory technology and robots with the paradise technique have become popular among people around the world since this new century event.

Orange vendor: "No, no, you know that I hate that memory technology"

Lin: "Poor old man, you are so fogy"

Orange vendor: "You really thought that she is your mother because she inherited your mother's memory?"

Lin: "She is my mother now. Thanks to memory technology, we need not to say good bye to our family. They will continue to live in robot's bodies. Everybody is grateful to this technology. It is really make the world become a better place"

The Orange vendor sighed.

Orange vendor: "It is so boring. You are just as the same as other people nowadays. I really miss my friends from my old days"

Lin: "You said about that Vigil terrorist again? Jeff and Mode? They tried to destroy the world and my grandfather stopped them successfully. Why do you keep mentioning wicked people who were killed long time ago?"

Orange vendor: "Hey, you forgot Syd. There were 2 members and 1 hacker-robot in that team. The truth is that they were known as terrorists because they were defeated by the Paradise army in the last battle. Anyway, we should pass that issue now"

Lin: "No, we could not pass like this. You must admit they were bad guys. This was proved by our history books. They wanted to destroy the only way to help human overcome the extinction in this century. My teachers said someday all our memories will be transferred to the robots that we could live forever inside them. If everyone knew you like Vigil terrorist like this, you will be taken to the prison immediately. How can I still talk to someone with an antisocial mindset like you?"

Orange vendor: "Who know? Anyway, I still not surrender yet about the robot topic. How could a real mother be angry with her 8-year old daughter like that just because she touched her pendant?"

Lin: "..."

Orange vendor: "^^ now I win a half?"

Lin: "That pendant has clover shaped. She told me it was the key to lock a demon who want to break the our paradise"

Orange vendor: "Hmn? What kind of fairytale is it?"

Then he continued.

Orange vendor: "But isn't it safer if she just broke that key? Someone could steal it to release that demon"

He smirked.

Lin: "I asked her the same question too..."

Orange vendor: "So what did she say?"

I felt a bit annoyance to remember that.

Lin: "She said the demon would suffer the pain when the time comes"

It was hard to believe that Joy who had a gentle character could say something like that.

The Orange vendor showed me his concerned face as he knew that I felt unwell.

Orange vendor: "You're a genius, Lin. You are the most intelligent child I knew through all my life. Even the adults, I don't think they could compare to you"

Lin: "Why did you suddenly talk like this?"

Orange vendor: "I believed that in the most critical situation, you could make a right decision even it is a painful decision"

He murmured to himself but I still heard it.

Orange vendor: "So I made this orange for you..."

I knew he talked about the message time machine but how could he believe something like that.

First, he would never succeed to invent a message time machine anyway.

Second, even he succeed, he should use it for himself. I was satisfied with my life now. I did not have anything I want to change in the past. And I would never bet my present for some uncertain things.

10 years passed already.

Adrian: "Happy birthday Lin ^^"

I blew out the candles on my birthday cake happily.

Adrian: "Now I definitely mistake you and Joy if it is not because of your eyes color"

I stared at Joy. The older I got, the more I looked like Joy – Hansol's first modern robot who was created to lead the Paradise.

She patted my head.

Joy: "Hansol is in lack of creative sometimes. He created me with my character as his tastes but he did not have some special tastes in girl appearance so he just made my appearance as his guest's appearance"

Lin: "Oh, you meant he made you as my grandpa's female version?"

Joy: "Yeah, he told me about that later. However, he changed my eye color. It maybe was because he knew that Adrian hate his gray eyes"

Lin: "I like your eyes color, grandpa ^^ But was uncle Hansol really in lack of creative like that, Joy?"

Joyn: "Well I think it took very much time for him to choose those kinds of things" 

Adrian: "He even didn't know how to name her..."

Lin: "Huh? Then who did name you this beautiful name, Joy?"

Joy: "I named myself. I really want to bring joy to all people"

Then she smiled a gentle smile.

She was so good and kind. How could the Orange vendor say that robots with the paradise technique were just programming machines? They loved human and protected human with all they were.

No, they were not they. They were human. They were us.

Lin: "Who did send me this present?"

The shipper delivered me a present and when I opened it I saw an orange and a card. Now I could guess who gave me that present... I read the card with my teary eyes.

The orange vendor, he died because of his old age 6 months ago.

I hold the orange shaped message time travel machine in my hand and smiled lightly.

Just gave me a real orange that I could eat it, old man.

Then I put it in my bag and went to the lottery shop.

There were black marks appearing on his skin.

And when I looked at the scratch on his elbow, I was surprised that I saw the black color mixing with red color blood.

I helped him to come to a nurse robot nearby.

Lin: "Please help him, he was-"

Nurse robot: "Monster"

Lin: "What?"

Without any response, she turned on the laze gun hiding inside her arm and shot us.

Although I quickly kneeled down to evade, the young sick man still got shot in his chest.

His shirt was soaked in black blood and he died instantly.

Lin: "What are you doing? You killed him"

I was so shocked and panicked that I could not stand up but yelling at her.

Nurse robot: "Kill the monster to protect human"

Then she pointed her gun at my head.

Even though I did not understand what happened, I still realized that she want to kill me at least.

I pushed my head to her chest. Due to lost balance, she fell back to the ground.

Not having time to relax after escaping her gun, I realized that everybody was yelling in pain and chaos. Their skins appeared black marks.

The most terrible thing was that all robots with their blue eyes nonstop killing people when murmuring 'Kill the monsters to protect human'

A son robot killed his mother human.

A niece robot killed her grandmother human.

In that bloody scene, I saw that black marks started appearing on my skin too.

Suddenly, I heard Joy's voice from the center speaker of our city.

Joy: "Kill the monsters to protect human"

Then she continued to count down something.

Finally I understood that she counted down the number of people who died by that mysterious sickness or were killed by robots.

It was the end of the world.

I lost my consciousness in pain while the orange vendor voice was echoing in my head.

Orange vendor: "Inventing a robot with feelings is actually impossible thing. There is nothing could mimic the human's soul. Robots are not human, they are just robots"

I did not know what happened to our bodies now, a kind of sickness? I did not care.

But how could robots turn their backs against human and kill those who used to be close to them so easily like that?

Hansol's old lab

Lin: "Agh"

I groaned in pain when I woke up in an unfamiliar room.

Adrian: "How do you feel, Lin?"

After I realized my grandfather was standing in front of me, I burst into tears and hug him tightly.

He patted my back.

I choked up and could not speak any words.

Adrian: "It is okay dear! It is okay"

I kept shaking my head even though I could not speak.

After an hour, I tried to calm down and asked him.

When I looked at my watch, I knew that I slept about 3 weeks.

Lin: "Where are we now? How can I still alive? What are happening to us?"

Even though I did not feel hurt and hard to breathe as I used to be, there were still black marks on my skin and my grandfather's skin as if they reminded me what I experienced was not a dream.

Adrian: "My squad saved you on time 3 weeks ago. Then I injected medicine into your body. We are hiding in the Hansol's old lab..."

Lin: "Who is your squad? Robots?"

Adrian: "No, my human soldiers. All robots was out of our control now"

Lin: "Where are your soldiers? I only see you and me in this place"

He kept his silence for seconds which made me feel uneasy.

Adrian: "They died because of sickness before the virus medicine was found. And more than 2/3 population died too"

It was as if a sword stabbed directly into my heart. But my uneasy feeling was still there.

Lin: "Is the sickness the only cause?"

My grandfather bit his lips.

Lin: "Or robots killed some of them? Or robots killed most of them?"

He did not response anything as if he confirmed my thought was right.

Pffft

I laughed like an insane person. I was scared to deduce more. I was afraid that finally it was Joy who was the leader of that massacre.

She was the one I thought as if she was my real mother.

Lin: "Why did robots do that? Were there any bugs in their system?"

Adrian: "No... I did not realize that before. Robots with paradise technique distinguished human by the nature of cells. The virus from that worldwide rain attacked and changed the nature of cells of all people despite their hiding place. Therefore, robots considered human infected that kind of virus were monsters that need to be killed to protect human.

Robots did not realize that at the same time, there were no human in the world who were suitable to their standard"

Lin: "What a stupid and shortsighted standard! Distinguish human by the nature of cells? But hey, did you really think that the robots did not realize? Or they realized but they just did not care?"

I did not understand why I was so calm now. Even though I knew that it was my grandfather – Adrian, who brought that robots empire to its heyday which leaded to this world end, I could not be angry with him.

Lin: "You could not turn them off?"

Adrian: "No, they are transcendent robots, especially Joy"

Suddenly he bowed his head and coughed up black blood.

Lin: "Are you okay? Is the medicine not working?"

When he raised his head, I could see tears in his eyes.

Adrian: "I did not use the medicine"

Lin: "Why?"

Adrian: "It must be a destiny that I am allergic to the medicine components. Actually, it is a blessing to me anyway. The truth is that I could not bear it anymore, Lin. I... I want to die. Everybody died because of me, this century's extinction was because of me. It was so stupid to think that robots could have the real feelings and replace human. They are fake human. Suddenly I thought about the orange vendor's birthday card.

Lin: "Grandpa, I am your niece. If it was not because of you, I could not be born. Do you really think I am a trash or something?"

I could not understand why I could smile lightly at that time.

Adrian: "..."

His old face with teary eyes wrinkled in pain and confusion.

Adrian: "No, you are not a trash or a failure, Lin. Your mother and you are my prides..."

Lin: "You invented the virus medicine at the last minute too"

Adrian: "But most of people around the world were killed by robots"

Lin: "We are family, grandpa so we will take the responsibility together. No, we must take this responsibility"

After I saw my jacket in the corner of the room, I came to take it and took out the orange.

Lin: "You are the only person in this world could make the virus medicine. Give me a data chip with medicine recipe and virus disaster scenes. If we could send the message to the past and persuade them to believe it, everything could change. Human will know about the disaster and have more time to promote the virus medicine. Lin: "Even that grandpa, we have nothing to lose now. Living alone and hiding forever in this dead world was not happy. I'd rather die than live like this"

He kept his silence at the moment.

Adrian: "The old west prison had a machine with power core as much as the center factory"

I felt that his sickness come to its edge.

Adrian: "Yeah, I will do anything I could... but Lin, please, even you see anything, please don't hate me"

After that, he did not say any words to me. He just did what he did. I helped him sometimes to stand still when he suddenly kneeled down due to his sickness.

Finally he spoke up after he finished.

Adrian: "The inventor of this machine is not only a genius but a greedy person. There was no data input gate in this machine. It contained a hacking code to steal energy and even a code to transfer data. It means that if you could supply enough power for it, it could send an enormous amount of information to the past through an intermediate data storage machine"

Lin: "You meant I need to find a data storage machine to insert data before using the orange to send message to the past? It was so complicated"

Adrian: "No, it was not. Because every machine with an enormous power core had the ability to store data"

Then Adrian instructed me the steps to use the orange.

Lin: "At first, I will insert the data chip which you handed to me into the old west prison's machine. Secondly, I will connect the orange to that machine. Finally, the orange will automatically started its hacking code and send all information to the past. Is it right, grandpa?"

There was no response from Adrian so I turned my eyes from the instruction note to him.

He bowed down his head when sitting on a chair.

Lin: "Grandpa?"

I shook him. Then I realized he did not breathe anymore.

Sobbing a little bit, I raised up to go to the old west prison.

Lin: "Good bye, grandpa. I will change the past by any means"

I did still not know what my grandpa hid from me about that old uninhibited west prison but I could not give up now. I must move forward even if I was the last person in this dead world.

I hold my breath after locking the main gate of the old west prison.

I restrained to vomit because the smell of black blood which dripped from the wound on my arm.

Ignoring the attacking noise of the robots army from outside, I quickly run to the center of the prison where the machine located as Adrian's description.

Lin: "Hope that rusty door could endure their attacks enough time for me to start the orange"

Joy: "352"

After getting out the Hansol's old lab, I continuously heard Joy's voice from the every loudspeaker in the city.

She counted the left monsters in the world.

Of course, for me it was the number of left human in the world.

When I entered the center room of the west prison, I saw an unforgettable scene.

Appearing in front of my eyes was a breath-taking crystal object with 20-meter height which trapped a young man inside. It seemed like ice but I knew it was not ice. That man was floating in the top part of that object.

He was still alive and looked like a princess sleeping in an ice coffin.

At the bottom of the crystal, there was a glowing machine. There were the black sharp thorns around that machine.

Lin: "Hmn, what do we have here?"

I brushed off the steam on the brass plate to read the letters on it.

Lin: "Syd? What a familiar name? Vigil?"

Then I saw a keyhole with clover shape. The key to open it must have the same shape. I saw the key to release him. It was Joy's pendant.

Lin: "So you are that demon?"

I talked to him while I remembered what Joy told me before.

She told me she will use the key to release the demon when the time came to put the demon in pain.

Lin: "Grandpa, now I understand why you do not want me to go to this place. You really hated this guy"

Forcing his enemy to see how successful his plan could be was like his type of character.

Orange vendor: "The truth is that they were known as terrorists because they were defeated by the Paradise army in the last battle"

I still remembered what the orange vendor told about Vigil.

What a cruel crystal cage! The sharp thorns in the bottom of the crystal were to make sure that the only way to release him safely was using its key.

If somebody wanted to release Syd by breaking without the key, he will fall and be stabbed by those black thorns.

I did not have a key to open the ice to access the center machine.

Therefore, all I could do was... It was so terrible. My grandpa – Adrian trapped him and I sacrificed him to save the world?

Lin: "I am a murder"

After I finished my words, the crystal broke into pieces at the same time. I saw Syd's body was stabbed by thorns on the left side of the machine. Nothing could heal those fatal wounds. I could not stand to see dead body anymore so that I tried to ignore to access the machine.

Joy: "19"

I did not have so much time to waste.

I insert the data chip into the center machine.

<Connecting – Start to upload data>

Bang

Suddenly, the door of the center room was thrown open violently.

I turned my eyes to the entrance.

The some robots came with its leader – Joy.

Joy: "Monster, you released the demon?"

I still felt hurt when I heard directly the one I considered as my mother called me 'Monster'

Lin: "How stupid I am that I thought you was my mother. You are a destructor, all of you"

With her gleaming blue eyes, she ordered her squad.

Joy: "Kill the monster to protect human"

A robot run toward my place with his gun.

After breaking the crystal, I did not have any left strength to fight anymore except from waiting his gun blow up my head.

I closed my eyes.

But then the bullet missed my body and hit the right wall.

In my surprise, I saw Syd was fighting with that robot.

Lin: "How?"

He soaked in red blood. His body was bleeding from countless wound but he still fought.

Robots: "It is an alive human. Turn off the guns and start to fight by fists"

He cracked a robot head by his arms. How can a normal human fight in that status?

Syd: "Where can I hide my face if I was killed by a child? So stop crying, if I died right now, I was killed by a robot destructor while saving a child. It is cooler ~"

He smirked at me while stealing a gun and shot towards the robots.

Of course, all guns were turned off so he could not shoot too. Then he just hurled it at them as if it was a big rock.

Lin: "Pffft"

I burst in to laugh in tears when I heard his comforting joke. How long has it been since the last time I could laugh like that?

Lin: "Buy me some time"

Syd: "Yes, madam"

But there was something abnormal.

Lin: "You could hear me from that crystal?"

Syd: "Yes. And I could hear you too. 45 years passed, the destructor"

He stared at Joy.

Joy: "I told you stories each week about our happy paradise intentionally. Although it was a little bit sooner, did you change your mind after 45 years? Your body and your mind is a big success of Yujin so Adrian and I don't want let you die but choose to wait your acceptance. You could fight now in this status is a proof. If you accept to give us your mind, all of us will welcome you to our paradise"

Some robots were defeated. It was so incredible that a normal human could win robots. I did not know why but I felt his body was so abnormal at the first place.

No time to waste, I turned my head to do the next step with the center machine after be notified that all the data was inserted to it.

<Finished uploading data>

<Start to hack and absorb energy>

I could felt the hacking code was running because the center machine vibrated lightly.

Now I only needed to wait the orange absorbed enough energy to start. My heart was beating fast like a drum.

Syd: "What kind of paradise is it? I only know that you killed all people during 3 weeks. And now you tried to kill this child too"

Joy: "They are monsters"

Joy punched him so suddenly that he could not avoid. Because of the thrust, he was pushed to hit the center machine. The crash made me freeze in confusing surprise.

The machine was broken before it could start at the last minutes.

I kneeled down in desperation while Syd coughed out red blood.

All the data was gone with the broken machine. Now no one knew the medicine recipe.

Even if people in the past knew about the disaster and the time, how can they make a medicine without getting the composition of a future virus?

A genius like my grandpa - Adrian could only make the medicine depending on his experiments with the corpses which were affected by the virus.

Besides, nothing could supply the energy for the orange too.

Joy: "1"

She counted. There was only one monster left in this world.

Lin: "Agh"

I cried again. I thought that I could not cry anymore but no. I really thought that I could succeed. I went a long way to this step. I was almost there. Many sacrifices occurred to give me a chance: Orange vendor, my grandpa, Syd and myself.

Syd stood up again, he still fought against Joy.

I looked at them with my tearing eyes.

His bleeding wounds got worse and worse but he did not give up. How could he try so hard?

My chest pained.

Lin: "Stop. It is enough. There is nothing we could do now. Just let her kill me. I'd rather die than live in a dead world like this"

Syd: "Stop what? You are the one needing to stop"

Lin: "I stopped already. Didn't you see that I gave up? I wanted to change the past, I wanted to save the world but I could do nothing now. There is no data and no energy of 1 million factories. Hah, at least I could die with everyone in this dead world"

Syd: "I said you stop sitting there and waiting to die. Hold yourselves!"

I was suddenly angry with him. Oh, I really lost my mind. I started to yell at the one who helped me before.

Lin: "What can I do now? I failed. I could not think anything. I could not do anything. Don't forget that I want to kill you some minutes ago. You should hate me"

Syd: "I don't hate you or anyone else. And I don't know anything too but I know that all these things are not meaningless. There must be a chance or something like that because..."

Joy still punched him and he tried to avoid. It looked like if he was a little careless, she would blow up his head at that time. Joy was the strongest in the world anyway.

Syd: "... I am still alive and you are still alive. Even you wanted to kill me for a machine but you don't know how happy I felt when I saw a living human after trapping 45 years. So please, don't give up"

I was surprised at his words.

Lin: "Yes, you are still alive but you are soaked in..."

Red blood?

As if a bomb exploded in my head, I realized an incredible thing. How could his blood still be red color? And Joy did not count him as a monster too. All people in the world affected by the virus but Syd could escape from it.

Suddenly I picked up a broken piece of the crystal. Could this thing prevent the virus from attacking him?

Lin: "Hey, was it Adrian who made this crystal to trap you?"

I asked him to make sure what I guessed.

Syd: "Yes, he made it long time ago"

This crystal could save human from this kind of virus as it could save Syd.

But the thing was how to persuade Adrian in the past to use the crystal to block the virus rain and the energy for the orange too. There were too much things stuck together.

I needed to find a way to escape.

I murmured to myself.

Lin: "Energy. Energy. Energy. Energy. Energy..."

Syd: "Hey, calm down"

Lin: "What?"

Syd: "Think about it carefully. Why did you think that this crystal machine could supply enough energy for you at the first place?"

Lin: "That was not me but my grandfather – Adrian. The place I thought to use energy at the first place was the center factory because it stored energy for the country. It was destroyed so grandpa told me to come to this place"

Syd: "Then why did he think that this crystal machine could replace the center factory machine? Imagine as you was him, child"

Lin: "What? Was it because he thought that this crystal machine stored energy to make sure you will alive until the next century even though human went extinct?"

Syd: "Then excepting from the crystal machine, what will exist until the next century? That thing could supply enough energy for you"

Lin: "..."

I quickly realized a hard answer, but I still did not have enough strength to move so far, my legs froze as hard as rocks.

Orange vendor: "You're a genius, Lin. I believed that in the most critical situation, you could make a right decision even it is a painful decision"

A painful decision huh? I must admit that I was not a good person.

I bowed my head because I was afraid of seeing Syd's face.

Lin: "Please break Joy's gun but try not to harm her"

Syd: "What? Her gun was turned off and-"

I cut off his words.

Of course when Joy fought against Syd, she turned off her gun due to robot's security system. However, when she fought against me – a monster, she will shot me by her gun.

Lin: "Please, it is the only way I know so far... You are right, I am afraid of dying with this dead world, it is so terrible..."

My words and my thoughts became confused because I did not know what to talk.
