Chapter Twenty-One
Chapter Twenty-One
Jessica looks out the door of her house before stepping out into the outside world. Ever since Taeyeon has fallen sick, something seemed off. She’s becoming very paranoid. It felt as if someone or something was always following her. She even believes that someone had rummaged through her room as some items are missing and her laptop was on when she returned that evening.
She begins walking down the street to the bus stop when she jumps and looks over her shoulder. “Okay now I’m past the stage of being paranoid,” she whispers to herself as she finds nothing behind her. She continues on her way to the bus stop finding Yuri, Hyoyeon, Sooyoung and Yoona leaning against the wall.
“Going to work?” asks Jessica. They all look at her and Hyoyeon scoffs.
“So Jessica…Taeng told us that you’re father died in a stand-off,” states Yuri while walking to her side and draping her arm across Jessica.
“Yeah, that’s correct,” states Jessica while pushing Yuri’s arm off of her.
“Really?” questions Yoona while approaching Jessica’s other side, “because little Krystal says otherwise. In fact she said something about your parents divorcing when you guys were little and he lives somewhere in town. Says you guys visit him during the holiday and the weekends when you’re not busy with work.”
“Krystal is lying,” states Jessica while walking away from them only to have Sooyoung block her way. “I don’t think Taeyeon would be happy to find out that you’re harassing me.”
“Midget thinks you’re hiding something,” adds Sooyoung as she, Yoona and Yuri tower over Jessica. Jessica backs away from the taller but younger girls running into the wall.
Jessica closes her eyes before swinging a fist and knocking Sooyoung over. Opening her eyes and finding an opening, she makes a run for it away from the group. Hyoyeon groans and begins pursuit after the older girl as Yuri, Yoona and Sooyoung join. Jessica looks over her shoulder at the four girls that were chasing her, fear evident in her face. Not once had she figure that somewhere down the line of her life would she be running from the mafia. Even more so her girlfriend’s mafia.
She turns a corner spotting her house within reach. If she can make it to her house and slip inside she’d be fine. She looks over her shoulder again to see Hyoyeon closing the distance between them. She closes her eyes and pumps her legs as hard as she could. Feeling a hand on her shoulder she turns around and sends a fist flying straight at Hyoyeon’s face.
Hyoyeon dodges the fist, grabs hold of Jessica’s arm and twists it behind Jessica’s back. “We’re in public,” states Jessica while hissing from the pain, “Don’t make me scream!”
“Look…I just want to know whatever it is you’re hiding. You are dating my sister. If you’re doing something that will put her in danger-”
“And you think chasing me and hurting me is going to make me talk?” Hyoyeon releases her; Jessica turns and glares at Hyoyeon while rubbing her arm.
“Look I don’t like talking about my dad, alright. It’s why I said he died in a standoff. He sort of did. He’s obsessed with his job now, which led to my parents’ divorce.”
“Is he a cop?”
“I have work. And I’m telling Taeyeon what you did.” Jessica pushes past them and walks back to the bus stop.
“Are we going to chase her again?”
“Let her be. Taeyeon’s going to be mad.”
*****
“Taeyeon,” Taeyeon looks up from cleaning the counter of ice cream to see Jessica looking at her.
“Yes Jessica,” answers Taeyeon.
“I think we need to t-“
“You’re breaking up with me?!” panics Taeyeon eyes becoming wide as her grip on the towel tightens. Jessica watches as her good hand furiously wipe the counter.
“Why are you jumping to conclusions?” hisses Jessica.
“Well usually when someone tells their girlfriend or boyfriend that they need to talk it means that they’re breaking up, right?” Jessica nods her head, “and you said we need to talk that must mean breaking up with me.” Jessica mentally face palms herself. Why oh why did she fall for this dimwit?
“It’s about your family,” states Jessica in a low whisper while eyeing the shoppers.
“Oh! Okay…after work,” she scoops some ice cream on a free sample spoon and hands it to Jessica. “We can talk after work.” Jessica takes the spoon popping it in her mouth. She waves goodbye to Taeyeon before walking away. Taeyeon groans and pulls her phone out of her pocket dialing a number. “Hyo?”
“Tae…”
“What did you do to Jessica?” asks Taeyeon while preparing for her break.
“Nothing. I just talked to her.”
“You’re going to ruin my relationship. Let things be.”
“She’s the mole.”
“She’s not the mole. We figured out there isn’t a mole.”
“Tae…”
“ I like her.”
“She’s using you.”
“No she isn’t.”
“Her dad is a cop.”
“Our dad is a Mob Boss.”
“She’s seducing you.”
“She’s making me good.”
“You’ve always been good. I did the dirty work.”
“Yeah and now you’re my sister. Not my servant.”
“Tae.”
“Hyo.”
“If her dad destroys what your father worked so hard to do?”
“Then I take over and make the business good. I do some good. We get to be normal.”
“We are far from normal. We are the daughters of a crime syndicate.”
“Hyo…just leave Jessica alone. I will handle things.” She hangs up the phone and releases a sigh of defeat.
*****
“What did you want to talk about?” asks Taeyeon while holding Jessica’s hand as they walk through the empty streets.
“I think my dad is trying to over throw your family’s business,” answers Jessica honestly.
“I know,” answers Taeyeon. Jessica gives Taeyeon a curious look. “My jackets. You have my jackets. You visit your dad on weekends with Krystal. He looks in the pockets for information that I give him.” Jessica stops walking. “I do it, because a small part of the reason is I like you. I know you’re not supposed to choose a girl who you barely date over your family. And believe me I’m not. I just don’t like the business. It’s not the life I want. And like any other mafia, once you’re in there is no way out. So I became the mole to topple over the business. Yuri’s the only other person who knows.”
“And here I thought my father wiretaps me,” whispers Jessica.
“Do you want to break up with me now?” asks Taeyeon.
“And let those other girls have you?” questions Jessica. A grin spreads across Taeyeon’s face as she leans over and places a kiss on Jessica’s cheek.
“You like me,” she whispers while grinning like an idiot.
“I’m hungry. Let go eat, and you’re paying,” responds Jessica changing the subject as she begins walking again dragging Taeyeon along with her.
*****
“Jessica called me earlier and said that you guys attacked her,” states Tiffany while looking at her homework assignments.
“I didn’t hurt her,” responds Yuri. Tiffany looks up at Yuri, “Hyoyeon kind of got out of hand. And believe me, Taeng is going to deal with it. It wasn’t supposed to happen like that. We were only going to question her about her father and his ties to Taeng’s family.”
“Mr. Jung is a workaholic. He’s really obsessed with trying to close his case that deals with Taeyeon’s family. It’s why Jessica’s mother divorced him. Jessica wasn’t exactly happy about it and she shows her foul mood by saying that he died,” states Tiffany. “Does Taeyeon’s family have a hit out on Jessica?” Yuri breaks out into a laugh. “What? I’m being serious.”
“A hit? Wow…you’ve watched to many movies,” laughs Yuri. Tiffany pouts causing for Yuri to quiet down. “I mean no. Taeyeon’s family doesn’t exactly do hits on people. In fact I can’t even remember the last time Mr. Kim had a person killed.”
“What kind of Mafia is that?”
“A strange one I’ll admit. The most Mr. Kim does is illegal overseas stuff. Mr. Kim is a business man and runs his group as so. He doesn’t use fear…he uses intelligence.” Tiffany nods her head sort of understanding what Yuri was saying.
“So Jessi is fine?”
“Everyone is fine. As I said Taeng’s working on it.”
“Well how do you do this one?” asks Tiffany turning the subject to their homework assignment. Yuri stands up and walks around to stand behind Tiffany so she can see the problem better. Leaning over the older girl’s shoulder she tries working the problem out in her head when she feels a pair of lips press against her cheek. “So how do you do it?” asks Tiffany while flashing the younger girl a smile.
*****
Taeyeon watches as Jessica shivers before beginning to pull off her own jacket. “Keep your jacket,” states Jessica, “last time you got sick. And I’m not transferring any more insider information.”
“Ah come on,” responds Taeyeon.
“No. End of discussion.”
“It wasn’t even a discussion,” mumbles Taeyeon. Jessica rolls her eyes. Taeyeon sticks her hand inside her jacket sleeves.
“I said keep your jacket.” Taeyeon slides the article of clothing all the way off and hands Jessica the jacket while showing her the flash drive that was in her hand.
“See I’m wearing long sleeves. I have the flash drive so you put on the jacket,” states Taeyeon sternly. Jessica gives in and slides on the jacket. “There…but you’re going to have to stop collecting my jackets. I’m running out. And having to take you out every night with a small paycheck leaves me with a little amount of money.”
“You’re rich.”
“Correction. My father is rich. My trust fund is on hold. I can’t even use it to repair my car.”
“That you purposefully wrecked.”
“I’m never going to win in an argument against you, am I?” questions Taeyeon. Jessica smiles before grabbing Taeyeon’s arm seeking even more warmth. “Even more so you’re going to make me poor aren’t you?” Jessica’s smile grows. Taeyeon fakes a groan only to receive a fist to the shoulder, “ow.”
“That’s what you get,” mutters Jessica. They continue walking in a comfortable silence around Jessica’s neighborhood. “Taeyeon,” whispers Jessica breaking the silence.
“Hm?”
“Stop being a mole and just wait til it’s your turn to lead the business.”
“Why?” questions Taeyeon. She was confused as to why Jessica would say something.
“Because if you take over now. Then that means you will be working all day at home. And then work at the mall would be boring and uneventful.”
“Work at the mall boring and uneven-“ Taeyeon’s eyes widen, “So you did like it when I flirted!”
“You called that flirting?” responds Jessica in disbelief.
“Yeah. What did you think I was doing?”
“Being a perv,” answers Jessica, “but just wait okay.”
“You like my flirting. You like spending time with me. You get worried when I’m not around for a long time. You get jealous when I speak to other people. And all that means that you like me.” Taeyeon grins triumphantly, “Ha Jessica Jung likes me!” shouts Taeyeon.
Jessica begins walking dragging Taeyeon with her. “Let’s just get me home before people make you out to be crazy.”
